Has anyone used glycerine suppositories?

I am so constipated. I've tried more fibre, more water, lactulose and go a little bit but no more. I've no gut problems other than slow transit time. If you've used glycerine suppositories did they work and do they burn? I don't like the sound of a burning bum!!!

@allthebeautifulflowers have you had a hot bath?
Get someone to rub your lower back in anticlockwise direction
You can use laxido longer term - my son is a witholder and I know allll about laxido 🤦

allthebeautifulflowers · 27/07/2023 16:40

I usually take Laxido twice a day, but suddenly it's stopped working.

The suppositories helped me pass watery stuff at first but then nothing. I think I'm impacted further up the bowel.

I'm hardly sleeping since it started so (as I also have long covid) I'm too tired to move, but I'll see if I can manage a bath later, thank you.

Jellycats4life · 27/07/2023 16:51

A max of three days for Laxido isn’t correct at all. Is that written on the box or on the sticker from the pharmacy? You can absolutely take it daily for an indefinite period. I would in your shoes! Anything to achieve some sort of regular bowel habit 🤞

allthebeautifulflowers · 27/07/2023 18:47

I take it twice a day as a regular prescription. It's the eight sachets a day that's the issue - it's not working so far and the instructions say it's not normal to exceed three days of this.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 27/07/2023 18:53

You can do a disimpaction regime. Id definitely increase the dosage and try and unblock. I agree you are impacted. Increasing the dosage won't do any harm or for the length of time either. But you just also drink extra fluid

I’m with you. Well in that case, if three days of 8 sachets per day does nothing, then you need to seek urgent medical advice to rule out an obstruction.

Thanks for your replies!

Can anyone tell me what to expect from disimpacting with Laxido? Clearly a dramatic emptying would be very cathartic and welcome! So far it's lots of liquid and tiny bits of solids, so will this be a very gradual process?

I've just remembered that milk of magnesia might help, so I'm getting some today.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 28/07/2023 10:42

Yes because really wet/watery stool can bypass a blockage. I think the term is "rusty tea" watery type poo and you will have cleared it. Obviously with no signs of old poo which will be very dark.

Get the Kiwi fruits down you. I swear by them with my witholder.

allthebeautifulflowers · 28/07/2023 22:39

I've passed nothing dark and still feel full. This is endless.

Kiwis don't usually affect me either way but can't hurt, will try

mfhtoeh · 29/07/2023 04:11

Wow this thread is busier than I expected. So much constipation. I feel for you all, I really do.

I’m in hospital and at the stage if I don’t poop soon I’ll be having bowel surgery.

I have an obstruction in my transverse colon & am so packed with poop the X-rays were pretty shocking.

I’ve tried macrogol, senna, bisocodyl, lactulose, linaclotide, prucalopride, enemas and suppositories. Had 3 weeks of those.

Today I had a ‘bowel prep’ (moviprep) and it’s not worked. It’s supposed to be ‘dynamite’ and the strongest they’ve got. Trying it again tomorrow 6am. Then again at 1pm. Then seeing dr.

Other health issues compounding problems.

Never take having a poo for granted!

Bananas with brown sugar work for me. Other than that a good curry, the hotter the better.

Strange because bananas are constipating!

Runaround50 · 29/07/2023 10:46

@mfhtoeh poor you, sounds dreadful. How are you today? Any joy? 🌺

mfhtoeh · 29/07/2023 10:54

Thanks for asking. No success yet.

I’m Having another round of moviprep today.

Really doing absolutely everything to avoid surgery.

Nurse speechless moviprep didn’t work.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 29/07/2023 10:58

Poor you @mfhtoeh . I agree, if people haven't experienced it they dont know the pain and knock on effects

Runaround50 · 29/07/2023 11:10

Any clue what's caused the obstruction to begin with? Rooting for your bowel to do something quickly!

Runaround50 · 29/07/2023 11:15

@mfhtoeh sorry just saw your other message re the ehlers syndrome.... is this contributing to this constipation?

Sugarplumfury · 29/07/2023 12:01

mfhtoeh. Goodness me you are really going through it you poor thing . Crossing everything for you that the next round of moviprep works

I've got slow transit and what works for me is satsumas (eating them) 4 a day.

Not shoving them up your bum?!!!! GrinGrin

Runaround50 · 30/07/2023 09:58

@mfhtoeh how are things going?

allthebeautifulflowers · 02/08/2023 21:55

@mfhtoeh Also wondering how you are?

I'm at a loss by now. If I take the mega doses of Laxido, I pass what I'm sure is just bypass diarrhea and new food goes through undigested.

If I just take my usual laxatives dose (as a new doctor suggested trying) I still bloat like a beach ball and can't face food.

I've had a mystery pain in the area (ascending to transverse colon) for almost five years. I feel almost sure this is an escalation of that problem.

As I don't have a complete obstruction, doctors aren't interested, but I'm miserable and quite worried. Is a barium xray worth requesting? What else can I do? It's been two weeks of hardly eating and I'm exhausted.

Runaround50 · 02/08/2023 22:23

@allthebeautifulflowers oh crikey, this isn't good. Could you present at a&e and say you are in great pain and need help to clear your system urgently? How long has it been now since you cleared your bowel?

You will become ill soon.

mfhtoeh · 02/08/2023 22:30

Runaround50 · 30/07/2023 09:58

@mfhtoeh how are things going?

Pretty rubbish. Saw the gastro team again today. Still have a partial obstruction & profound explosive overflow diarrhoea.

Need antiemetics to keep food in. Then if I’m lucky it’ll stay in til I eat, whereupon a reflex sets upon expelling it out at the force of rocket fuel.

Colonoscopy on Friday if things persist.

Thyroid settling though!

Enjoy your poops guys - don’t take it for granted

Nag the GP for a gastro referral. if desperate go private. I would take a punt at £250 for a consultation (don’t actually know) but sometimes it’s just worth saying sod it and paying.

If you’re Southampton way Dr Coleman (NHS - not sure if private) is your man. Sadly it’s not the hospital I’m in at the moment but I need to be here for the thyroid issues otherwise I’d be over there like a shot! The team there is phenomenal.

mfhtoeh · 02/08/2023 22:38

Btw there are lots more options than Laxido. The gp should be helping you to get a regimen that works.

have you tried the daily routine thing? Every morning, 15 mins sit on the loo and just imagine you need to poop and will have one. Your gut LOVES routine. Give it time and honestly routine was the best medicine for me for years.

My issues are more systemic at the moment but once resolved the routine thing is essential to happy tummy.

Also going to put out there - try symprove. Expensive but proven medically to get good bacteria to the gut. Recommended by NHS consultants. A world away from yakukt.
