I'm going sugar free for seven days, anyone up for giving it a go?

SugaryTwat · 09/07/2023 16:49

I'm only committing to seven days initially because if I went for more, I know I'd sulk and give up really quickly 😁

But seven days is do-able: Long enough to have a good shot at it, short enough that it's not daunting.

I'm not going insane. I'll still have sweeteners, just not sugary or sugary things. For me this will mean giving up:

  • Sweet cereal in the morning
  • Mid-morning chocolate biscuits
  • Chocolate bar after lunch
  • Mid-afternoon sweets
  • Chocolate bar after evening meal

I'm aiming to replace sugary puddings with fruit and snacks with nuts.

Anyone up for giving it a try?

Svelte and gaming sounds wonderful!

I'm not actually after losing weight, I'm pretty happy with my weight. I'd like to tone up, feel better and just have a better diet around snacks and puddings!

I stopped about 3 weeks ago after reading Allen Carr’s book Good Sugar Bad Sugar. I’m currently on holiday and have still been able to keep it up which is nothing short of a miracle for me!

Excellent! Would you be willing to say a bit more about you being no-sugar? Do you never have sugar? Why was it the best thing you ever did, what's better? Do you find it hard to stick to? What inspired you to get started?
Sorry if this is all too nosey, please don't answer anything that's too intrusive. I'm genuinely fascinated.

It was March 5 2021 the Friday before the schools went back after lockdown, I had stuffed so much crap, I felt awful, I could tick pretty much every single box on the nhs symptoms for pre diabetes, so I flounced and said that was it.

I did have withdrawal headaches for a week or so, then I had a covid jab so it could have been that. I set rules I could eat what I want as long as I made it from scratch and it didn’t have sugar. I was pretty rigid for the first year, I do now have weeks where we have too many ready meals and wine is my downfall but I don’t have any soft drinks, sweets, biscuits, chocolates or cake. I lost 4.5 stone and around 1 stone has crept on this year it’s wine and crisps hence wanting to join you to cut the crispy snacks.

Billybagpuss · 09/07/2023 17:22

Improvements all the diabetes symptoms have gone, I have more energy, bizarrely verrucas that I’d had for years dropped off in the first 5 weeks.

LadyLolaRuben · 09/07/2023 17:27

Oh I'd love to. Ive just eaten two slices of toast when I know I need to knock carbs on the head

SilverGlitterBaubles · 09/07/2023 17:51

Does alcohol count?

Namesecrets · 09/07/2023 20:35

Please can I join? I also need to feel its just a short term thing so I stick to it, but hopefully I'll love it and carry on after a week.

I work from home and eat sugary treats out of boredom.

How much do I need to cut out to see some benefit do you think? Just sugary treats or also things like yoghurt and fruit?

I don't think I can cut carbs like pasta and bread at this point but hopefully I'll still see benefits?

beeny · 10/07/2023 11:03

Really feel like a biscuit, daughter brought some Bens Cookies from London yesterday....

SugaryTwat · 10/07/2023 11:58

Day One.

How’s everyone doing?
So far today: I’ve had bran flakes, a few cups of tea, and a lunch of chicken and salad (I eat lunch early because I’m up early). Managed to swerve mid-morning chocolate biscuits and an after-lunch chocolate bar. No trouble.
So far, so good. No cravings.

Yes, welcome!

I'm cutting out sugary treats but I'm telling myself sweetners are okay.

I gave up sugar a few months ago (absolutely no chocolate, sweets, cereals. Also no carb-heavy foods like pasta, potatoes, bread) and I’ll give you a couple of tips… Prepare for day two or three to be tough. You’ll possibly feel irritable, fatigued, restless, a bit anxious.

Also, stick to fruit with lower sugar levels. Blueberries, strawberries and raspberries are ideal. It’s really easy to get carried away with fruit when you’re craving a sugar hit.

rockingbird · 10/07/2023 12:24

Hello, just checking in.. all I've had today so far is a green tea and water. I'm twitching for something hence me checking in. Wondering about an apple 🍎 natural sugar but is it high in sugar I'm wondering/googling! I've been doing intermittent fasting for over a month now and lost a little bit but I fear sugar is my vice! Just need to choose wisely during non-fast times

SugaryTwat · 10/07/2023 17:39

@rockingbird I'd just eat the apple. I'm not getting too involved in sugar content of different fruits etc. I'm just avoiding refined/added sugar.

I hope you ate the apple!

Off to cook a fish pie and green veg now. No pudding. I might have more bran flakes later if I get hungry.

Will check back tomorrow.

Keep going, ladies!

Thank you, that's really useful. I'm not too fussed about low sugar fruits TBH. For this trial I'm focused on cutting out refined/added sugar rather than worrying too much about high natural sugars if that makes sense.

BUT, I absolutely appreciate your advice and will try and stick to low sugar fruits.

Day two coming up tomorrow and I'm doing a bit, difficult piece of work. FML.

I gave up sugar and flour about 5 months ago and lost 2 stone in just over 3m, but the benefits are more varied - energy, sleep, hair, skin and overall health as well as a new life for old clothes that were too small! I didn't have a problem with fruit or flour but the cravings will likely continue if you're still getting the drip drip of sugar so I said I would do it 100% and it's the first time I've done it for longer than 2m, when previously I would have continued having brown bread, bananas etc. I am on a programme/support group as my relationship with sugar was not a positive thing so I needed to cut it. None is sooo much easier than a limited some, for me. Besr of luck OP. Great to be free of sugar!

Watchkeys · 10/07/2023 17:57

For me this only worked when I cut out sugar and sweet flavours in general. Fake sugars make me crave sweet flavours, so I'm bound to fall off the wagon at some point.

I stopped the sweet flavours, never went sweeter/more sugar than a piece of fruit, and the cravings stopped. I have chocolate now, sometimes, or sweets, but it's nothing like it used to be. I can leave a bar of chocolate in the cupboard, now, when for years, I didn't understand how anybody could.

Exactly, any sugar Inc fake, will continue the cravings unfortunately. How long have you been off it please? That's amazing that you can even have some in moderation now. I don't know if I'll ever be able to do that.

Watchkeys · 10/07/2023 18:08

@mikado1

Years, not weeks or months. It's definitely long term. I never thought I'd be able to do it either. I quit sugar, flour, and sweet snacks in general, ages ago, for a few weeks. It was very quick. Sometimes I over-indulge, but it's quite easy to 'un-hook' myself, and it's blips rather than re-addiction.

Good luck!

mikado1 · 10/07/2023 18:15

Well done! Really impressive. Being able to get over the blips is part of it for sure.

beeny · 10/07/2023 19:44

I wasn't strong but tomorrow is another day !

bellac11 · 10/07/2023 19:48

I wouldnt have sweetners

Your body will try to prepare itself for sugar because of the way the brain interprets the food and it wont train your taste buds away from sweet stuff.
