I’ve started today — and only managed one out of the three breakfast muffins (ate two but one came straight back up!) Anyone else fallen at the first hurdle??

ExcusesExcuses · 05/02/2023 09:41

started last week but manages to eat all 3, just. I definitely felt like they would come back up. the lunch ones are much better.. And there's only two!

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 05/02/2023 09:50

Glad to hear the lunch muffins are less revolting!
How’re you getting on with it otherwise?

nancyglancy · 05/02/2023 09:53

I just looked and you can't start until June!

ExcusesExcuses · 05/02/2023 09:59

Well I have the blood.sugar sensor which has been interesting. Haven't done all the challenges though. Just eating normally at this stage so I can see the effects. Can't wait for the results

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 05/02/2023 10:06

It’s the blood sugar sensor I’m most
interested in. I’d love to know, for example, whether porridge is a good choice for me, or if (as I suspect),
it causes a big spike.

Big spike for me

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 05/02/2023 21:16

Have you had any hypos, @ExcusesExcuses ? I was feeling a bit weird this evening so scanned my Libre and found my blood glucose was 3.8.

OP posts:
ExcusesExcuses · 05/02/2023 21:20

nope.. a couple.of times I've almost been at 4. but just become really hungry at that point

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 05/02/2023 21:28

Hmm. Wonder what’s going on…

ChocChipOwl · 06/02/2023 16:27

My kit has been sent today - Dan you tell me exactly how it works op? What to expect? All I know for sure right now is that it appears to be costing a fortune Grin

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 06/02/2023 21:31

I’m only just getting to grips with it myself, @ChocChipOwl - sorry!

Butternut squash risotto has just sent my blood sugar crazy. It’s fascinating to see this in real time and rather addictive.

picklemewalnuts · 06/02/2023 21:34

Can you explain briefly what it is? Is it expensive?

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 06/02/2023 22:22

Essentially, it’s a programme that looks at how your body responds to certain types of food, and gives you advice on which foods, or food combinations, are best for your particular make-up.
You send them blood and poo samples, which they analyse to get a picture of how your body processes fat, and which helpful bacteria you do or don’t have in your gut.
You wear a blood glucose monitor for two weeks so you can see in real time the effect your meals, exercise and sleep have on your blood sugar levels.
I can’t remember exactly how much I paid, as I coughed up a while back - £200-ish, which includes the cost of the glucose monitor.
I’m only on day 3 and I’m already realising I need to have a chat with my GP, as my blood sugar is all over the place.

picklemewalnuts · 07/02/2023 07:05

Ooh interesting, thank you.

picklemewalnuts · 07/02/2023 07:51

I've just looked. The information isn't as clear as all that...

OldTrot · 07/02/2023 08:56

@picklemewalnuts I 'think' mine is arriving today - and I signed up some months ago. Way back last year

It is expensive. I had to chat with them yesterday to refresh my memory as all these chunks of 49.99 were coming out of my account and I'd lost track of what was what!

To expand on what @SomethingNastyInTheBallPool said, the cost is 299.99 for the monitor and then a membership on top of that each month. It is not cheap!

However it is the most cutting edge way of discovering how you react to foods / blood sugar levels and gut health

I think there are ways of doing it cheaper too - a sort of diy way

DoormatBob · 07/02/2023 09:06

I have just read Tim Spector's book and was recently diagnosed as Prediabetic. I think this approach makes a lot of sense.

I'm currently going zero carb for 2-3 weeks to get my blood sugar down. I plan to do a similar DIY test using a finger prick blood glucose monitor.

I will check levels 30 minutes after food (will check if that's the expected peak time) and record with a note of the meal. This will allow me to test my reaction to different foods.

QuizteamAguillera · 07/02/2023 09:08

I was invited back in Dec but it’s just too expensive for me at the moment sadly.

picklemewalnuts · 07/02/2023 09:34

That makes sense.

Thanks for the clarification about the costs- it's not at all clear on the site! I thought about joining for a month.

I'll mull a bit longer. The diy option would be interesting. Perhaps make breakfast the meal where you test your reaction. Maybe porridge one day, bread the next.

But we already know don't we, that low carb is better for your bloods... the problem is keeping it up.

I'm thinking of doing a fast day with just fats- bulletproof coffee, essentially. See how I feel.

MaverickSnoopy · 07/02/2023 09:51

I am ecstatic to see a thread on this. I am starting tomorrow and put my sensor on this morning.

I thought the information online was minimal but the onboarding is great with so much information. I had however read a newspaper article prior to signing up, which helped inform my decision.

It cost £250 for the tests, although website says £299.99. Then you choose the length of your subscription and the price varies accordingly. It's all out of my budget really so I think I signed up for 4 months, but we'll see how it goes. I had to make it a priority though as I have had gastritis for over year and I just know my gut is totally off balance. They don't promise to fix conditions but it can reset your gut, so I figure it's worth trying at least. Aside from anything else I want to loose weight and feel less exhausted!

GenerationGame · 07/02/2023 10:00

Following! I should receive mine in April.

I’m fed up of not being able to lose weight and being uncomfortable in my gut. Lots of diabetes/heart issues in my family, particularly hitting the women around menopause, so I’m keen to see what my triggers are.

LadyGardenersQuestionTime · 07/02/2023 10:18

I was looking at this for Dh (gut problems) but found the information on costs etc very confusing, glad it's not just me. So there's an initial £250-ish payment; then £50 a month? What do you get for the monthly payment if the initial testing is 2weeks of blood sugar monitoring + a single poo and blood test?

OldTrot · 07/02/2023 11:14

They take the £299.99 (or whatever it bloody is!) in stages so I've paid 3 lots so far and my kit arrives today sometime

I think then I've signed up for 4 months on the subscription

I actually must properly check! I'll do this this afternoon.

It isn't cheap but it is in line with what these things all cost anyway but you can deffo do a bit cheaper

OldTrot · 07/02/2023 16:25

Ok so the sensor is in and I'm going to start tomorrow.

Now, I love a muffin but these ones look disgusting and not like my usual blueberry or chocolate!

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 07/02/2023 16:47

They’re unlike any muffin you’ve ever tasted 😁.
