I’ve started today — and only managed one out of the three breakfast muffins (ate two but one came straight back up!) Anyone else fallen at the first hurdle??

@Speedywallpaper I'm peri menopausal and very firmly in it at the age of 51! I've just looked up the book you recommend. Is it suitable for vegans? Well, I'm more plant based than vegan but close enough

One review says she recommends fish for vegetarians and eggs for vegans which puts me off a bit as most people know a veggie wouldn't eat fish etc!

I'm always looking for decent books though so you're getting on well with it are you?

Speedywallpaper · 10/02/2023 08:35

@OldTrot I'm pescatarian.

It's dairy and gluten-free but there are gluten free alternatives plus you can include beans, pulses and tofu as your protein. It's not written with vegans in mind but you could adapt it. Nuts and seeds are fine but absolutely no processed food or alcohol.

I think carbs are my big challenge, which is difficult as lower-carb is hard to do if you don't eat meat and poultry.

OldTrot · 10/02/2023 11:17

@Speedywallpaper thanks for that info, I'm going to take a look at it

OldTrot · 10/02/2023 11:20

Well, for breakfast I had ..

Full fat Greek yogurt - a few heaped tablespoons

Chopped apricot, banana and strawberry

Tablespoons of mixed seeds / flax seeds / few chopped raw cashews

Peppermint tea

Small glass of cherry kefir

Impact on blood sugar? Nothing at all, bar the slightest rise from 5 to 5.2.

Compared to yesterday when I had more or less the above in slightly smaller quantities, with porridge. That sent my blood sugar to 10 ish.

So I think what I can take from that is that porridge is doing 'something' to my levels and I'm not sure why as I thought it was good for stable blood sugars?

OldTrot · 10/02/2023 11:24

And that's quite interesting, thinking about it more! I've always thought of porridge as one of those foods that would be very good for you across the board. And the 'sugars' in a banana / apricots to be the culprits in raising levels.

But for me personally, the banana and fruit has next to no impact

How are others finding porridge?

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 10/02/2023 13:40

I spiked from 6 to over 9 after porridge yesterday. I think Prof Tim said porridge causes him to have big spikes but it’s not the same for everyone.

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 10/02/2023 13:48

Weirdly, I had less of a spike from this morning’s (seeded) toast and marmalade. Maybe the butter and seeds offset the flour and marmalade.

I've signed up for this but don't start until June. Can't wait - I find this sort of thing so interesting.

What sort of things do the challenges involve?

Popcornpirate · 10/02/2023 15:14

I started with challenges today. Muffins a little like eating cardboard, blood test a bit messy though. Will be really interesting to see the results.

OldTrot · 10/02/2023 17:20

I had quinoa, salad, hummus and mozzarella for lunch with a few nuts. Again, no spike.

Just eaten a veg stir fry with tofu so will see what that does!

OldTrot · 10/02/2023 17:21

@schmalex I'll look some up and copy and paste for you later!

They're sort of like .. eat porridge on day one. Eat porridge with peanut butter on day 2 and compare.

You get to choose the food groups wtf

OldTrot · 10/02/2023 17:35

Err btw not wtf!

My phone hates me 😀

Haha! Thanks, sounds interesting! Can't believe I have to wait until June.

LulooLemon · 10/02/2023 19:05

Tested a chocolate bar today and my CGM went crazy. ☹️

OldTrot · 10/02/2023 19:07

@schmalex that is a very long wait. Kind you, I waited months too now I think about it. Can't quite remember when i ordered now - maybe end of November last year?

OldTrot · 10/02/2023 19:56

@LulooLemon what did it go from and to?

LulooLemon · 10/02/2023 20:58

@OldTrot

Started at 5.2

Ate chocolate

Was 7.9 within 15 minutes

Then an hour later it had dipped to 3.6 giving me a red warning 😲

I immediately ate some protein and salad, but stayed at 3.6 until 20 minutes later I was back in the green at 4.1

I feel it was teaching me a lesson that chocolate bars are not my friend. 😬🤣

LulooLemon · 11/02/2023 08:45

I'm testing orange juice now after a night fast.

OldTrot · 11/02/2023 10:36

How did the orange juice go?

OldTrot · 11/02/2023 10:37

I've found so far that my average glucose across the 3 days or so I've been using the sensor is 6.

Not sure if this is ok or not?

LulooLemon · 11/02/2023 12:25

@OldTrot Orange juice was similar to the chocolate, but the dip that followed the high didn't fall into the red zone. I would like to test it again tomorrow as part of a breakfast that has fibre and protein. I have a feeling the result will be more favourable.

This is so interesting. I'm (weirdly) enjoying being the subject of a science experiment. 😜

I would like to know this too.

OldTrot · 11/02/2023 12:35

Now, I quite fancy a hot chocolate with cream and a piece of cake:

I think I know already what that would do to the monitor (and err me of course!)

As a snack I had some quorn roasted fillets, some slices of tomato and a few mixed nuts. I'm pretty sure already that that won't cause a spike

But what happens if you have a cheese course first?
Or after?
Now that would be interesting!!!!
Eat the carbtastic today alone.
Tomorrow eat high protein food beforehand
The Day after eat high protein straight!!

LulooLemon · 11/02/2023 12:38

Sounds like the kind of snack the good folk from Zoe would approve of. 😉
