Heavy period with clots

Tomorrowsanewday1 · 25/01/2023 20:50

I’ll be 40 in July and have always had normal periods. Back in May 22 my period was really heavy on day 3 filling pads with clots then stopped after day 4. June & July were exactly the same and I’ve gone back to normal since. However, today same thing has happened again.
I'm petrified that this is cervical cancer but others have mentioned it could just be my age. Coincidently, I have my smear booked for next month.
Anyone had anything similar?
Thanks

It could 'just' be fibroids, that's how mine let themselves be known. Make a GP appointment to get checked out and try not to let your mind jump to worst-case-scenario thinking in the meantime

Tomorrowsanewday1 · 25/01/2023 21:01

Would something like that be picked up on a smear?

Hi there- having been researching womens health issues actively the last 8 months I would ask you to clarify if you have ever had a transvaginal ultrasound? This is the diagnostic tool used to check for uterine fibroids. If you are experiencing heavy clotting and not bleeding between periods, I would think fibroids not cancer. Benign but annoying and for some painfully inconvenient, they create excess tissue to expel, and can mess with you a bit. Do request the diagnostic, a blood test and hormone level test, and no edamame(soy), hormone treated meats or red meats and zero eggs unless during cycle and only yolk no mayo/ white flours until you know results. green tea extract supplimentation is good, and minimising caffeine is good. Keep us in the loop!
- researcher, California usa
ps recently chemicals in plastic water bottles and many cosmetics have been linked to fibroids. Look up consumer safety list in your area(likely more safe than here in the usa) .

Sucessinthenewyear · 25/01/2023 21:02

You should discuss it with GP. Are you periods as regular as before?

Tomorrowsanewday1 · 25/01/2023 21:10

Yes periods are spot on with dates.

No, a smear wouldn't pick up fibroids. You'd
need an ultrasound.

MissCrowley · 25/01/2023 21:49

I'm having similar issues OP, along with feeling faint when on my period as I'm losing so much blood! Also I get really weird heart stuff going on as well and auditory migraines.
I'm being checked for PCOS and early menopause.
Having an ultrasound with internal camera and a smear test to rule anything sinister out. My guess is early onset menopause. I'm the other side of 35 but my maternal grandmother went through the menopause at 35 and I believe it can run in families.
Have you any relatives who went through menopause early?

Holliegee · 25/01/2023 21:53

I’ve just had this for 2 years, all
over covid !! Was honestly blessing through a tampon a towel 2 pairs in f knickers and then some ….
My smear test was clear - so admirer discussion with a gp and a specialist (I was there for my cfs and fibro) I had another smear, a scan including an internal scan and nothing was abnormal - so after years of not taking the contraceptive pill I’m not back on it and 6 months in enjoying relatively normal periods.

Blinky21 · 25/01/2023 23:14

I've had this for the last year or so, out of nowhere, my light painless periods have become heavy with clots and excruciatingly painful. Smear was clear as was transvaginal ultrasound so I've been prescribed Memfemic Acid and told to get on with it. It's so frustrating

practicepracticepractice · 25/01/2023 23:19

I had similar when I was your age (late 40s now). It wasn't painful either. And i used to be super regular.

I got the GP to refer me for scans. They found nothing that was causing it and it was likely to be age related. The clots have stopped and my periods have got irregular (peri). I went back for scans every 6 months for 2 years.

They did find a small cyst which was not related to the clotting and wasn't causing me any issues.

Bestdaysahead · 25/01/2023 23:30

I have had similar over the last couple of years....very heavy one month then normal the next (I am early 40's). I have had several scans as part of IVF....from the scans it was identified that I have a condition called adenomyosis (where tissue grows in wall of uterus) - which is the cause of my clotting/heavy bleeding. It is more common in women in their 40's/50's.

