Night Sweats. Would you push for further investigations?

I’m 34 years old. Since having a chest infection back in January I’ve been having night sweats every night. I wake up and my pyjama top would be soaked I’d have to change it. After a couple of months of this I went to the GP. No other symptoms what so ever. Had lots of bloods done and all came back normal so the GP wasn’t concerned. Funnily enough not long after I had the bloods taken the night sweats stopped for a couple of weeks. But now they have started again. Would you call the Gp back and ask for further investigations or leave it as nothing to worry about like the GP is doing ?
I’ve got the Marina coil in and have done for 3.5 years so I really don’t think it’s that.

I'd push for further tests.

My hideous night sweats turned out to be a symptom of a rare benign tumour growing inside my heart. They stopped immediately after surgery.

garlictwist · 25/03/2023 05:42

Wow @Spartak, how were you diagnosed? I have night sweats although not every night and have no idea why. It's so hard to see a doctor at the mo I'm not sure I can face the struggle.

Oh my gosh!! Talk about putting the fear of life into me lol
did you have any other symptoms ?? Chest pains or anything?
do you mind sharing your route to diagnosis?

Tell me about it. I feel the same like oh I’ve had blood tests GP isn’t worried so just leave it lol

@Mumma2Ro I'm sure Spartak is the exception not the rule. But yes definitely pursue gp again. Your definitely not just too hot in bed? I get the occasionally but I have 12 years on you so assume it's hormonal.

Lordofthebutterfloofs · 25/03/2023 06:25

Sometimes I get this op, it's because I'm too cold in bed. I think my body is trying to warm me up so I get very sweaty if that makes sense.

As soon as I add an extra layer, at night the sweating stops.

It could be as simple as that.

TubbsTattysyrup · 25/03/2023 08:53

Yes I’d push. I had some night sweats leading up to a heart attack!

musingsinmidlife · 25/03/2023 13:22

I developed night sweats from drinking diet coke! I also get night sweats if I drink alcohol. No idea why but keep a diary and see if there are connections between what you eat and drink and your night sweats.

lotsofdogshere · 25/03/2023 13:26

Go back to your doctor. Night sweats like you describe are red flag and need investigating

changedmynam · 25/03/2023 16:05

I'd ask for more tests.

I currently have a serious mass on my adrenal gland.

Its extremely rare, and as such there are only few hospitals in the whole of England that can perform the surgery to fix it.

I have no real symptoms at all, but one of the sypmtoms that they ask about (but I dont have) is night sweats.

I'll be off to St James in Leeds, where interestingly they perfomed the same surgery just last week on BBc saving lives in Leeds

HipHipWhoRay · 25/03/2023 16:08

TB, sarcoidosis, lymphoma can all present with night sweats. You need a chest X-ray to start with and someone to examine you to see if any lymph nodes palpable. There are many benign causes but you need investigation

It was all a bit of a whirlwind. Right at the start of the first lockdown, I'd been feeling tired all the time. Then I got Covid and didn't really get better.

GP ran blood tests which came back with random results which didn't make sense, and I had low blood pressure with a high heart rate.

A further blood test indicated a high risk of blood clots, so they sent me to hospital as a day case. Chest x-ray showed a shadow on my lungs so I had to go back the following day for a CT scan.

Radiographer noticed that my heart was blocked, so I had an emergency echo, and was transferred to a larger hospital in the evening. Open heart surgery 36 hours later to get the little bugger out.

The night sweats stopped straight away though 😀

What I had was really rare, I had a higher chance of becoming a millionaire on the lottery, but the experience has taught me to listen more to my body and push for investigations when something isn't right.

Oh wow that’s interesting. Was it when you had Diet Coke in the evening or at any point in the day??

Wow what a story! So pleased you’re okay now.
thank you for the advice. I will be calling the GP again on Monday. I’m so scared now

well i slept in my winter pyjamas last night after what you said. They are thicker, with long sleeves. And I didn’t sweat! I couldn’t believe it. I wonder if it’s just a coincidence so shall see what happens tonight

Glad to hear it 😊

I'm 37 this year and it's been like this since I had my second DC at 30.

I have also recently noticed what I think is a sharp drop in estrogen levels.

I need to get in for a blood test and I suspect I would find myself firmly in peri menopause.

What makes you think you’ve had a sharp drop in estrogen?
I had blood tests for pre menopausal but nothing came up. Dr said it doesn’t always show up on bloods

Sorry if this makes me sound odd, but I can feel my hormones fluctuating. I know when I've had a fresh batch and I know when they feel low.

That started in pregnancy too.

This happens to me if I dont wrap up properly with socks and extra bedspread.

Very odd

Crikey! I sleep naked with the window open and only a bit of duvet over me and still wake up in a sweaty mess every morning. I've bought a silk pillow case and a big fan but I thought it was just me!

Unfortunately, I really can't see my gp giving a shit if I wait the weeks it takes to get an appointment.
