Has anyone used glycerine suppositories?

I am so constipated. I've tried more fibre, more water, lactulose and go a little bit but no more. I've no gut problems other than slow transit time. If you've used glycerine suppositories did they work and do they burn? I don't like the sound of a burning bum!!!

Any movement @Sugarplumfury ?

Sugarplumfury · 24/07/2023 22:35

Cornedbeef. Nooooo !! Thanks for asking again. Todays attempt involved a walk for an hour, a hot bath, 1 glycerine suppository after the bath, then heated pad and a movicol sachet after each meal. I can’t take more movicol daily as Ive felt nauseous after 3. Will keep going till next week and send online appointment request to GP about it, if there’s no progress. I can feel the beast in there but can’t shift it.

Oh no, I feel your pain!

Good luck with it, constipation really is surprisingly horrendous!

fiftyandfat · 24/07/2023 22:49

You need 2 suppositories. One is no use.
Insert as far as possible and retain for 20 minutes if you can.

GrowThroughWhatYouGoThrough · 24/07/2023 23:04

I swear by dulcolax liquid you can buy it over the counter. It's the one I dread taking (constipation suffer) as it gives me stomach ache but it's worth it in the end 🤣 Hope you manage to go soon!

lisalisa · 24/07/2023 23:15

I used Kleen enema on myself a few days ago when I got stuck . What was bad for me was that my stomach and bowels were cramping and spasoming terribly to try to expel the poo but nothing would shift . The spasms in the end made me shaky and dizzy but the enema sorted it out in 5 or so minutes

Sugarplumfury · 24/07/2023 23:25

lisalisa. My friend who I went for a walk with today was telling me about the result she got with the enema she had to use before her sigmoidoscopy. She said it worked in 5 minutes. She has IBS and can get really stubborn constipation. She didn’t know what it was but I was googling enemas when I got home and saw the Kleen one. Where did you get it from?

fiftyandfat. I’ve been using two of the glycerine suppositories .

Thanks again everyone for the advice and recommendations. Something surely must do something soon

fiftyandfat · 24/07/2023 23:28

Oh sorry. I misunderstood. I thought you only used one at a time.

lisalisa · 24/07/2023 23:31

Sugarplumfairy I got it from a normal high st chemist . It isn’t pleasant at all and I was shocked and a bit tearful at the smell and mess before I could safely get up and run like mad to the loo . But the relief was incredible .

mfhtoeh · 24/07/2023 23:48

I’ve got chronic constipation due to Ehlers Danlos Syndrome.

There is some great advice and product names - Laxido a perfect place to start.

A weird tip but if you want to guage how slow your gut is, have a meal with sesame seeds, sweetcorn or quinoa as a one-off once day. Keep a look out at your poop for the next few days/weeks and you’ll get some idea of the timings of your gut.

The most important thing I learnt was that gut LOVES routine. Set yourself up a 15 minute time to sit on the toilet after, say, breakfast at home. Just sit there for 15 mins chilling out as if you want to poop - don’t strain or gouge out. Maybe use a little stool to higher your knees. Then just keep doing it. Your body will soon connect that safe space and time to poop time. It’s based on scientific studies and was brought to me by the gastro team in Southampton University Hospital. it has helped immersely.

Having said that I’ve got a flare up of a bowel obstruction which was caused by illness and I’m in hospital shitting out Molton lava which I’m unsure beats 2 weeks shitting nothing.

Some middle ground would be nice!

Sugarplumfury · 25/07/2023 00:05

Oh right well im going to try buy an enema. I just assumed it would be a prescription only thing.

mfhtoeh. I have cEDS and remember years and years ago having a colonoscopy which showed a very very long, loopy set of intestines which they said would make transit time very slow. I’ve always had problems since as far back as I can remember, but not quite this immovable ! I did the eating corn transit time test and it took nearly a week to appear! I don’t think my gut does routine. There is never any pattern to when I need the loo. Could be literally any time of day and on average once or twice a week. This must be coming up 3 weeks now. Normally I don’t have any discomfort but I’m feeling bunged up this time. I like the idea of trying to get a routine established though . Will give it a go . I don’t think sitting on the loo for 15 mins would be a good idea as sitting on the hard seat would really hurt my back.

