Has anyone used glycerine suppositories?

I am so constipated. I've tried more fibre, more water, lactulose and go a little bit but no more. I've no gut problems other than slow transit time. If you've used glycerine suppositories did they work and do they burn? I don't like the sound of a burning bum!!!

Sugar free sweets are amazing. Aldi sell a few different ones, have a packet during the evening then sit back and wait.

Beargrumps22 · 21/07/2023 17:29

they can work but don't leave it I ended up in the hospital a few times due to severe constipation. that resulted in an enema which was no fun. when you have it done you automatically want to expel the liquid and have to lie with your bowels clenched until it works. what I hated was having to poo in a bedpan on a commode in a packed ward at 11 at night! embarrassed was not the word.
for me coca cola always makes me pooh don't ask me why or strong coffee maybe because I don't drink it often
as an aside I am in favor of suppositories they tend to use medicines in this way in many countries including France. A long time ago I had severe migraine and it was so bad I could not keep painkillers down so as I was in the aforementioned place they can me painkillers in suppository form. it was fantastic no nasty side effects like the constipation co - codomal causes; I wish the UK used them more as normal drugs just cause problems like constipation

Thanks BearGrumps how miserable and embarrassing your hospital experience sounds. I will definitely not leave it like this. I’ll try movicol and if no improvement in a week, will contact my GP. I’ve always had constipation but not this stubborn .

They didn’t work for me.
Laxido is good , as is Movicol.

SabbatWheel · 21/07/2023 18:21

And good old Senokot will give you a good blow-out. Surprisingly, my last colonoscopy clearout started with senokot which saved having to drink pints of the liquid laxative.

MrsPositivity1 · 21/07/2023 21:40

I usually take fresh pineapple (you can buy tubs of this on Lidl) and it definitely works for me

anywherebutthere · 21/07/2023 21:46

My son was prescribed sodium picosulphate. You can get it over the counter. It is honestly lethal, within 6 hours he had explosive poo after a week of not going!

anywherebutthere · 21/07/2023 21:49

In fact, I think he took movicol at the same time. One softens the stool and the other pushes them out.

TheInterceptor · 21/07/2023 22:09

Milk of magnesia. After 30 years of IBS, it's a godsend. It tastes like minty fish, but by God it works - sometimes within minutes.

wyntersuhn · 21/07/2023 22:50

I hav ongoing issues with constipation and I've found eating chia seeds everyday has really helped. I soak a couple of tablespoons of seeds in juice or water overnight in the fridge, then eat a heaped tablespoon everyday with my muesli. Game changer for me.

Sonolanona · 21/07/2023 23:38

Attack from both ends... a LOT of laxido (I think from memory 16 sachets is the impaction dose ..tho I'd probably start with 2) and the glycerine from the other end when the blockage starts to break down.
I have to use a suppository daily (prescribed) as after having my children I was left with multiple prolapses and zero ability to poo. Laxido keeps it moving and glycerine helps it out!

Sugarplumfury · 22/07/2023 00:24

Wow so many possible ways of getting rid of the beast I’m harbouring. Thank you all for the advice. I will get some laxido/movicol and try it next, in conjunction with the glycerine. Sorry you’ve all got experience of this. It never usually bothers me but I’m feeling seriously bunged up this time. I think I have a pack of chia seeds somewhere. Move had 4 satsumas. I think surely there has to be some imminent consequences 😳

You use them blunt end 1st as if you insert them pointy end they can slip out.

Gosh, you learn something new every day !!

lilyflower1803 · 22/07/2023 10:26

I recommend laxido! I used it during pregnancy and was the ONLY thing that worked, without many nasty side effects either.

CornedBeef451 · 23/07/2023 09:31

@Sugarplumfury any progress?

Might be disturbing but I thought if you this morning while I was on the loo and wondered how you were getting on!

HonoriaLucastaDelagardie · 23/07/2023 13:13

Sugar free sweets are amazing. Aldi sell a few different ones, have a packet during the evening then sit back and wait.

Sorbitol is the ingredient to watch out for. Don't eat anything with it in if you can't be sure of getting to the loo pretty swiftly. Even a couple of mints will do it if you eat them too quickly

You do not do blunt end first. They're rounded to ease insertion.

I'm a nurse you do insert blunt end 1st

I'm also a nurse...it should be rounded end first. However SOME people find it easier blunt end.

You can find evidence on Google for both sides of any argument.

Cornedbeef. That’s so sweet. No result as yet. I bought a big box of movicol sachets and took 2 yesterday and 2 so far today plus glycerine suppository this morning . Eaten all satsuma supply and drinking lots of water. Dear Lord, this is taking some shifting!!! Hanks for all the advice and suppository info. I’m ok using them apart from opening the packaging.

Also try an Epsom salt bath.

vjg13 · 24/07/2023 19:37

I was also told to use blunt end first of a suppository by a paediatric nurse when my daughter was young and wouldn't tolerate oral pain killers (she has LD).

I suppose they have different ends so people can choose which they prefer!
