Can I catch shingles from my son having had the chicken pox vaccine? Feeling awful and have a rash down one side of my body.

I believe so. Nip down the chemist and ask for them to take a look.

SunnyshowersinMay · 19/05/2023 12:18

Yes. Although you haven’t ‘caught’ it, the virus lies dormant in your body and can flare up when your immune system is low. Get yourself seen today, urgent care or walk in centre, you ideally need to start the antivirals for shingles within the first few days.

SunnyshowersinMay · 19/05/2023 12:19

Missed that your dc had the vaccine and not chicken pox! Still sounds very like shingle, get seen today.

Candyfloss2 · 19/05/2023 15:10

I heard nhs won’t give vaccine to under 70 .
i went to private and beg with money to pay . The private said sorry not for under 50 .

Tailfeather · 19/05/2023 15:18

@Candyfloss2 Shingles or chicken pox?

Shingles —-cold sores on face lips and chin

Violinist64 · 19/05/2023 17:48

You cannot catch shingles from chickenpox. Shingles is activated by stress from chickenpox which has been dormant in the body. For instance, l had it when my oldest child was three months old and I had had a very difficult birth and needed follow-up appointments. My gp told me this then. Another gp reiterated this when my second child came out with shingles when he was six. Both doctors told me that you can, however, catch chickenpox from shingles. This proved true in our family as our youngest child caught chickenpox from their older sibling’s shingles.

Tailfeather · 19/05/2023 17:51

@Candyfloss2 I was talking about the chicken pox vaccine that you can pay for privately for any age.

Tailfeather · 19/05/2023 17:52

@Violinist64 Thank you. That's what I thought. Just a complete coincidence then! I hope he doesn't catch cp from me before the vaccine kicks in!

You dont catch shingles from anyone. Shingles is a reactivation of chickenpox that you've had in the past. You can catch chicken pox from shingles but not shingles from chicken pox

dementedpixie · 19/05/2023 17:56

Shingles will only pass on chicken pox through contact with the fluid from shingles blisters so if you keep them covered he should be OK.

You could see about getting antivirals for shingles

Shingles —-cold sores on face lips and chin

Shingles can appear anywhere on the body and follows the line of a nerve. Generally affects one side at a time

Candyfloss2 · 19/05/2023 18:02

I am confused :
so chicken box —- shingles ( lots cold sores on 1 side more than 3-5 at a time )

cold sore —- contagious —- cold sore.

chicken pox —— contagious —- chickenpox

Right ?

i am gutted why they don’t sell under 50 Shingles vaccine . Unless side effect ?

Candyfloss2 · 19/05/2023 18:03

I had chicken pox
I had chicken pox vaccine after chicken pox .
i have had cold sore before and after chicken pox vaccine .

i just had 5 cold sore on my chin and lips during period .

which I think it’s shingles

Tailfeather · 19/05/2023 18:04

@Candyfloss2 That just sounds like normal cold sores?

That's herpes simplex not zoster (shingles)

jamdan21 · 19/05/2023 18:10

That's weird this thread coming up today. I'm 70 and had a text from the doctors today to go in for the shingles vaccine. Do you think I should have it ?

In the UK its only offered to people aged 70 to 79 as it's been found to be not effective in younger and older people:

Shingles vaccine overview

An NHS vaccine to prevent shingles – a common, painful skin disease – is available for people in their 70s.

Candyfloss2 · 19/05/2023 18:15

@jamdan21
i would jump on the offer

jamdan21 · 19/05/2023 18:16

Thankyou I'll book my appointment. I've just googled shingles and it looks awful.

Tailfeather · 19/05/2023 18:17

@Candyfloss2 but it sounds like you are getting cold sores, not shingles. Sounds like there isn't a vaccine for cold sores yet, but hope for one in the future.

@DisplayPurposesOnly
Gp gives out anti virus prescription easily here ? I heard in EU much easier than here.

I've had shingles twice, 25 years apart. I'll be queuing to get the vaccine when I'm eligible!

My first time was mild, my second was thoroughly miserable (but bearable). A colleague had it in his eyes which doesn't bear thinking about

DisplayPurposesOnly · 19/05/2023 18:19

Yes, they do but the anti-virals need to be taken quickly for them to be effective.
