Posted a thread last week about how DS1 has a rash on his face and I had the same rash all over my body. It was red and itchy and had very swollen joints and pain.
Anyway, DS2 has now got it. He had a bit of a cold, then this morning has woken with the rash all over his body, face, behind his ears etc. He seems very hot, and his eyes look really heavy and sore.He has a cough and is quite snotty
I know it's probably what DS1 and I had, but can slapped cheek cause a child to feel so ill, or could it be something else? Ds1 only had the rash and nothing else, he was fine, no aches or pains, no itch, no temperature or anything

Those symptoms in DS2 sound suspiciously like measles. I haven't nursed measles so I could be way off the mark but I would definitely ring NHS Direct if I were you.

saltire · 24/02/2008 13:32

Measles.
here is my original thread. The GP said that it was just a virus when I took myself and DS1
Will have to find out, he is sleeping now - which is something he rarely does during the day

I know Saltire, but it's the combination of cough, runny nose, high temp, rash all over (esp. behind the ears) and sore eyes that does make me wonder. NHS Direct will be able to help you suss out what it is.

Janni · 24/02/2008 13:42

Also - in measles they look for white spots inside the mouth.

Flllightattendant · 24/02/2008 13:48

Not sure if slapped cheek can do that, tis possible...mine has measles atm, but was hot for several days then seemed better before rash came.
Ring your dr and get him seen, sounds very poorly

Ledodgy · 24/02/2008 13:48

Yeah check for the kolplix (sp?) Spots inside his cheeks.

Flllightattendant · 24/02/2008 13:51

I've been trying to look in Ds's mouth for days but can't get him to open it, little bugger!!

Flllightattendant · 24/02/2008 13:52

Here it says you can have a fever with it, how hot is he exactly, any idea?

NAB3wishesfor2008 · 24/02/2008 13:55

Doesn't sound like slapped cheek as children are not generally poorly with it. DD had it a couple of months ago.

Is measles going around as this is the second thread I have seen. Ds2 hasn't had his jabs yet.

Flllightattendant · 24/02/2008 14:00

Nab, you can give them the measles jab from 6 months if necessary - if exposed they recommend it apparently. It can lessen the severity at least.
How old is your littlest chap now?

They did say it was the second case they'd seen yesterday, possibly. It's been quite a mild winter.

Look at this though, it shows the increase over the last few years Graph from HPA

my friend on here her little ds as been told he as it am worried my dd who as problens may get it?, we saw them last sunday and he got spots in week, could my children still get it? and i put a thread on other day i feel like you but no spots is this posible my joints are hurting so much this morningi could cry

nutcracker · 24/02/2008 14:08

I thought measles when i read your description too.

My kids have had slapped cheek but definatly weren't that poorly.

saltire · 24/02/2008 14:09

NAB - DS1 had a rash on his face and arms and was otherwise healthy, the GP said it was a virus, but I poste don here and poeple thought it culd be slapped cheek. The more i look at DS2 the more I think tis not slapped cheek. When he wakens I will look in his mouth. I still ahve swollen joints although they have eased considerably,a dn I still itch. My rahs itched, whereas Ds1s didn't

Saltire - on the NHS Direct site they describe the typical measles rash. Have you looked at it - someone linked to the site on this thread.

saltire · 24/02/2008 14:15

measles info

He has had his MMR though, could he still get it?

Flllightattendant · 24/02/2008 14:16

Was Ds2 ill before today though, I think you have to remember that measles would be more like a temp etc for a few days before he was spotty.

Flllightattendant · 24/02/2008 14:16

Apparently he could get it but slightly milder than otherwise, iyswim.

saltire · 24/02/2008 14:18

He has been quite snotty for a few days of days and had a really dry cough for almost a week.

OP posts:
Flllightattendant · 24/02/2008 14:21

Could be then

Mine was like that but hot too - 39ish for a few days/nights.
Good news is that once the spots arrived he seemed to be better (apart from ear infection that came with it!)

God, MN is hosting an epidemic by the looks of it.

Janni · 24/02/2008 14:21

sadly they can still get it, even after vaccination. Does his rash sound like that on the measles info. site?

Flllightattendant · 24/02/2008 14:22

The red eyes sounds suspicious Salty. Can you get to an out of hours doc today?

NAB3wishesfor2008 · 24/02/2008 14:22

Ds2 is 2.

When DD had slapped cheek she was just hot with red cheeks. Not ill in herself but she did feel hot and cold.

Janni · 24/02/2008 14:26

Saltire - if it turns out that he does have measles, the big thing to remember is to nurse him in a darkened room as his eyes will be very sensitive. Lots of fluid, take advice from G.P. on controlling his temp and drinks with Vit A are recommended (eg blackcurrant juice) to help protect his eyes.

I'm only saying all this as a PRECAUTION. We don't know if it is measles and please try not to panic - the vast majority of well-nourished children who get measles are absolutely fine.

Janni · 24/02/2008 14:28

Saltire - I really wouldn't take him out. If you have a strong suspicion of measles, someone should come to you. Have you called NHS Direct?

saltire · 24/02/2008 14:29

his rash looks like this, only more spread out. Except on his face, which is bright red - well his cheeks and behind his ears are.
Mine looked like I had been painted with red paint
