I’ve started today — and only managed one out of the three breakfast muffins (ate two but one came straight back up!) Anyone else fallen at the first hurdle??

@OldTrot

Started at 5.2

Ate chocolate

Was 7.9 within 15 minutes

Then an hour later it had dipped to 3.6 giving me a red warning 😲

I immediately ate some protein and salad, but stayed at 3.6 until 20 minutes later I was back in the green at 4.1

I feel it was teaching me a lesson that chocolate bars are not my friend. 😬🤣

Would be interesting to see the impact if you ate the chocolate around the same time you ate a snack babybel (or other cheese) or a some snack salami sticks..... would it be better? Would it be much much better or still BAD!!!?

How much protein would be needed to ease the sugar spike / slump.....

Following with interest, though it is a too costly programme for me.

@hoochyhag Thanks. And what a brilliant name. 😃

Doliveira · 11/02/2023 12:59

I’ve been testing my fasting glucose levels and they vary from 5.7 to 6.4 so far, so I guess I need to ideally bring that down. I’m very interested to read this thread and guess I better think about testing after eating, as well as fasting levels. I’ve started taking berberine,as I’ve heard it’s a good all round supplement to take, plus really helps glucose levels.

LulooLemon · 11/02/2023 12:59

@MindfulBear You're right. I need to somehow force myself to eat another bar of chocolate for the sake of science... sigh

NeedNwJeans · 11/02/2023 13:11

I started mine 3 weeks ago exactly, and got my personalised results late last night (about 2 weeks earlier than predicted)! The breakfast muffins were disgusting, I really struggled to eat them in 15mins. First 2 I just about managed and the third one was difficult. I thought the lunch muffins were the same, just 2 of them so it was easier.

I'm checking my personalised results now, they are interesting as my blood sugar was fine but apparently blood fat not as good! and gut health needs improving, although I eat relatively healthy - maybe it explains why I need to lose weight 😂

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 11/02/2023 15:30

Exciting that you got your results so quickly, @NeedNwJeans . Gives me hope, as I feel as if I’m flying blind at the moment.

If there’s one think @OldTrot and I have learned from the thread she started about blood sugar levels, it’s that the levels recommended for people with diabetes aren’t applicable to people without.

How do they report the blood fat numbers, what statistics do they give you? Is it just a graphic like this?

DH's cholesterol test results were a challenge to interpret but at least more than just one single number (NHS wellness check results)... just wondering what Zoe tells you about fat in the blood.

NeedNwJeans · 11/02/2023 20:28

@lljkk there's 3 graphs, that's one of them. Also comparison to your age & sex, and graph comparison to 6 hour blood fat rise.

lljkk · 11/02/2023 20:58

They don't give you the HDL or LDL or triglyceride numbers?

NeedNwJeans · 11/02/2023 21:27

No

MaverickSnoopy · 12/02/2023 12:28

I too got a huge spike from porridge but I had banana, peanut butter and a tsp of maple syrup with it. I had avocado and poached eggs on toast and hardly had any spike, also much fuller for longer so I'm going to try more savoury breakfasts.

I thought I should try out a Chinese takeaway and wine last night, you know, for science and discovered that my spike was less than HALF of what my porridge was!!!!! DH says for a fair experiment we should try Chinese and wine for lunch 🤔 but I've told him it's roast today!

I've seen you can get a blood sugar sense for about £60 with the app for 2 weeks, so I'm going to get that for DH who I think could have blood sugar issues (fatigued a lot and irritable). You can pay extra and get a similar course to the Zoe one, but minus the gut health test (which for me is the best bit).

OldTrot · 12/02/2023 16:42

In the name of science, I ate a handful of fruit gums and some cookies at 11pm last night (do feel free to judge me! I sometimes eat like a teenager with the munchies HmmBlush) Oh and a dairylea dunker.

I went up to 12.5! And then, in the night (woke up to have a wee and tested) I was in the red at 2.9! Woke this morning to 2.9 as well

So I think I can take from that that fruit gums and cookies are probably not a great idea for me. Although I don't need a sensor on my arm to work that one out

So today I've been sensible

Sourdough with shitake mushrooms, taleggio cheese, red onion and cherry tomatoes

Bowl of cherries

Tablespoon of peanut butter with a pink lady apple

Blood sugar has been relatively stable at 5. Something for the day apart from a little dip before my snack but I was hungry and knew it.

wheresmyshoe · 12/02/2023 17:02

I'm ridiculously squeamish about blood tests. Is it just a finger prick drop or like the covid study where you have to squeeze a tube of blood out?

OldTrot · 12/02/2023 17:04

@wheresmyshoe you just have to cover a square on a piece of card so no tubes or anything. For me, it was about 4 drops or so

wheresmyshoe · 12/02/2023 17:05

Thank you @OldTrot much appreciated.

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 12/02/2023 17:13

Your food today sounds lovely, @OldTrot . If I had late-night cookies and fruit gums, you’d have to peel me off the ceiling.

OP posts:
OldTrot · 12/02/2023 18:46

@SomethingNastyInTheBallPool oh that's nothing! Merely a mini snack tbh

But I've been very sensible today

LulooLemon · 12/02/2023 23:53

@OldTrot Yikes 2.9! Now that was definitely in the rather alarming red zone.

It makes me realize what the result would be if someone munched their way through a large amount of really sugary stuff - like one of those huge meringues.

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 16/02/2023 09:36

My surprise yesterday was that incredible spike from a vegan burger. I mean, I knew the bun and ketchup would have an effect but thought the protein and fat might counteract it. No sirree.
My breakfast of a fried egg on seeded bread with a few shavings of cheddar, on the other hand, barely moved the needle.

@OldTrot, just for interest because your post got me wondering - what type of porridge do you use? Is it one of the 'fast cook' types?

Doliveira · 17/02/2023 14:35

Has anyone tried this using apple cider vinegar to see if the foods that spike them have less effect with supplementation?

LulooLemon · 20/02/2023 20:34

I've nearly finished my two weeks of wearing a CGM.

Does anyone know if there's any suggestions or support from Zoe in the interim between stopping wearing the CGM and receiving my personal report?

NeedNwJeans · 23/02/2023 19:41

@LulooLemon what do you mean by support? There were still daily messages while waiting the personal results. And you can always chat the support team, I suppose.

LulooLemon · 23/02/2023 19:55

I see what there is now in this interstitial period between submitting test data and receiving results.

Yes, as you say, still daily messages to read with suggestions of things to do.

And I'm continuing to log meals, which I wasn't expecting.

Am I the only one who wishes they were still wearing that CGM? 🤣
