I'm going sugar free for seven days, anyone up for giving it a go?

SugaryTwat · 09/07/2023 16:49

I'm only committing to seven days initially because if I went for more, I know I'd sulk and give up really quickly 😁

But seven days is do-able: Long enough to have a good shot at it, short enough that it's not daunting.

I'm not going insane. I'll still have sweeteners, just not sugary or sugary things. For me this will mean giving up:

  • Sweet cereal in the morning
  • Mid-morning chocolate biscuits
  • Chocolate bar after lunch
  • Mid-afternoon sweets
  • Chocolate bar after evening meal

I'm aiming to replace sugary puddings with fruit and snacks with nuts.

Anyone up for giving it a try?

If you're cutting sugar completely you might find it tricky wrt bread. Good luck though.

RedLem0nade · 10/07/2023 20:08

So far so good. Had raw veggies, hummus, some cheese, apple and nuts for lunch. Then veggie stir fry with wholewheat noodles for dinner.

Just had a nice cup of coffee there.

Entering ambush alley now though. I’ve just sat down with my book- this is peak chocolate craving time for me.

I have nothing in the house thankfully (DH helpfully finished off the last of the bar of chocolate that was in the fridge. WHAT A HERO!). There are fixings for toast and marmalade though so, must…. resist….. I think I’ll just get stuck in reading and hopefully that’ll distract me!

Tontostitis · 10/07/2023 20:17

I've just done my first sugar free day and am aiming for a week so I'd live to join in. I've done it before and had terrible headaches on days 2 /3 🙄last time

Ihaterain1 · 10/07/2023 20:27

Can i join please? I have done 30 days of no sugar recently and have reduced it a lot in general, but have had a very stressful week and for some reason i webt mad on chocolate and biscuits today, so 7 days sugar detox would reset me again, i would also love to quit sugar free squash.

DinkeyDonkey · 10/07/2023 20:39

I've just seen this but I'm doing something similar. I started loosely last week but then let myself eat what I wanted at the weekend. I have had a bit of dark chocolate but no sugary chocolate bars, sweets, sweet drinks...

AthenaWhite · 10/07/2023 20:50

Can I join? I gave up alcohol in January but became a sugar monster. It's like a hole that I can't fill. Like alcohol I think zero is the way forward. I'll try the week and take it from there. Sugar free day today. Had raspberries, strawberries and blueberries in full fat Greek yoghurt for my pud and very nice it was.

HabberdasheryAddict · 10/07/2023 21:15

Becky Gillespy has lots of short videos on cutting out sugar and carbs:

Stones123 · 10/07/2023 21:46

I’ll join you.

I cut out sugar, dairy, alcohol, caffeine and processed food about 18 mths ago (and am a coeliac so no gluten for decades).

I’ve been really bad at sticking to the sugar/dairy part of it for the last few months though so I’m glad I’ve found this thread as I need a way of getting back onto it. I’m sooooo much more well when I’m doing it and I’m not one of you guys who can have a bit and not go into addiction mode so I need to just do a complete blanket cut out.

Here’s to tomorrow everyone!

Namesecrets · 10/07/2023 21:57

I managed Day 1! I had no sugary treats at all, and just had one piece of fruit through the day.

Good luck for tomorrow everyone!

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 10/07/2023 22:05

Following as I may try this as of next week- inspired

LadyLolaRuben · 11/07/2023 00:27

I did day 1 ok. Egg and avocado for breakfast. Apple and cheese for lunch. Feta salad for dinner with a few nuts and dried fruit for afters. Didnt feel hungry during the day either and no sugar cravings

Day 2 everyone - let’s smash this!

SugaryTwat · 11/07/2023 09:46

Welcome to all the newbies!

Day two people! Like @Stones123 totally up for smashing it.

So far: Bran flakes and tea
Lunch: Cheese sandwich
Tea: Chicken curry
Snacks: Nuts

I'm at an exercise class later which is always a bit of a killer and makes me crave biscuit-y stuff. But I shall be strong, might even treat myself to an extra bowl of bran flakes. Living dangerously!

This looks very carb heavy, @SugaryTwat ... where are the vegetables?

I would really urge you to read THE SUGAR SOLUTION to get a handle on a better way of eating.

And/or watch some of Dr Becky Gillaspy's YouTube

Watchkeys · 11/07/2023 11:17

Bran flakes (Kellogs):
INGREDIENTS: Wholewheat (59%), wheat bran (18%), wholewheat flour, sugar, barley malt extract, glucose syrup, salt, natural flavouring, niacin, iron, vitamin B6, riboflavin, thiamin, folic acid, vitamin D, vitamin B12

4th ingredient is sugar. Read the labels. Bran flakes will set you off perfectly for a sugar craving an hour or 2 after you eat them, when you've burnt through the sugar in them.

Watchkeys · 11/07/2023 11:18

barley malt extract, glucose syrup

These are also just sugar. It's got a lotta names.

Billybagpuss · 11/07/2023 11:43

So far crisp free but yesterday was a quite bad bread day

Stones123 · 11/07/2023 13:16

Well done @Billybagpuss Keep going x

SugaryTwat · 11/07/2023 13:32

Great work, keep at it!

Day two's going well here - nothing sugary like chocolate or biscuits or sweets.

But I'm mostly nervous about my exercise class later on which always leaves me craving a ginger bread man. And today in class, I'm going for a personal best which will make me want my ginger bread man even more 😂I'll need all the willpower later today.

Namesecrets · 11/07/2023 17:18

Also going to exercise later, I would usually be eating a chocolate bar right now telling myself it is fine as I'm exercising later!

Luckily there are none in the house. Also trying to limit the crisps as that's another downfall of mine.

RedLem0nade · 11/07/2023 19:45

Good day here too and so far no sugar cravings but I really think they will hit soon surely.

I also managed to talk DH away from the edge- found him hunting in the freezer and he had discovered a cornetto which I wrested from his hands😂

Stones123 · 11/07/2023 21:07

So far so good here. Stressful shift at work and wanted to get something as a treat to myself but because of THIS THREAD I was able to talk myself out of it.

Cece92 · 12/07/2023 00:04

I have a few things on this week but I'm going to try next week for a week. I've developed a really bad sugary sweet tooth recently. Good thing is I don't take sugar in my tea or coffee it's like the only thing I don't have sugar in 😂😂 good luck everyone.xx

SugaryTwat · 12/07/2023 08:58

Day three!

I managed to be super strong after exercise yesterday, even though I smashed my PB at the class.

I have nuts and fruit after tea.

I have a really irritating and shitty email at work this morning which has made me crave a chocolate hobnob. But I've resisted.

Bran flakes and a brew for breakfast.
No idea what's for lunch, I might need to nip to the shop.
Tea is tofu chilli and tortillas.

Snacks, nuts and fruit.

Let's smash it ladies!!
