Palpitations and chest pains. Terrified.

So this all started about two weeks ago out of nowhere I started experiencing palpitations, they were extremely consistent every ten mins (still are) I went to a&e as I was also experiencing chest tightness and they did an ecg full blood count, liver and heart bloods all of which were completely normal. I did start a new medication two weeks ago when this conveniently all started and had a follow up with doctor the next day after a&e who said no way is this medication causing my symptoms and I'm probably a bit anxious (I'm anxious because of my symptoms not before) - anyway I thought il leave it a bit then and it's just got worse I've developed heart burn now, really badly I've never had this! I'm burping (sorry Tmi) but every 5 mins and I keep feeling a burning sore sensation in my throat. My chest is still tight with little random shocks throughout the day and palpitations are still as bad as they were two weeks ago. Called doctor again today as I decided I'm going to stop the medication (it is one weekly but from my research it stays in system for exactly one week it's a high dose) so I told doctor I want to stop, doctor reiterated what other doctor told me 4 days ago that it is not the medication causing this and that if the palpitations and chest pain get worse to go a&e - I said I already went 4 days ago and he said yes but if it gets worse than it is now then go a&e so I said ok. I'm so scared actually terrified because I saw a rare side effect of this medication is ventricular tachycardia, from searching dr google it seems the symptoms from that condition only show when you are having a flare, in my case this is literally constant! Has anyone else experienced this? I'm really panicking over it and I'm so scared the medication has caused a condition that hasn't been seen on my results. I'm just worried :(

What is the medication for?

What is the medication for?

It's an anti fungal for a fungas issue I am experiencing back to back

I must admit that, in that case, I'd be tempted to stop taking it to see if the symptoms resolve. The timing does seem an odd coincidence. Of course, if you are still worried, you could phone 111.

emilyyyyloox · 31/03/2023 18:53

111 would just tell me to go a&e - I went four days ago and everything was perfectly normal which is why I believe it is the medication, I have an oximeter that I've been using as I've also been feeling a bit short of breath at times and my oxygen has been 98 most times too, I think I will skip the next dose and hope for the best, it's so scary

Sounds more like a stomach issue - hiatal hernias cause these symptoms and more. There is a great book called Hiatal Hernia Syndrome which explains it all. I'm reading it right now as I am also suffering.

Does that cause palpitation and chest tightness though? :/

Not a doctor and will say keep going with the investigations. But I get this. Heart palpitations and chest pains which shift about and are eased by burping. I often feel the need to burp constantly for an hour or more and can also feel very short of breath and light headed. Sometimes I feel like I can barely breathe at all when it's really bad.

In my case it is all down to reflux apparently - which might also explain the burning sensation that you are feeling. I take omeprazole and a bit of gaviscon at night and this really helps. I also avoid some known trigger foods such as tomatoes. I have been prescribed beta blockers which also help but I think more for how anxious it makes me feel than anything.

When I keep up with the omeprazole and avoid triggers I don't get the sensations at all. The acid triggered by reflux can enter your sinuses and lungs when you lie down at night and this is what causes my breathlessness. And the bubbling palpitation sensation can also be a reflux symptom. If you Google reflux and palpitations it explains it very clearly. I've had lots of investigations, heart monitors etc and although I do have some triple beats it's not significant enough to be causing my symptoms. It's very strange and not at all what I was expecting to be diagnosed with! Might be worth asking your gp about.

Yes it does. I'll send a pic of the bit in the book that explains it.

LapinR0se · 31/03/2023 19:29

whats the medication?

Titsywoo · 31/03/2023 19:30

Also agree it can be caused by reflux. The stomach and heart are so close to each other.

Sorry I see you answered that earlier. I think your symptoms are being caused by the meds and are uncomfortable but not dangerous

HopelesslyHopeful87 · 31/03/2023 19:32

Is the fungal medicine terbinafine?

Mog09 · 31/03/2023 19:32

What medication is it? A family member took an anti fungal antibiotic and it altered their taste causing terrible heartburn and reflux/chest pain. Apparently a known side effect and they still suffer years later.

It's fluconazole

I did see something about vagus nerve! I've never had anything like this before though so it's super random :/

Can you get a Kardia 1 lead ecg that links to your phone? I paid £100 for mine, and at least you can have the info to show the GP.

LapinR0se · 31/03/2023 19:55

I just checked the contraindications for fluconazole and NHS website says that rapid or irregular heartbeat is a serious side effect. Other websites say to call your doctor immediately if you experience rapid heartbeat on fluconazole as well.
I would call 111 and stop taking it immediately.

Yes I know this, this is what I have read but as explained I've been to a&e already, I went a few days ago and everything was normal, my heart rate is also normal on oximeter at home and was normal in hospital, ecg was also normal sinus rhythm

Also mentioned this to the doctor but they said because ecg was normal and my heart rate is not quick it's not that, although it is giving me a lot of anxiety

It’s possible that all the symptoms are being caused by anxiety

I just can't wrap my head around how all of this is anxiety it's so consistent and never goes

My initial thought was anxiety too.

I have very similar symptoms with my tummy - when it flares up I worry (palps get worse and I burp more). It's a bloody vicious circle of shit, somethings wrong with my heart and my tummy is playing up!

Ask your GP for the heart monitor referral just for reassurance and mention acid reflux - this may be easily treated and impact the amount of palps you have.

Lots of luck - I know how awful they are x

Titsywoo · 31/03/2023 20:58

I really think it is reflux/stomach issues. I have a lot of problems with this and it definitely gives a feeling like anxiety - there is a lot of crossover. I've suffered with acid indigestion etc on and off for 25 years and anxiety always comes with it.

LIZS · 31/03/2023 21:08

Anxiety can cause symptoms such as palpitations, reflux, tension etc.It can be self fulfilling as the more the symptoms occur the more anxious you become. Are you being treated for it? Have you seen a Gp to assess the results of your A and E tests and advise you. If you believe it might be the meds make an appointment to review the prescription,

ClaraBourne · 31/03/2023 21:09

I have been having similar symptoms and was wondering what on earth it was. I do have anxiety though and am on Setraline (last few days) and Omneprazole. I get a heavy feeling in my chest and palpitations which could be caused by the anxiety/Setraline. But, I am also burping a fair bit. I go into a cyle then of anxiety and have to actively take long slow breaths to calm myself down.