So sorry you’re in hospital mfhtoeh. That sounds thoroughly miserable. I hope you are soon unblocked and back home .

Years ago I was recommended to buy something called Monastery Herbs from the health food shop. You sprinkled them on your food abd they worked a treat. Not sure if they are still available.

Sugarplumfury · 25/07/2023 09:34

Thanks Sandown. They sound very interesting. I’ll Google them and try find out what they are.

@Sugarplumfury ? Any joy ?
I've got a similar issue and I'm kid happy at all 🙁

Dulcolax for me tonight and I hate it!

Sugarplumfury · 26/07/2023 19:55

Runaround50. Yes thanks. Yesterday, after 3 sachets of movicol, a stool softener, lots of fluids, and in desperation a Micromax mini enema I finally went properly!!!! I hope you have luck with the Dulcolax . Good luck. And mfhtoeh I hope you are starting to feel better and will be able to go home very soon

I had to go to a farmers store and buy a lamb feeder kit to use as an enema pump when I took codeine based painkillers.

Even half a kilo of dried apricots wouldn't shift it.

I had surgery last September and started back on the apricots as soon as I had a swallow reflex and this time I was shitting like a dream from day two. : )

Runaround50 · 26/07/2023 20:26

@Sugarplumfury so so glad you are sorted, what a relief!! You must feel great.

I'm losing the will to live ☹️
There's a 'bit' which won't shift.
It's like my muscles won't work.
Very worried now.

Runaround50 · 26/07/2023 20:47

@ErniesGhostlyGoldTops i don't blame you re the apricots. Being bunged up, is well, shit!!!

CornedBeef451 · 26/07/2023 20:58

@Sugarplumfury congratulations! Glad something finally worked.

Sugarplumfury · 26/07/2023 23:03

Thanks everyone. It’s like one of those labour threads but with not quite as miraculous an end. Though after all this, it was getting close to a miracle . It is definitely a relief. I was amazed to be able to buy a box of mini enemas in the chemist without even a question apart from if they were for me. I thought I’d be quizzed as to other medication and advised to see my GP etc. Runaround. Good luck on your mission. I think the combination of the 3 sachets of movicol for a few days plus the micromax enema really helped if you aren’t getting anywhere.

allthebeautifulflowers · 27/07/2023 15:06

Adding to this thread as I'm in a similar situation (inc having hEDS). Ten days of severe constipation and low appetite despite using Laxido, senna, and glyercine suppositories. I'm on day two of eight Laxidos a day with nothing happening. From the pain, there may be a blockage on my upper right side.

A fairly bored GP said to call back if maximum Laxido doesn't work. What will happen then? This is pretty miserable.

@mfhtoeh, can you offer any advice?

Jellycats4life · 27/07/2023 15:36

Keep up with the Laxido @allthebeautifulflowers

If you’re very blocked up then the meds have a lot of backed up stool to work through. I find it can sometimes take time to start working, but it will. If it doesn’t, then you’ll have to seek medical advice re. a possible obstruction, but tbh if you had a bowel obstruction I think you’d been feeling very ill.

allthebeautifulflowers · 27/07/2023 15:54

Thank you @Jellycats4life. It's certainly taking its time! I'll try to have faith that it will work eventually. I've no idea why this has happened. I'm not feeling great and my back, legs and bladder hurt intermittently,
but I guess that's just internal pressure.

The Laxido instructions suggest a max of three days so I guess my concern is how long is safe to keep going. (Calling the GP back is far less easy at this surgery than he thinks).

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 27/07/2023 15:57

Kiwi fruit is the key

Also suppositories are so good in surprised you got no relief from them.

I had it so bad once I had to pick extremely hard balls of poop out of my bum (did it in the shower) and then used a suppository after that.
Not fun but did the job
