So dd has been losing weight for a few weeks, is skin and bone. Size 4 uk size.

came out in a rash this morning which she reckons feels like shingles which she’s had a few times. But I don’t think it looks like shingles? It’s itchy. There is bruising over her legs for no reason. She feels generally unwell.

she’s been trying to get a gp appointment for over a week with no luck. Rang again today and they told her to see a chemist. Chemist has told her she needs to see a doctor. Still can’t get an appointment

anyone any idea.

I’m furious and have told them this morning that they cancelled her appointment yesterday.

the receptionist told me at 8:40 she’d get the practice manager to call me urgently. Still waiting. I’ll be putting in an official complaint

This is absolutely unacceptable conduct from the GP surgery. Most lay people would know that these are potential warning signs for leukaemia or another serious condition. She should have been seen immediately when she first notified them 😡

HaveYouHeardOfARoadAtlas · 30/06/2023 10:50

I told the receptionist I thought she had leukaemia and might be dying

Well she’s been seen at the hospital and she’s not had a blood test. They said she has a disease beginning with A but she couldn’t understand the dr. But he said it was harmless

I wasn’t there as I’m stuck at work

so am still stressed

Has she got a discharge letter from hospital@HaveYouHeardOfARoadAtlas

HaveYouHeardOfARoadAtlas · 30/06/2023 12:56

I doubt it. I’ve never had one from a&e. I’ve messaged her to ask if she’s actually been kicked out. I’m hoping she’s just been seen by someone junior and will get reviews by someone more senior who’ll actually do a blood test

GrazingSheep · 30/06/2023 14:37

The hospital is as bad as the gp

Valhalla17 · 30/06/2023 14:47

How can it be harmless if she's losing weight, is bruising and has a rash?

You need to take her to another hospital urgently.

MBappse · 30/06/2023 14:54

Addisons Disease?

I am not a doctor. It's an autoimmune disease I have heard of beginning with A.

Not sure if you can diagnose withouta blood test.

Some of the symptoms match up.

Sorry you have had such bad support.

Kiwiandstrawberries · 30/06/2023 14:54

Did she actually go to AE ?

HaveYouHeardOfARoadAtlas · 30/06/2023 17:12

Kiwiandstrawberries · 30/06/2023 14:54

Did she actually go to AE ?

Yeah I’m sure she did because she was texting me steaming mad about kids running around, etc.

anyway the gp surgery has rung her back and she has an appointment in a nearby town GP surgery tomorrow. 🤷🏻‍♀️

i think a&e just looked at the rash. No idea if she forgot to tell them the other stuff or didn’t emphasis it. The disease beginning with a (or possibly e now) is a long word, is harmless but presents like meningitis. So no idea.

anaemia?

HaveYouHeardOfARoadAtlas · 30/06/2023 17:47

Don’t think anemia as they didn’t do a blood test and I have never heard of it causing a rash.

OP posts:
ShinyPikachu · 30/06/2023 17:53

Amyloidosis? Although I wouldn't say it sounds harmless but it came up in a search for conditions which can present like meningitis.

www.nhs.uk/conditions/amyloidosis/

Teamrofl · 30/06/2023 18:01

Henoch Schonlein Purpura (HSP)? Doesn’t start with A or E but can be confused with meningitis.

HaveYouHeardOfARoadAtlas · 30/06/2023 18:12

I wonder if it was Idiopathic thrombocytopenia, but if they’ve dismissed it as that when she’s on blood thinners and waved her out the door then that’s very shit.

Unsure754 · 30/06/2023 22:30

I repeatedly got that rash on my legs when I was suffering with severe anemia.
Other symptoms were heart palpitations, chest pain, feeling very cold, utter exhaustion, headache and odd pain in limbs.

Would push for a blood test, GP kept telling me I didn’t need one but finally gave in.
Was immediately admitted to hospital for blood transfusions.

HaveYouHeardOfARoadAtlas · 04/07/2023 17:21

Finally got a GP appt today and was sent straight to hospital. Is currently sat waiting for a bed, they’ve started IV fluids. 20 hr wait for a bed apparently

And the shit thing is Dd reckons the a&e dr last week lied on her discharge notes. The gp today asked her why she didn’t tell the a&e dr about all her other symptoms and Dd reckons she did but the a&e dr said rash only, otherwise well.

because I was so cross last week on Fri our gp surgery sent her to another gp surgery on Saturday……they’re in some federation. And that gp said he couldn’t do a blood test for her because she wasn’t a patient at his surgery so just sent her off with no follow up.

dancinginthesky · 04/07/2023 17:28

Thank goodness she's being admitted today, hopefully she gets some answers. The best thing I ever did was leave a GP practice that didn't have any urgency when I knew something was wrong- please consider asking her to move to a new practice

Looks like self-harm marks to me. How old is she?

Having dealt with my own SH and working with young people who do have self regulatory behaviors that result in cuts and bruises. This doesn't quite look that that to me. If there was dug in scratch lines I would believe so, or wounds that had some form of intentional appearance. Suggesting SH in circumstances like this isn't entirely helpful unless there's signs there. Nothing from OP suggests depressive behaviors. If there was concerns for that I'm sure OP would have had much more difficulty getting a photo for one. Self harmers tend to hide their wounds, unless the wounds were accidental. I could see them being from a rash OP's child scratched a lot but other than that I don't imagine SH is the concern here.

This is the sort of treatment that gives medical staff a really bad name. It makes me so so cross. Also the ‘federation’ thingy (our gp has it too) shows that it’s just delay tactics and really doesn’t help, well not in cases like yours. It’s like being put on hold after going through companies answering systems of press 1 for … press 2 for … then you think you’re getting there and it’s press 1 for…. press 2 for…. all over again! Hope your DD will get proper care and attention now and the wait for a bed will not be as bad as feared. Thank goodness your dd had you to keep trying for her.

HaveYouHeardOfARoadAtlas · 04/07/2023 18:00

Yes. I made an appt for he today…….she was kind of the opinion that she’s seen two doctors now, neither of which seem concerned so why bother anymore. I must admit I was wondering if I was over reacting /fussing a bit but feel vindicated now as if she’s getting an iv drip and being admitted something isn’t right.

I self-harmed for over 30 years. It was a reasonable question given the available information.

JustDanceAddict · 04/07/2023 21:02

I’m glad your dd got to hospital in the end and I hope they can treat her successfully, but her treatment is appalling. I’d be complaining to practice manager and Pals.
In contrast dd of similar age went to GP last week with an awful persistent sore throat, he thought it was something that needed immediate a&e attention - turned out it wasnt what he thought, but was glandular fever & additional bacterial infection after having bloods taken and she was out within 5 hours after being on a drip Is going back to GP for repeat bloods tmw to check liver function.
