I'm going sugar free for seven days, anyone up for giving it a go?

SugaryTwat · 09/07/2023 16:49

I'm only committing to seven days initially because if I went for more, I know I'd sulk and give up really quickly 😁

But seven days is do-able: Long enough to have a good shot at it, short enough that it's not daunting.

I'm not going insane. I'll still have sweeteners, just not sugary or sugary things. For me this will mean giving up:

  • Sweet cereal in the morning
  • Mid-morning chocolate biscuits
  • Chocolate bar after lunch
  • Mid-afternoon sweets
  • Chocolate bar after evening meal

I'm aiming to replace sugary puddings with fruit and snacks with nuts.

Anyone up for giving it a try?

Hey @SugaryTwat - sorry to hear your dog is still poorly and still no answers. What a worry for you. Well done for doing low sugar through this. It’s not easy is it, so we just do what we can.

Hey @Cece92 - Glad you’re feeling better today. Good to plan ahead how to change your behaviours at work so you don’t end up eating things you’re trying to avoid. Have you had a good holiday?

I’m doing a lot better today. Well rested and at a good part of my cycle. I’ve enjoyed the first day of the hols. Haven’t even thought about sugary foods today.

Would anyone else like to join in?

Cece92 · 22/07/2023 19:21

Hi @Stones123 yes it's been good actually our kids broke up June 30th and go back august 15th so we are almost half way through now. Phewwwwww xxx

Stones123 · 23/07/2023 08:26

Ah glad you’ve had a good one so far! Ours only broke up on Friday so only had 1 day so far, but so far so good!

rockingbird · 23/07/2023 16:12

I fell completely off the wagon on this. A proper curve ball thrown in my circle but I'm ahead of the game again and will start again tomorrow. Think from reading through its best to avoid all sugar and sweetener so go completely zero and see how I get on.

Cece92 · 23/07/2023 20:38

Our schools usually get 7 weeks but they finished a week later and have cut it to 6. My cousins are in Liverpool and my gran would take me and my sister and my cousin for a week to a caravan in the summer but always had to wait until end of July until she was finished. Xx

Best of luck with this!!! I'll give it a try as well. My sugar consumption is ridiculous really but I've got a really sweet tooth lol but gonna give this a go as well.

How's it going for you so far? X

Tontostitis · 24/07/2023 16:51

Good luck rockingbird it will be worth it.
Had a Crafting session with my bestie today she consumed most a packet of ginger nuts and 2 cans of diet something whilst I had grapes and lemon water. First time it wasn't hard or an effort. She was supersupportive and didn't mention it, offer me one or comment which was fantastic.

Stones123 · 24/07/2023 21:34

How did day 1 go @Cece92 @rockingbird @Emamazing @Tontostitis and anyone else who joined in?

I was fine again today, no cravings at all - I think because it’s the right part of my menstrual cycle coupled with being completely mentally stimulated today with an outing I’d planned for the kids.

Stones123 · 24/07/2023 21:38

And well done @Tontostitis xx

Cece92 · 24/07/2023 21:46

Hi @Stones123 today was hard but I bought sugar free gum this morning as a tactic and it seemed to work. I had a filling breakfast at work with tea and then ate when I got home I had fruit at work mid afternoon and my sugar free water. I made veggie bolognaise for dinner tonight with pasta the sauce was a bit sweet or maybe I was imagining it lol. Someone did say I was looking well today I said 'that's what no sugar for a week does' lol xx

Emamazing · 24/07/2023 22:00

@Stones123 @Cece92 Well done both on doing amazingly today! You should be proud of yourselves. I did ok... Had a lot of hunger feeling which I think was sugar withdrawal so think I was a bit cranky which was funny because DH told me to have some Skittles and a cola because I'm unbearable lol but I didn't and am glad I've managed to stick to it so far

Gonna take Cece92s great idea and get some sugar free gum tomorrow. Slight headache now which I'm guessing is lack of sugar but hoping it'll be better after a good night's sleep. Xx

Stones123 · 24/07/2023 22:34

@Cece92 @Emamazing Great to hear your updates. Well done on a successful day 1!

@Emamazing - the headache should go soon enough, try drinking plenty of water to wash it through.

