Night Sweats. Would you push for further investigations?

I’m 34 years old. Since having a chest infection back in January I’ve been having night sweats every night. I wake up and my pyjama top would be soaked I’d have to change it. After a couple of months of this I went to the GP. No other symptoms what so ever. Had lots of bloods done and all came back normal so the GP wasn’t concerned. Funnily enough not long after I had the bloods taken the night sweats stopped for a couple of weeks. But now they have started again. Would you call the Gp back and ask for further investigations or leave it as nothing to worry about like the GP is doing ?
I’ve got the Marina coil in and have done for 3.5 years so I really don’t think it’s that.

Crikey! I sleep naked with the window open and only a bit of duvet over me and still wake up in a sweaty mess every morning. I've bought a silk pillow case and a big fan but I thought it was just me!

Unfortunately, I really can't see my gp giving a shit if I wait the weeks it takes to get an appointment.

haha! Read our posts above, maybe you’re sweating cos you’re cold!?

I had night sweats for years. GP completely unhelpful.

Then I discovered I had infertility. NHS completely useless, told me all tests said I was fine.

Then I went to a private fertility doctor overseas who did some blood tests the NHS deny are useful. He diagnosed an infection, prescribed a shit load of high strength antibiotics, and low and behold the night sweats stopped and never returned.

I’m not a big fan of the NHS. If it didn’t exist I’d have hired a private doctor much earlier, perhaps in time to save my fertility 😔

mrssanchez · 26/03/2023 22:39

Pretty sure it's not that, but thanks. If I forget to open the window or fall asleep with clothes, it's much worse and I have to change the bed completely!

Fromwetome · 26/03/2023 22:54

Op do you take an SSRI like citalopram or have Endometriosis? Does it happen all night or one big sweat and then you are okay for the rest of the night?

I have horrendous night sweats too but both of those things above can cause them so GP won't investigate further. I can sleep with a window open in winter, my room can be under 10 degrees and I still soak my pj's. They happen once a night at 3am and then I don't sweat for the rest of the night. I really don't get it.

Fromwetome · 26/03/2023 22:56

@Raineth so sorry to hear that, I lost my fertility also because of the NHS. I need to have a hysterectomy. Endometriosis destroyed my ovaries.

I also have extremely bad night sweats. What was the infection of if you don't mind sharing? What exactly was being treated?

Husbands nightsweats turned out to be cancer.
Go back to GP and insist on more test

I approached my gp about night sweats but it's practically impossible to get a go to take anything seriously after covid

He had blood cancer. Was sleeping all the time, lost load of weight and in the hospital and had load of bruises. Still took a year and the GP was testing for gluten intolerance when they found it.
It's quite rare though. But please go and see GP and ask for further tests

Lordofthebutterfloofs · 27/03/2023 10:12

@Mumma2Ro how did night 2 go?

If you are looking to exclude blood cancer, the test you need is a full blood count.

I'd be quite surprised if this wasn't included whenever a doctor commissions blood tests as it's cheap, quick, simple, widely used and gives info relevant to a whole host of conditions

Fladdermus · 27/03/2023 11:44

I had this. GP wasn't that interested. Turns out I had sleep apnea and haven't had night sweats since starting treatment. (20 years between first complaining to GP and actually getting diagnosed)

LatteOneShotplease · 27/03/2023 11:53

I am sure I read somewhere that low B12 can cause night sweats.

Are you likely through diet (vegetarian/vegan/not much green....) to have low B12, or have any possibility of pernicious anemia, preventing absorption (although they both need test, so good luck with that....)?

Hi @Raineth i would also be interested to know what the infection was, if you’re happy to share?

Mumma2Ro · 05/09/2023 22:17

Yes they did stop! Very bizarre. I never got to the bottom of it
