To ask you to tell me a site for ordering urgent antibiotics for my tooth

I've got an problematic wisdom tooth. It's flared up and gone away again over the years, with the dentist not recommending extraction, but I haven't been seen since before the pandemic (though it hasn't flared up during that time, either).

It suddenly started up the day before last, was managing it with paracetamol and clove oil but last night it deteriorated. Awake overnight, more of a sharp pain which is unbearable when painkillers run out, feeling generally ill rather than just toothache.

The dentist cannot see me until next week. I tried my doctor for antibiotics and they totally dismissed the idea, even though I said I have been hospitalised with an infected tooth in the past and I can recognise that it is the same situation and I am feeling worse fairly rapidly, and I wouldn't even need to see a GP, just the prescription over the phone would be fine. I phoned 111 but am still waiting for a call back. Even so, I have used them in this area before and they didn't get me a dentist appointment.

I am running out of time, I can feel myself getting in more and more pain and feeling more unwell. My left hand is tingling and my face is a little swollen on the affected side.

I need antibiotics tomorrow or the day after. A simply amoxycillin prescription that I've had many times before. Can anyone recommend me one of those sites where you can order them directly? I would really appreciate it as I am desperate.

GP’s aren’t licensed to prescribe for dental problems, some of them do when the patient appears to be systemically unwell or has an airway compromising infection, but they can then clearly demonstrate that the benefits overwhelmingly outweigh the risks.

Don’t understand why everyone is clamouring for the GP to take responsibility for this when it’s a dental problem? Teeth and the soft tissues of the mouth are the dentists remit. Put pressure on your dentist to make you a space or go and pay a private one to see you.

toothachecrisis · 10/01/2023 23:44

@3beesinmybonnet Thanks, I had heard of salt rinses but didn't know it was recommended to do it so often.

Thanks everyone! I've got several "leads".

Scared now as I am sure I'm going to have an extraction but God knows how or where, just hope I can get it done in a calm way and not be admitted via A&E.

because they used to?

toothachecrisis · 10/01/2023 23:46

@YouWithoutEnd I am paying a private one, over 200 per appointment actually. And there are no NHS dentists in my area. Not that I would go to one if they were as they are completely shambolic to the point of being incompetent in my experience.

I agree with pp that you need to find a different dentist . If you have raving toothache you shouldn’t be waiting until next week to be seen .

Hapoydayz · 10/01/2023 23:50

OP I used online dentist to get antibiotics, oh the relief😀 Quick online questions and got what was required without delay. It meant as I couldn’t get a dentist appointment for at least a week after the infection and most importantly pain had gone away so they could actually work on the tooth which they said they couldn’t have done with infection

You’ve already said that they’re not a proper first contact dental practice and they’re never there! Why are you paying them so much money for patchy and inconsistent service?

Get signed up to a practice that offers Denplan, and does their own Out of Hours emergency cover, as soon as you can.

BUPA GP. Say you've had a severe sore throat for over two weeks.

YouWithoutEnd · 10/01/2023 23:53

whynotwhatknot · 10/01/2023 23:45

because they used to?

Aye, they used to treat haemorrhoids with hot irons, and give Cocaine for depression too. They even had Heroin cough syrup for kids too!

toothachecrisis · 10/01/2023 23:53

The dentist situation in my area is so bad that the struggle is to see private dentists, let alone NHS!

Uk
You can get 3 days worth of antibiotics from pharmacy!!

Lindtcat · 10/01/2023 23:54

Hi OP. I know you're in pain and impatient but 111 will 100% prescribe you antibiotics over the phone when they speak to you. A dentist will not do any treatment while you have an infection anyways. I had terrible toothache about 2 months ago, 111 prescribed me antibiotics over the phone. Also have just been prescribed antibiotics for a UTI, once again over the phone. How long have you been waiting ? I called 111 at 4.30pm today and I still hadn't received a call at 9.30pm, so I called back and was called back by a dr within 30 mins. They encouraged me to call back if I hadn't received a call back within a couple of hours. Hope you get sorted soon.

toothachecrisis · 10/01/2023 23:55

@Lindtcat They still haven't called back. I think it's late to call them back now, I don't feel up to it. I'll try tomorrow. Thanks for your advice.

BUPA GP. Say you've had a severe sore throat for over two weeks.

OP is going to end up on a two week wait pathway for an ENT Cancer at this rate. Or having a Monospot test to exclude a viral glandular fever.

Tattyoldted · 10/01/2023 23:56

Fingers crossed you get that call back very soon OP. I feel very sorry for you, toothache is unbearable Flowers

toothachecrisis · 10/01/2023 23:58

I get scared by it, when I was in hospital with a dental infection before I was hallucinating it was so bad I was shouting in the ward about the things I could see! It took me 6 months to a year to recover my strength and that was as a young person.

Been in a similar situation previously and got metradonazole(I think that's it) from online gp ... had to lie and say it was for B.V. but I was prepared to lie to stop the infection!!

Lindtcat · 11/01/2023 00:00

It's not too late! They are 24 hours! Call back and explain the pain is getting worse. Even if someone calls you through the night, keep your phone by you on loud. They should be able to prescribe you antibiotics, you can pick up tomorrow morning when pharmacies open.

Happybefree · 11/01/2023 00:02

Don’t have any extra advice but best of luck, really hope you feel better soon.

HappenstanceMarmite · 11/01/2023 00:05

In the meantime, ibuprofen is better for dental pain than paracetamol. Ibuprofen reduces swelling which is the cause of most dental pain. You can take it alongside paracetamol or cocodamol too. Good luck. I have years of dental pain behind me 😳

WetBandits · 11/01/2023 00:23

Fuck sake, just popped back to the thread and have seen someone suggesting you ask on Facebook if anyone has any random antibiotics lying around?!

Please don’t follow this moronic advice. Jesus fucking wept. No wonder we’re spiralling towards antibiotic resistance if people are suggesting stupid shit like this.

Also you asked if anyone could suggest a condition that you could lie about to your GP to get hold of some amoxicillin by deception?! Please don’t even consider doing this either, or ordering it online. You are not a qualified prescriber and therefore shouldn’t be self-treating with antibiotics.

I know you’re in pain and I get it as I’ve been there, but there are legitimate ways to go about getting the help that you need. Chase 111 if you need to, explain that you are desperate. Take regular pain relief, avoid very hot or very cold foods and try the salt water rinses and holding a hot compress against your jaw on the affected side.

toothachecrisis · 10/01/2023 23:24

Regret not insisting on extraction years ago, I just followed their advice though. 😞

I know how you feel - I've had three root canals on my tooth and just taken my last antibiotic for yet another infection in it. They're adamant it can be saved but I'm so fed up. It's really miserable 😖 I feel your pain.

Yabado · 11/01/2023 00:47

mychemistplus.co.uk/product/prescription-treatments/dental-prescription-treatments/dental-tooth-infection-abscess-antibiotics/

i got some from here a few months ago
I was having a root stump removed and wanted some just in case the pain was really bad or I got an infection . The dentist never give you enough antibiotics and it’s a nightmare to get any afterwards

think it cost about £50 and I got them within 48hrs

thaegumathteth · 11/01/2023 00:47

I hope you have your phone on loud because they may well ring back anytime.

I don't think amoxycilin would be given tbh - I've had metronidazole for dental abscesses.

If you've already had sepsis before the absolute last thing you should do is potentially take the wrong antibiotics - that's a one way ticket to being seriously unwell.

I'd second the salt water advice in the meantime.
