Fungal toe nail

Has anyone successfully cleared fungal toe nails without medication? I've tried everything but it seems nothing works. The tablets made me very such so had to stop those. Currently, I'm filing them as much as possible and dabbing with Miltons on a daily basis. My next thought I'd to have them removed or at least my big toe nail which is a complete mess!

DS is using Miaderma fungal nail pen, he's had to wait for the nails to grow out but the pen has worked much better than any of the paint on stuff we tried. It's also lasted a lot longer and is much easier to apply. You have to do it religiously though until it's completely gone.

I went to a podiatrist who snipped the whole affected part of the nails right off. He does laser but has given me a brush on treatment to try for 3 months first. I actually don't know why I'm telling you this as I have no idea if it's worked, it's too soon. I was just fascinated by the process!

Daktarin cream worked for me. Amazingly well.

Moomoo75 · 17/02/2023 20:02

I am v interested in this. I have it in both my big toes and then in 2 of the other toes. I have it years. My two big toe nails are black in colour. It's awful so embarrassing

Thewizardssleeve · 17/02/2023 20:05

i used this and it worked, it is natural ingredients (mostly tea tree) pinned it on for a good few weeks and it cleared up. hasn't come back either.

Well mine fell off after swimming in a radioactive lake in Hungary for 3 hours. The 2 fungal nails just peeled clean off when I was relaxing in a bath the next day.....

And I'd had them for years and tried everything.

Truly the nuclear option.

Ketchupwee · 17/02/2023 20:48

The only thing that has helped mine is putting Vicks on twice a day. It's finally growing out

GettingItOutThere · 17/02/2023 21:07

wash your shoes, spray them in lamisil, boil wash your socks. No point treating your toe and keeping the rubbish mushing in your shoes ;)

Try vicks or tea tree oil. If you want to try podiatrist wise, clearanail is none invasive and involves little holes in the nail, then spray with lamisil or a spray which they recccomend

Same. Cut back the manky bit as much as possible, file down any thickened bits, and apply daktarin to the nail and rub it into the bits around and behind the nail twice a day. Cleared it up as the nail grew - ie healthy growth.

thenightsky · 17/02/2023 21:22

Vicks turned my nail into a yellow soft mush. Worse than it was before.

8 months of terbinafine 3 years ago did nothing except make me feel ill. I'm trying Tiger Balm now.
Next stop a swim in the sea by Sellafield.

Cakemonger · 17/02/2023 21:33

I went to the podiatrist the other day with what I thought was a fungal infection - turned out it probably isn't but she mentioned that when it is fungal only Terbinafine works. You can get it in gel form. Probably best go to an expert to get it properly diagnosed though?

TwilightSilhouette · 17/02/2023 21:41

File it, file it and file it again. Keep filing away at it and apply the nail lacquers. You really need to file as much of it away as you can though.

mikado1 · 17/02/2023 21:43

Anyone recommend a rotating electrical file for proper filing to nail bed?

WombatChocolate · 17/02/2023 21:50

A specialist will take clippings of your nail and send them to a lab to get the issue diagnosed. There are different medications for different problems.

I had terrible nails for almost 20 years. They were thick, yellow and crumbly inside which smelt nasty. They didn’t grow in length, just thickness. Had tried lots of the things mentioned on here. In the end I had pulse treatment of itracinzole which means taking it for a week, then 3 weeks off. I had to do this for 6 months. I had several liver tests by blood test to check it wasn’t harming me.

After about 3 months you could see new nail slowly growing through and it was thinner and less yellow. There was a line where the new better nail had started growing. It took well over a year to fully grow out and the nails then grew in length normally. Perhaps 2 of the smaller nails were not perfectly cured and still a little thicker. However, the big toe nail which had been worst on both feet was fine. 3 years later, still okay. The itraconozole also cleared up some deep rooted fungal foot skin infection that they said was related to the nail infection. Ongoing thrush was also sorted and some sort of dermatitis in ears.

Terbinafine isn’t always the right answer. For some types of infection itraconozole is the one.

SwedishEdith · 17/02/2023 21:55

Can you just get the nail removed? Is that something a doctor could do and would it work?

My big toe has something I assume is this. It started to grow out but the top third of the nail still looked horrible when we went on holiday last year so I painted my nails. When I eventually removed the nail polish, the damage had started again at the bottom. I'm not posting a photo but does that sound like a fungal nail? I don't want one! And the tablets don't sound that good for you, hence wondering if you can cure it by just getting the nail removed.

Applesarenice · 17/02/2023 21:58

I cut/ filed it all away and it grew back healthy

This time last year I had a fungal infection on my big toe nail. I investigated laser treatment and it was going to take over a year and cost more than 1k.
Then I saw a lady who used to be a beautician but now dealt with feet (can't imagine anyone wanting to work with feet!!) And she did a treatment called curanail (iirc) . She drilled tiny holes (not painful, holes not visible) in my nail and I had to treat with lamisil every day. I saw her every 4-6 weeks and It cleared up completely in about 7 months.

BG2015 · 18/02/2023 05:59

I had chemo for breast cancer and thought it might kill off my nail fungal but it's still there! It doesn't seem as bad though and looks like it's growing out.

Obviously chemo is a bit drastic a solution Confused

Moorlander · 18/02/2023 06:12

I have been struggling for years with fungal nails, all of my toenails are affected. I'm seeing some success using a mixture of tea tree and oregano oil painted on twice a day combined with occasional applications of hydrogen peroxide (from pharmacy). I read about hydrogen peroxide online, I just apply with a cotton bud once or twice a week and it seems to make the nails more porous so they absorb the oils more deeply. I am careful just to put on the nail, not the skin and have had no irritation or anything. I can now see a line where healthy nail is growing through on most of my nails which is encouraging!

2023usernameNew · 18/02/2023 06:22

@MissConductUS , did you applied it in its own or diluted una carrier oil?

ive used tea tree oil in the past on its own and made the skin on my toe very itchy.
