Has anyone used glycerine suppositories?

I am so constipated. I've tried more fibre, more water, lactulose and go a little bit but no more. I've no gut problems other than slow transit time. If you've used glycerine suppositories did they work and do they burn? I don't like the sound of a burning bum!!!

Glycerine suppositories only work on faeces in the rectum. It will lubricate and make hard stool easier to pass. So if that's your problem they will work. If not you probably will be better seeking advice from GP for more or different oral laxatives to help move everything through.

LetItGoHome · 20/07/2023 10:32

And no, they don't burn. You pop them up with a little water based lubricant, blunt end on first.

caramac04 · 20/07/2023 10:35

After pelvic floor repair I used these on gp advice. Such a relief I cannot tell you but it was very unpleasant. Not the suppository but you know…..
They were definitely the best thing for me. Lactulose, loads of water and fruit juice hadn’t worked.

Sugarplumfury · 20/07/2023 10:46

Thanks so much. I feel so bunged up. I think it was reading about burning that was making me scared to give them a go. I'm going to try them. Glad they helped you both.

Yes really help.

I wet the end a bit first or use Vaseline if it's really uncomfortable

WarriorN · 20/07/2023 21:17

Gp prescribed me some weird stuff that looked like chocolate hundred and thousands once that really helped - but really I had a slightly too under active thyroid and had to have my dose of thyroxine altered. Might be worth ruling it out.

Borntobeamum · 20/07/2023 21:43

See if you can get hold of Laxido.
it helps me.

Jellycats4life · 20/07/2023 21:46

I agree with Laxido. It’s a stool softener and much more effective than Lactulose - which is OK for v mild constipation only.

Suppositories work if the blockage is right at the bottom end, but if you’re looking for a full clear out I’d spent a few days taking big doses of Laxido. Just don’t leave the house while you’re doing it.

LividHot · 20/07/2023 21:47

My toddler didn’t poo for THIRTEEN DAYS.

That included three goes with suppositories. Nothing happened.

It was Movicol that got him going. I think you can buy adult Movicol without a prescription.

Jellycats4life · 20/07/2023 21:51

Movicol and Laxido are the same product. They are one of the best treatments imo.

ArianaGrande · 21/07/2023 06:53

My dd (teenager) has struggled with constipation and used Laxido/Movicol a lot.

However,it was the glycerine suppositories that really worked for her. No burning.

Jujubes5 · 21/07/2023 07:38

Surely you don't use suppositories blunt end first !
Pointy end first , moisten them to make them slippy.
Glycerine is a very mild substance so use 2 or more if you need them - they make poo slippy imv and using them can give you the urge to go a little bit.
Just pick them up at the chemist.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 21/07/2023 08:26

Of course you don't use them blunt end first! Yes they work and no they don't burn. Get some Movicol/Laxido while you're out too as others have suggested.

CornedBeef451 · 21/07/2023 08:43

I used them after having DS as I had impacted poo and all the laxatives were just giving me diarrhoea that leaked around the impacted chunk.

They worked amazingly well, I think they just lubricate anything that's stuck but wouldn't work on anything above finger depth of your anus.

I was absolutely delighted when I finally passed a spherical turd which was bigger than my fist!

I think I was happier about that than the arrival of DS as I had been feeling so sick and was obsessed with the 14 poos stuck inside me!

Good luck, constipation is horrendous.

Igmum · 21/07/2023 08:51

Yes they work brilliantly (stay near your bathroom 😁).

If it's frequent I recommend porridge a few times a week and squats. Also going for walks.

Northernsoullover · 21/07/2023 08:53

I've got slow transit and what works for me is satsumas (eating them) 4 a day.

Sugarplumfury · 21/07/2023 10:58

Thanks for the advice everyone. I ended up using 2 yesterday and barely any results. I feel like what needs moving is higher up. I’m going to get some Movicol next. The glycerin were fine to use. No burning. But not much of a result either. I happened to buy 2 packs of big satsumas Northernsoulover so will start working my way through them.

CornedBeef. It’s like you had an actual baby then had to give birth to a poo 😳 . I’ve always had problems but this is next level.

CornedBeef451 · 21/07/2023 11:09

@Sugarplumfury it was the painkillers an immobility after a c section that did it.

Normally prunes are dangerously effective for me, as well as Victoria plums but I don't think they'll be in the shops for a few weeks yet.

Liquorice works for my sister and she swears by movicol for anything the liquorice doesn't work on.

Sugarplumfury · 21/07/2023 15:00

Cornedbeef it’s painkillers here that are big contributor. I take co-codamol for bad arthritis. I’ve not had any success with prunes. I once ate an entire bowl of the little sods, with zero action afterwards!!! Coffee often works, but this is a particularly stubborn escalation.

OP posts:
CornedBeef451 · 21/07/2023 17:00

If it's defeated the prunes then you definitely need to escalate!

Sugarplumfury · 21/07/2023 17:03

Cornedbeef yep. I'm way beyond prune level right now

Order sugar free gummy bears, just read the reviews on Amazon to see how well they work.

Sugarplumfury · 21/07/2023 17:15

Tasteslikesyrawberries. Thanks, I'll take a look.

You use them blunt end 1st as if you insert them pointy end they can slip out.