Cece92 · 24/07/2023 22:42

@Emamazing I had a headache in day 3/4 it did subside and by Friday I felt okay. I didn't realised how much sugar I actually ate until last week. I usually have at least a can of Coke Zero at work but I resisted temptation. There's a few who are calorie counting at work so I didn't feel too alone. I've cut my carbs for to 1 'healthy' carb a day. Switched to brown bread which has pissed DD off as she hates it 😂 I definitely recommend the gum. It helped a lot today not want to eat in between meals xx

bakewellbride · 24/07/2023 22:50

Can I please join in? I just finished day 1.

Stones123 · 25/07/2023 07:43

Welcome, @bakewellbride ! Well done on completing day 1. 💪

Day 2 here we come!

bakewellbride · 25/07/2023 09:24

@Stones123 thank you! This morning I had some ridiculously overpriced sugar free granola from Holland and Barrett. It was looking a bit sad so I added sultanas, banana, blueberries & yoghurt. It was really nice but it does feel weird not putting sugar in my morning coffee. How are u doing? X

Emamazing · 25/07/2023 11:15

@Cece92 lol sorry for your DD 😋 I think mine would react the same way if it isn't white bread then it's sour face and moaning time lol. Headache is better today, still there but a lot less noticable. I had some horrible sugar free breakfast this morning, ugh was gross, but DH enjoyed it. I picked myself up some gum and am surviving day 2, so far..

I hope you're doing well today as well 😊

Cece92 · 25/07/2023 11:28

@Emamazing I've got a bottle of sugar free water and gum here. I air fryed some bacon and mushrooms for breakfast. Don't know if I'm keen on air fryed bacon lol. I cut the fat off it as can't stand it and it was crispy but weird texture. Not sure what I'm going to do for lunch. Might make me and DD a salad or something. Just want a big bag of revels 😂 welcome @bakewellbride hope you are doing well xx

Tontostitis · 25/07/2023 14:03

Good luck all the new starters my porridge made with grated apple and topped just with yogurt actually tasted fine this morning for the first time since I dropped the sugar or honey topping

Emamazing · 25/07/2023 15:04

@Cece92 I think your breakfast was better than mine tho never had bacon done like that, maybe tomorrow! Hope you enjoyed your lunch. What did you have? We had crackers DD's didn't like it lol but I thought we all might as well try some sugar free 😂 Good shout on sugar free water. Added that to my shopping list. I so wanted a cola earlier but I'm doing well making good progress.

@Tontostitis Ooh your porridge sounds yummy! I might borrow that recipe for later this week. How are you finding going sugar free so far?? I've felt really hungry today but doing better than yesterday.

Stones123 · 25/07/2023 23:51

@bakewellbride - it does feel weird at first doesn’t it. You do get used to it after a while. I’m doing ok thanks. I had a really exhausted start to the day but work is very absorbing so that helped me get through the day. I fell asleep on my break though! But I did fine sugar-wise, another day without cravings. As I said though, it’s a good time of the month for me so I think I have that on my side. And I’ve been doing this for 18 months or so, which means it gets easier to find a rhythm again if you fall off.

@Emamazing @Cece92 and @Tontostitis - well done all of you!!

Day 3 tomorrow everyone.

By the way @SugaryTwat the flowers I bought myself at your recommendation when I had a wobble are still going - thank you again! Hope you’re doing OK. Sending love. X

Emamazing · 26/07/2023 08:19

@Stones123 sorry you were exhausted hope you have more energy today. How are you doing? I'm tired today. I've still got the hunger feeling as well but nothing satisfies it. I really need some sweets or cola lol had some bran flakes for breakfast but they were totally disgusting. My eldest looked at hers with the biggest puppy eyes ever lol we both ended up leaving most of it and I made her some toast 😂

I'm busy today tho so should help take my mind off things. I hope you have a great dayX

Stones123 · 26/07/2023 11:12

@Emamazing I’m doing better today thanks. My ex gave me a much needed lie in today by agreeing to drop the kids at 11am so I’m having a lazy morning. Watched some morning tv with my brekkie and now lounging on my bed mumsnetting 😀 Feels so good to drop the reigns of life for a bit.

Sorry to hear you’re struggling with hunger. I hope you find a way through that works for you. Xx

Stones123 · 27/07/2023 22:03

How’s everyone doing?

Would anyone else like to jump in and join?

Stones123 · 28/07/2023 12:17

Day 5 of this round for those that are doing it.

I’ve got the free ‘I am Sober’ app which helped me for a bit. Just in case it helps anyone else on here too. You can set it to track your hours/minutes being sugar free.
