For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information by following the link at the very bottom of the page

Hello. Got home last night, put children to bed, fell asleep in DS's bed.

DH came home, woke me up, I mumbled around the place, ate a banana and went to bed. Where did my evening go?

MrsCarrot · 21/02/2008 10:05

Morning, was a grim day. Have ranted here

ladywombling · 21/02/2008 10:35

Poor Mrs C, he sounds like a monstrously unsympathetic Dr. How are you feeling today?

MrsCarrot · 21/02/2008 10:53

a bit better, thanks. I might write though, it sounds like other hospitals have a much better policy.

FrayedKnot · 21/02/2008 17:28

Hello

MrsC it really does amaze me how totally detached from their patients some Drs can be... Hope they have sorted it and you won;t have any further problems.

I have had usual pms headache all day and doesn;t help that we are having a new security system at work and so have had drilling and banging for the lst two mornings

Having tomaoto, mushroom, pepper, rocket, & spinach lasagne shortly [mmm]

JoanOfark · 21/02/2008 18:00

Hello.

I had a fried egg sandwich for lunch. The first in my whole life.

FrannyandZooey · 21/02/2008 18:19

the FIRST egg sandwich? My god was it like some kind of epiphany?

I have had (lunch) salad of pepper, cucumber, lettuce, tomatoes, hummus, kidney beans

(dinner) corn and broccoli and mange tout

I've eaten egg in a sandwich, but not fried egg. I wasn't very impressed and I won't do it again.

dinny · 21/02/2008 18:23

I've asked this before ages ago, but wouold someone be kind enough to post a typical day's worth of fruit/veg and how you can pack in 10 plus? thanks!

FrayedKnot · 21/02/2008 18:38

I've never eaten a fried egg sandwich either, because I don;t like fried eggs

Dinny, this is my way, others may have different suggestions:

Muesli for breakfast with ample dried fruit - usually a mixture of sultanas, cherries and cranberries. I count that as 1 portion.

Fruit mid-morning - equivalent to 2 portions - I often cheat and buy ready prepared fruit salad from the sandwich van that calls at work, or take a punnet of blueberries. If I'm not feeling flush it just has to be two ordinary pieces of fresh fruit.

Lunch - has to involve a good 2-3 portions otehrwise you wont make it, imo.

So, either a big salad, plate of crudites, or vegetable soup (usually I count soup as 2).

That leaves your evening meal - 3-4 portions is easy here - especially as you can include pulses - just make sure your meal consist of at least 3 different types of veg, and maybe some beans or lentils.

If you still need to make it up to 10, eat 1-2 pieces of fruit in the evening.

I don;t eat like this every day - sometimes lack of time / opportunity makes things harder. If I eat something else mid-morning e.g. cake I don;t fancy fruit as well, and so miss out.

It's just a goal

FrayedKnot · 21/02/2008 18:41

Joan, are you related to the O'Farks of Limerick?

FrayedKnot · 21/02/2008 18:45

La la la, talking to myslef...

I've just remembered, I discovered the Blogs! Franny you have one! How did I miss it?

I only found it because Talk was down earlier and I was bored

dinny · 21/02/2008 18:46

thanks, FK, most inspiring!

FrannyandZooey · 21/02/2008 18:56

my blog is crap, sorry. I started it and then got bored

Joan if you didn't like the fried egg sandwich you must have done it wrong. I simply can't imagine any other possibility.

Dinny I have :

breakfast: cereal with dried fruit and at least 3 portions of fresh fruit. I am always hungry and can really cram it in at this time I buy a selection of really nice fruit so it is always appealing. Sometimes I get excited when I wake up thinking about all the lovely fruit [saddo revelation]
= 4 portions

lunch: I tend to be a bit dull but try to have at least one portion. Beans on toast is a good one for me. If you don't mind preparing something more than a sandwich at this time of day, chopped up veg with a dip, or a salad, or an avocado sandwich, or some veg soup, are all good alternatives.
= 1 or 2 portions

dinner: either a veg and pulse based meal or have lots of veg on the side. We have things like veg stew with beans, veg curry with lentils, large salad with beans, pittas or wraps with salad and hummus, etc. Or if a meal like pizza or pasta, then serve BIG portions of several different veg with it. Often about one third to half the plate is veg served on the side.
= 4 or 5 portions

if you add in snacks like yogurt and fruit, dried fruit, fresh fruit etc then you can easily make it more like 15 than 10. HTH

oh plus have a look at the portion charts linked to in the OP
the cooked veg portions in particular may surprise you - 1 tbsp of peas is really not a lot to manage

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 21/02/2008 18:59

oh god I mean 3 tbsp of peas, sorry
but a tbsp is titchy, honest

I don't like fried eggs either FK, so it was never going to be a winner. I don't like chip buttys either, chips give me a headache.

It's fun being in disguise. I think I look pretty hot in chainmail too.
