Avon skin so soft body oil - I've heard this repels mosquitos?

Just wondering if anyone knows if this is true?

I've read it several places and if it is I'm going to buy some 😁

I've heard that the US Marines use it to repel insects and mosquitoes. I don't have a source, but it definitely works on people I know. Get the original not the pink one.

bellac11 · 12/07/2023 08:33

Ive heard this as well but it really dries out my skin, not sure why

Eyesopenwideawake · 12/07/2023 08:35

It used to, many years ago, but they changed the formula so it's no longer effective however many people still swear by it so it appears the placebo effect works!

unfor · 12/07/2023 08:37

Don't bother, I tried it and got loads of bites.

DustyLee123 · 12/07/2023 08:40

I tried it, the green one, and it didn’t work for me.

NannyR · 12/07/2023 08:43

No, it doesn't work. Mosquito bites are miserable and dangerous in some countries with mosquito borne diseases, I would use a tried and tested repellant, not a beauty product with anecdotal evidence.

PuppyMonkey · 12/07/2023 08:47

We use it for midges when visiting Scotland and it seems to do the trick for those buggers.

explainthistomeplease · 12/07/2023 08:47

Nope. Didn't work for me. Lived in a mosquito-ridden country and I was still covered in bites.

VeronicaBeccabunga · 12/07/2023 08:49

It really doesn't, and to make it worse it doesn't smell very nice - it reminded me of own-brand furniture polish.
DEET is just about the only stuff that works. You can get it in a cream or roll-on format so you can avoid inhaling the spray.
Also: I have an amusing photo of a huge and very itchy bite right next to one of those so-called repellent bracelet, so don't bother with those either 😂

FancyNancyShoes · 12/07/2023 08:51

Its a myth dont bother.

Deet is the only thing that really helps and even then those who are magnets for mozzies still get bitten.

NewLeafAgain · 12/07/2023 08:52

Used when camping last week and only got bit on the day I came home which was the only day I didn't bother putting it on. But also the only day I annoyed the buggers by taking the tent down so not sure it's any proof.

VeronicaBeccabunga · 12/07/2023 08:52

If you want to get all scientific this is readable, tests all the popular products and concludes that you need DEET

Which? did a report recently on insect repellents.

Basically, citronella doesn't work and it's the citronella in Skin So Soft that is supposed to keep mosquitos away. So no.

Which? report here

isthismylifenow · 12/07/2023 09:19

They discontinued it where I live, many years ago.

The blue one, that is supposed to be the repellant.

Anyway, I think lavender works better for a natural solution.

meatbaseddessert · 12/07/2023 09:25

Fark no. It doesn't work. Listen to me. IT DOESN'T WORK! Tried it.

Deet js the only thing that works.

Groutyonehereagain · 12/07/2023 09:29

It definitely isn’t true. I’ve tried it and all the other so called repellents. Two things do work Deet and Picaridin. Picaridin is a new repellent on the market which is kinder to your skin. Studies show Picaridin works as well as Deet. I was sold some in a Spanish pharmacy and I now buy it off Amazon, it definitely works for me. I’m a complete magnet for the little bastards. 🤬

FancyNancyShoes · 12/07/2023 12:33

Where abouts are you going to need protection?

I also dont recommend the local lotions and potions what you can buy in Thailand/Malaysia/India etc. but having the usual long sleeves/trousers in light colours, insect plug ins and coils if outside all help to keep them away.

I live in a country where the mozzies are problematic and I am very careful when I go out and stock up on Jungle Formular when I can. Have also tried many own brands from ASDA/Boots/Wilko etc and only JF works for us and my other half is a mozzie magnet.

Blinky21 · 15/07/2023 16:01

Skin so soft & Jungle Formula never worked on me, I find Peaceful Sleep the best, I don't think you can get it easily in the UK though so I stock up when I'm away

SistersNotCisters · 15/07/2023 16:20

It DID work but they changed the formula.
I know it used to work because I live in rural Scotland and midges are the bane of my life when doing my hobby.

It was years ago when they changed it and it became as useful as a chocolate teapot. Didn't even make my skin soft.

SunsetGirl · 15/07/2023 16:22

It never worked! The myth has persisted for 30 years - I used to go to a residential camp in the US and it didn't work then either!

70Cats · 15/07/2023 16:37

I bought Boots after sun with mosquito repellent. Seems to work but everyone different. Fairly cheap to try.

deviantfeline · 21/06/2024 07:54

@Anjoette haha I tried Avon SSS when we were camping in Canada thinking I was being terribly clever. What a fucking fool I was. I was murdered by gargantuan Mozzies and oily to boot. Vile stuff. Ruined a bunch of clothes too.

Thankfully I'd brought my Aussie strength DEET to use the following day and remained mercifully unchomped.

As an Aussie and Kiwi believe me I've tried the lot. High strength DEET is the only option.

Blueuggboots · 21/06/2024 08:07

victoriahealth.com/mrs-whites-unstung-hero-mosquito-repellent/

I recommended this a few weeks ago on MN and the person I recommended it to replied saying she'd tried it and it was brilliant.

Shinyandnew1 · 21/06/2024 08:09

I’ve heard this…from lots of Avon reps and their friends.

It doesn’t. It smells absolutely vile, will leave you greasy and slimy and you will still get bitten.

Buy something thats actually a mosquito repellent.
