Palpitations and chest pains. Terrified.

So this all started about two weeks ago out of nowhere I started experiencing palpitations, they were extremely consistent every ten mins (still are) I went to a&e as I was also experiencing chest tightness and they did an ecg full blood count, liver and heart bloods all of which were completely normal. I did start a new medication two weeks ago when this conveniently all started and had a follow up with doctor the next day after a&e who said no way is this medication causing my symptoms and I'm probably a bit anxious (I'm anxious because of my symptoms not before) - anyway I thought il leave it a bit then and it's just got worse I've developed heart burn now, really badly I've never had this! I'm burping (sorry Tmi) but every 5 mins and I keep feeling a burning sore sensation in my throat. My chest is still tight with little random shocks throughout the day and palpitations are still as bad as they were two weeks ago. Called doctor again today as I decided I'm going to stop the medication (it is one weekly but from my research it stays in system for exactly one week it's a high dose) so I told doctor I want to stop, doctor reiterated what other doctor told me 4 days ago that it is not the medication causing this and that if the palpitations and chest pain get worse to go a&e - I said I already went 4 days ago and he said yes but if it gets worse than it is now then go a&e so I said ok. I'm so scared actually terrified because I saw a rare side effect of this medication is ventricular tachycardia, from searching dr google it seems the symptoms from that condition only show when you are having a flare, in my case this is literally constant! Has anyone else experienced this? I'm really panicking over it and I'm so scared the medication has caused a condition that hasn't been seen on my results. I'm just worried :(

Anxiety can cause symptoms such as palpitations, reflux, tension etc.It can be self fulfilling as the more the symptoms occur the more anxious you become. Are you being treated for it? Have you seen a Gp to assess the results of your A and E tests and advise you. If you believe it might be the meds make an appointment to review the prescription,

Yes when doctor called the day after a&e they said all the results took were completely normal - spoke to doctor today to say I do not want to take the medication anymore as I do believe it could be contributing to the symptoms at the least! They said I can stop if that is what I want to do

I have been having similar symptoms and was wondering what on earth it was. I do have anxiety though and am on Setraline (last few days) and Omneprazole. I get a heavy feeling in my chest and palpitations which could be caused by the anxiety/Setraline. But, I am also burping a fair bit. I go into a cyle then of anxiety and have to actively take long slow breaths to calm myself down.

It's so strange, never had anything like it before

My initial thought was anxiety too.

I have very similar symptoms with my tummy - when it flares up I worry (palps get worse and I burp more). It's a bloody vicious circle of shit, somethings wrong with my heart and my tummy is playing up!

Ask your GP for the heart monitor referral just for reassurance and mention acid reflux - this may be easily treated and impact the amount of palps you have.

Lots of luck - I know how awful they are x

Thank you, thing is I have already had every heart investigation going. Back in 2020 I started getting dizzy all the time so I've had an echo, heart monitor for 24 hours etc it turned out to be a vestibular issue, but from what I know my heart is ok! It's just recent events that is scaring the life out of me

Woke up with a really sore chest, sore ribs and my upper back is also really hurting, I feel like I've done a workout and I haven't...
Something is just telling me something is not right and I don't want to keep going a&e as I know I'm a hypochondriac at times but honestly this just feels odd, also woke up with pounding palpitations again

There's no way I'd continue taking that medication if I were in your shoes, no matter what the doctor's say. They don't know everything and certainly aren't in your body to feel what you feel.

Is the medicine supposed to be keeping you alive? If it wouldn't hurt to stop and start, I'd stop taking it for a while and see if the symptoms subside/go away. Then start again if I feel it's safe to continue or speak to the doctor to change medication. It's your life so I wouldn't put it in someone else's hands - doctor or not - and become a lesson for "listen to your gut" when it's too late.

I completely agree, it's all too convenient for when it first started, I might go a&e again if it gets worse tbh, It feels like I have muscle pain all over my chest and upper back and my ribs are sore which resonates with costochondritis which I have actually had before but I had that after a virus! I have not been sick recently, I'm taking ibuprofen for the pain but as I have already been a&e for this I just don't want to go again, it's becoming my second home!

You know o2 sats of 98 are absolutely fine don't you? You can stop worrying about that aspect...and stop checking!
By all means stop the meds if they are disagreeing with you and see if the symptoms subside but if you have had such an extensive work up as you have, it is really really unlikely anything is really wrong :)

MegIsWhite · 01/04/2023 17:45

In your shoes, I wouldn't go to a and e for now as you've been 4 days ago and had things checked. I'd see if stopping the medication helps. If it doesn't, then I'd go. But you wouldn't be wrong going to see if they can do more tests since you're being told it can't be the medication. It has to be something then and I don't agree that it's anxiety. As you said, being anxious came after the symptoms, not before. It may heighten it but not to the extent you've described unless you have Anxiety disorder.

I've been taking ibuprofen today and it has definitely helped with the pain side of things however palpitations still very much there so hoping they subside, I'm due the next dose tomorrow which obviously I will not take, hope to see a difference

Yes I do :) that's why I'm trying not to panic, all my obs are very normal which makes me think it is the medication or I am just exerting my symptoms by worrying

I hope you do. 💐 Good to know the pain is subsiding. Happy to receive more update afterwards if you feel up to it.

If you've got a stats monitor, then I assume your HR has also been normal, despite the feelings you may have palpitations? What's the risk of not completing the course of antifungals? I wouldn't just arbitrarily stop them, I'd be making a GO appointment before the next dose, and an in person one. You seem pretty anxious (understandable) but I'd still rather I talked it over before deciding to stop a required treatement

I've already spoken to GP about it, basically I have constant vaginal thrush, I've had it 8 times since January, awful so GP said 6 month treatment should do the job, they told me I could do it with pessaries, one every few days for a week and see if that helps, also said I shouldn't have started treatment without a second swab so Monday I need to go in and do a swab for thrush again, bit of a mess but honestly I don't want to take the medication anymore, whether it is causing my symptoms or not there is other ways I can treat this and medication just scares me especially when there is other options for me

How old are you?

TheShellBeach · 02/04/2023 00:12

You posted about this a few days ago and everyone agreed it was health anxiety

TheShellBeach · 02/04/2023 00:16

Ibuprofen isn't recommended when you have reflux.

Blinky21 · 02/04/2023 06:34

GERD maybe, it can cause palpitations by stimulating the vagus nerve

Your fixation on this medication, which sounds as if you have taken fir a while, does sound lime anxiety. Do ask about that tomorrow. When you get an attack have you tried relaxation techniques and mindfulness to see if it helps?

Morph22010 · 02/04/2023 21:25

I had similar symptoms few weeks ago, doc tested me for a load of stuff and I’ve got h pylori bug. Apparently lots of ppl have it with no issues but it can become active and it causes acid

The symptoms have gone. The chest tightness, stomach pain, diarrohea has gone and the palpitations still there but really lessened. Not sure if this anxiety or the medication that has now been stopped but I am feeling much better.

I get all these symptoms and I thought they were palpitations but I'm pretty sure now that it's to do with Gastro Oesophageal Reflux Disease.

It's acid coming up from your stomach and into your oesophagus which can cause chest pain, throat soreness, heartburn etc. I also get weird fluttery feelings but I know it's not my heart now (had tests done) but feels very similar.

Perhaps the new medication has irritated your stomach?

Potentially, but all the symptoms have gone. Even the palpitations have gone now, so I do now think it was the medication

Great news! Perhaps they can change the medication for you.
