To ask you to tell me a site for ordering urgent antibiotics for my tooth

I've got an problematic wisdom tooth. It's flared up and gone away again over the years, with the dentist not recommending extraction, but I haven't been seen since before the pandemic (though it hasn't flared up during that time, either).

It suddenly started up the day before last, was managing it with paracetamol and clove oil but last night it deteriorated. Awake overnight, more of a sharp pain which is unbearable when painkillers run out, feeling generally ill rather than just toothache.

The dentist cannot see me until next week. I tried my doctor for antibiotics and they totally dismissed the idea, even though I said I have been hospitalised with an infected tooth in the past and I can recognise that it is the same situation and I am feeling worse fairly rapidly, and I wouldn't even need to see a GP, just the prescription over the phone would be fine. I phoned 111 but am still waiting for a call back. Even so, I have used them in this area before and they didn't get me a dentist appointment.

I am running out of time, I can feel myself getting in more and more pain and feeling more unwell. My left hand is tingling and my face is a little swollen on the affected side.

I need antibiotics tomorrow or the day after. A simply amoxycillin prescription that I've had many times before. Can anyone recommend me one of those sites where you can order them directly? I would really appreciate it as I am desperate.

I used a site called igp during lockdown, and picked up the prescription from boots after a doctor phoned me and sent the prescription there.

Boots obviously accepted the prescription and I got the medication they dispensed so it wasn’t like dodgy pills in the post, and I’m assuming they wouldn’t have processed the prescription if it didn’t come from a legit prescriber.

Coffeepot72 · 10/01/2023 23:07

i-gp.uk/

@PinkFrogss i have also heard of I-GP. OP, it might be worth a try?

Thanks, looks good. Annoyed that there is an glaring gap in coverage of emergency dental issues in this country.

Ask on Facebook if anyone has any? Someone will have some.

I couldn't get an amoxicillin prescription the other week had to have something else.

Can you Google hospitals with a dental department? We were advised to do this by our local hospital last time my other half had 3 infected teeth at once and was in the most tremendous pain he ended up on an IV drip.

Coffeepot72 · 10/01/2023 23:08

I-GP has a section about dental abscesses.

Yes, I'm going to try them. Looks to be just what I needed. Thanks everyone.

I used to keep antibiotics "in stock" and I need to start again, I think.

toothachecrisis · 10/01/2023 23:12

I think I'm going to end up in some kind of surgery anyway, because they said it's difficult to get at because my jaw doesn't open fully (ironically due to being forced open during an operation I had on an infected tooth in the past).

I agree, it’s also impossible to see an NHS dentist where I am and you have to travel quite far to a hospital with a dental department, which operates on a turn up and hope they see you that day basis rather than appointments.

No idea what you’re supposed to do if you don’t have the time or money to deal with that! Absolutely ridiculous.

I think the combined cost of Igp and the private prescription was a lot cheaper than an emergency NHS appointment plus prescription charge.

determinedtomakethiswork · 10/01/2023 23:12

If you have a private dentist, you should be able to phone them and explain. They can prescribe over the phone. Ideally, they should ask you to come in for a visit.

They have refused.

Its a sign of the times. I agree with you but it’s what people like the OP are being forced to do out of desperation.

BlüeöysterCunt · 10/01/2023 23:14

Personally I would phone your dentist in the morning and tell them you can't eat or sleep because of the pain - they tend to have emergency slots for this reason.

Also amoxicillin isn't effective for abscesses in my experience but metronidazole works very well if you are able to get that.

Hope you're feeling better soon

I take offence at your comment. I have been hospitalised with blood poisoning from an infected tooth before, I'm never going through that again.

What would be idiotic would be getting to this weekend without having started antibiotics; what's idiotic is that my GP that I pay thousands of pounds for won't issue a simple amoxycillin script to keep me out of hospital!

Do you live close enough to a city with a dental hospital that you could get there tomorrow? They will see emergencies, you just have to sit and wait your turn.

No, I don't. Thanks for the suggestion, though.

Amoxicillin isn't the best for blood poisoning unfortunately. That awful metro. Stuff is unfortunately.

toothachecrisis · 10/01/2023 23:22

Sorry for losing my temper. I'm not very well and I don't feel myself. I've been on the phone on and off all day and got nowhere. I've had no sleep and I'm in pain.

karmalama · 10/01/2023 23:23

Metronidazole is better for tooth infections and less likely to have resistance implications.
You can buy it online if it's for bacterial vaginitis, which maybe you also have ??..

Beekeepersapprentice · 10/01/2023 23:24

No it's idiotic that you think your GP is prepared to risk being struck off for prescribing for a dental issue.
People are so ignorant.
Doctors have no medicolegal protection for prescribing for dental problems. If it's genuinely infected then ED is your answer as you can see a maxillofacial surgeon who are the only doctors allowed to prescribe for dental problems. And can actually diagnose it as well (most dentists say that 99% of things that people think they need antibiotics for they don't so I'm not surprised they won't do it over the phone. However it is their job to assess you and not your GP's).

toothachecrisis · 10/01/2023 23:24

Regret not insisting on extraction years ago, I just followed their advice though. 😞

toothachecrisis · 10/01/2023 23:32

My dentist is not a usual dentist's, it's a group of specialists who do things like implants, crowns etc. They are not even there a lot of the time.

3beesinmybonnet · 10/01/2023 23:34

Have you tried rinsing your mouth with warm salty water at half hour intervals? Dissolve a teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water and hold each mouthful in your mouth as long as you can, working your way through the full cup. Swill it well round the infected area and the salty environment kills the bacteria. Recommended to me by a dentist years ago.
Also cocodamol for the pain.
