Fungal toe nail

Has anyone successfully cleared fungal toe nails without medication? I've tried everything but it seems nothing works. The tablets made me very such so had to stop those. Currently, I'm filing them as much as possible and dabbing with Miltons on a daily basis. My next thought I'd to have them removed or at least my big toe nail which is a complete mess!

Apple cider vinegar, warm water and baking powder.
Honestly it worked wonders!

flowerycurtain · 04/04/2023 22:06

@Cherryblossomtreesforever how long did you put it on for?

It took a while to work to be fair.
I started to seeing improvements straight away, but it was a good 3 months before it cleared completely (that was soaking it twice a day - morning and night for about 20 minutes).

mikado1 · 05/04/2023 10:45

Probably sounds bad but 20 mins night and morning?!? I don't think I'd manage that..

I have 3 nails affected and have had for a long time. I saw my diabetic nurse this week and she suggested putting Vicks on it. Another nurse has previously suggested it, but I have never tried it.

Isn't nail removal an incredibly painful operation? Shock

Nails don't have any nerves but if you are totally removing a toenail (where it is attached to skin) , you numb up the whole toe with local anaesthetic first.

mikado1 · 14/04/2023 06:59

I bought those heavy duty clippers yesterday. The ones that look like secateurs 😳 Between those and electric file, nails look much better. Think will try the emuaid next. Vicks did nothing for me except soften the nails.

barbrahunter · 14/04/2023 07:49

I've thrown away a pair of closed-in shoes I've had for a couple of years now, hoping that this helps. Feels very wasteful but I really want to avoid constantly re-infecting myself.

mikado1 · 14/04/2023 07:58

Wouldn't you just wear them with socks on?

Following for reference

Wondering what people do while they are treating nails over the long term. The top third of each big toenail seems to have gone white underneath and I think it is fungal. The nails are still smooth and feel healthy enough.

I want to be able to use gel polish on my feet though- it is possible to do this and treat at the same time? It’s sandals weather already 🙁 thanks!

Willmafrockfit · 20/05/2023 10:56

i just tried to book a podiatrist to take a look but she was grumpy on the phone, sighing,
so i will try someone else.

Nail polish makes it worse generally. If you get a breathable one it is better. I have an Orly one.

If you're using Polish make sure to take it off each night. I wouldn't be doing gel or shellac..I think you can get antifungal polish..

PeriwinkleForever · 21/05/2023 08:26

Thank you @WeCome1 and @mikado1 - the thing I don’t understand is that if I buy special breathable nail polish, is it ok to use it repeatedly or would I be potentially reinfecting myself?

i need something which will get me through the whole summer of wearing sandals most days…. Thank you.

Hm. I don’t feel like you’ll reinfect yourself somehow. But it sounds faffy having to put it on every day and it might hinder the treatment a bit. I know it’s breathable but I think it won’t be as breathable as nothing.

I might be inclined to wear a plaster when I go out except for special occasions.

Most of the fungal nails I see are NOT fungal. They are damaged nail beds which make the nails look fungal when they are not.
You need to get some nail samples to the lab to be tested.
If you have had a course of terbinafine tablets and there is no healthy nail growth at the base of your nails after three months then it is likely they are not fungal just damaged. Damaged nail beds cannot be fixed.
They are caused by aying sports, poor footwear, trauma and you are stuck with them.
If they are fungal then you need to file them down heavily with a metal file (amazon) a diamond deb file to make the porous and apply vicks vapo rub daily. The ingredients in vicks will kill the fungal infection.
I can usually tell if they are fungal from a photo.

Willmafrockfit · 21/05/2023 09:12

yes when i saw the nurse about my toe nails she gave me a bag and form to collect a sample,
i never did.

What do you mean by "they can't be fixed"? Do you mean the nail will always look horrible forever or that you just have to wait for it to grow out?

Gemstonebeach · 21/05/2023 09:17

I removed as much of the nail as I could, on my middle toe this was almost the whole nail and then part of the side of my big toe. I found the fungal part lifted quite easily. Persevering with removing the infected nail over and over got rid of mine, but I didn't try the tablets.

mikado1 · 25/05/2023 16:46

I have been using Nailoc the last two weeks and have noticed a difference. When clipping last night a massive chunk of big toenail came away so I pulled it away...nail bed is now exposed on one whole side but bottom part which is quite blackish is still there... sorry this thread could do with a trigger warning but I presume all on here understand! The electric file seems to be more effective on the big toenail as not as thick and flatter perhaps.

KillingMeDeftly · 17/02/2023 12:57

Have you tried honey? My dad tried that when he had a similar infection on his toenail and it cleared up. I can't guarantee it will work for you but it might be worth a try!

Soak a cotton pad in honey and leave it on?

Mylifehasimploded · 04/06/2023 22:39

I used Vicks for around 3 weeks every day, and the fungal nail fell off, the new one is growing back fine. It definitely works.

niclw · 04/06/2023 23:16

That's interesting about Vicks.
