To ask you to tell me a site for ordering urgent antibiotics for my tooth

I've got an problematic wisdom tooth. It's flared up and gone away again over the years, with the dentist not recommending extraction, but I haven't been seen since before the pandemic (though it hasn't flared up during that time, either).

It suddenly started up the day before last, was managing it with paracetamol and clove oil but last night it deteriorated. Awake overnight, more of a sharp pain which is unbearable when painkillers run out, feeling generally ill rather than just toothache.

The dentist cannot see me until next week. I tried my doctor for antibiotics and they totally dismissed the idea, even though I said I have been hospitalised with an infected tooth in the past and I can recognise that it is the same situation and I am feeling worse fairly rapidly, and I wouldn't even need to see a GP, just the prescription over the phone would be fine. I phoned 111 but am still waiting for a call back. Even so, I have used them in this area before and they didn't get me a dentist appointment.

I am running out of time, I can feel myself getting in more and more pain and feeling more unwell. My left hand is tingling and my face is a little swollen on the affected side.

I need antibiotics tomorrow or the day after. A simply amoxycillin prescription that I've had many times before. Can anyone recommend me one of those sites where you can order them directly? I would really appreciate it as I am desperate.

Forgot to add my dentist won't issue the prescription without seeing me.

Lots of pharmacies do online private Dr appointments now. Could you try one of those?

If you Google “buy xxxxx online” you may be lucky, alternatively Boots offer some sort of online service, try their website? I will keep my fingers crossed for you

toothachecrisis · 10/01/2023 22:55

Thanks, I'm googling but a lot of the sites look a bit dodgy, so a recommendation of one someone has used would be good.

Could you try a private GP in your area?

bellsbuss · 10/01/2023 22:57

111 will do a prescription for antibiotics and send it to your nominated pharmacy

They are definitely dodgy if they are saying you can buy antibiotics without a prescription, could be end up taking anything!

toothachecrisis · 10/01/2023 22:57

Maybe, but would they cover it if the NHS GP won't help?

Phone dentist and ask to send a prescription to your local chemist That is what my dentist did

Will they even if it's a dental issue? Because the GP wouldn't do anything even though I described the symptoms of infection spreading.

You can pay as you go for a Bupa GP. It’s about £50. Then you can pick up a prescription using a code they email.

its not the GP won’t help - they can’t help. The only doctors with dental expertise are max-fax surgeons. Hope you get some useful input from your dentist soon.

BlüeöysterCunt · 10/01/2023 23:01

I thought that your dentist had a duty of care to see you within 24 hours for an emergency situation (extreme pain)? That's what I was told last time I phoned 111. Hope you feel better soon. Paramol can be quite effective for tooth pain.

FairyBatman · 10/01/2023 23:01

Can a local private dentist get you in sooner?

WetBandits · 10/01/2023 23:01

Is there no emergency dentist in your area? I’ve rung 111 before and had an emergency appointment within 2 hours for an infected wisdom tooth.

I sympathise entirely, dental pain is massively shit.

ReedRite · 10/01/2023 23:02

In my area 111 can set up an emergency NHS dentist appointment for you in this situation. I had this for pericoronitis. The dentist took one look in my mouth and wrote a script for Metronidazole. It wasn’t super local, but it was a Godsend.

Maybe give 111 a call and see if you have a similar arrangement in your area?

justasking111 · 10/01/2023 23:02

@toothachecrisis private or NHS dentist?

Private, there are no NHS dentists in my area.

I would try again tomorrow and be persistent. My dentist was more than happy to do it. If it is'a previous problem you have had then they really should If not is there another local dentist you can get appointment for tomorrow?

AvDemeisen · 10/01/2023 23:03

Can you telephone around other dentists and get an emergency appointment with a different dentist? Might be pricey though. Emergency appointments can be £75 odd.

toothachecrisis · 10/01/2023 23:03

Can someone tell me a simple condition I can describe to my GP over the phone that would warrant amoxy ?