JJ8765 · 25/01/2023 23:30

Had this from about 44, they will probably do U/S rule stuff out and if clear will offer you a Mirena coil if it’s peri. This worked for me as all bleeding stopped. They will also test you for anaemia and may prescribe iron tablets.

Icecreamandapplepie · 25/01/2023 23:52

Since around 39/ 40, I've has brown spotting for 3 or 4 days 2 or 3 days of very heavy bleeding with clots then very quickly down to a day of light, pink spotting.

Regular as clockwork.

Can't go anywhere for 2 or 3 days when heavy.

I've always had pretty heavy periods, but they are defo worse. The brown spotting is new and frustrating

I'm putting it down to age. I started hrt last year to help with anxiety and get me through the next few years with sanity and bone strength (hopefully!) intact.

Icecreamandapplepie · 25/01/2023 23:53

I'm 44 now. Menopause can't come quick enough for me. Sick of the whole business.

Tomorrowsanewday1 · 26/01/2023 11:18

Thank you for sharing all your advice and experiences. I’m just so scared that it could be cancer but reading your responses it sounds like it can be quite common.

OP posts:
Holliegee · 26/01/2023 18:43

It is common but the only way you will be abele to find the cause and hopefully remedy it,is by going to your gp and sorting it out.
please go and come back and tell us what happened?
if anything threads like this help settle worries minds and if they can conclude positively it’s helpful to others too x

JustDanceAddict · 27/01/2023 17:23

I’m in peri and have fibroids - my last period was horrifically heavy. You’d need a scan to check for fibroids though, heavy periods aren’t an inductor for cervical cancer.
you could also have a polyp - I’ve had two removed in past 15 years - first one caused v heavy periods and mid cycle bleeding (was in mid 30s then). The good news is they’re rarely cancerous and can be taken out under local these days!!

Tomorrowsanewday1 · 22/02/2023 20:30

Hi, had my smear last week (no result yet) and an appointment with GP who has put me on the 2wk pathway and I have a scan next Wed. I’m really scared that it will be some form of cancer. 😟
Period has done exactly the same this month; first 2 days normal then 3rd day lost a huge clot then nothing else until today (day 5) just a bit of brown blood. I’m baffled by it all.
Praying that I get some positive news soon.
Would be great to hear from anyone else with similar circumstances who had positive outcomes.

@Tomorrowsanewday1 Try not to worry, your symptoms are very much what I experienced, along with crippling stomach pain- it was Fibroids.
I underwent a surgery and haven’t looked back! Flooding and clotting every month really impacted my life, it’s awful.

marriedtoHomerSimpson · 23/02/2023 19:13

This sounds similar to what I've been dealing with. Diagnosed with adenomyosis just before Christmas and due to have an ablation in about a months time. Praying this will stop the bleeding as have to wear period knickers, max strength tampons and nighttime towels but still bleeding through as there are days when the blood is literally pouring out (sorry, tmi). Has led to anaemia and everything that brings.

Tomorrowsanewday1 · 23/02/2023 19:52

Thanks for your responses, good to hear other people’s outcomes.
I had a full blood count last week which was normal and an iron test that showed I’m anaemic, my level is 10 so I’m now on tablets. Not sure how bad that is?!?

OP posts:
Aquamarine1029 · 23/02/2023 19:58

I had exactly what you're dealing with. My periods had always been light and regular as clockwork. When I was 40, everything went bonkers. It was peri-menopause and I was on HRT by 41.

discobrain · 23/02/2023 20:01

Perimenopause. It hit me when I was forty.

YukoandHiro · 23/02/2023 20:03

Also 40 and my periods have been like this since they came back after bf my second child (so maybe a year now). I hate it. Haven't had any checks as they're not painful but for three days each month it's so heavy and hard to manage

Tomorrowsanewday1 · 23/02/2023 20:17

Awful that everyone is suffering but gives me comfort that no one’s is anything very serious (cancer). My mum was late starting the menopause but my grandma was 40 so I did wonder but the dr said you’re most likely to follow your mum.
