Bronchitis? Warning gross photo!!

Shooshan · 20/12/2022 00:06

I've been ill for about 4 days.

Fever, temperature, sweats, vomiting, cough.

Now my throat is incredibly sore and I'm just coughing up this stuff constantly.

Is it worth trying to see the GP? Will they even do anything?
Can I buy something over the counter to help.

I'm so stressed. I can't eat or be active for too long without needing a nap

My chest is so sore.

I've got no Christmas food shop. I've not wrapped a single present 😭😭

Yes see the GP. They’ll decide whether they think it’s viral or bacterial and give antibiotics if they think it’s bacterial.

Ohtheweatheroutsideistoocold · 20/12/2022 00:10

Last time I was coughing up stuff like that it was a chest infection and I needed antibiotics

I kept leaving it because I don't like bothering the doctors and I ended up in A and E because I was coughing up so much mucus I could barely breath and it was causing asthma attacks

Better to get it checked by the GP now to see if it's viral or bacterial

Shooshan · 20/12/2022 00:11

Oh dear.

I thought I was being dramatic.

I'll try and get an appointment tomorrow. Thankyou

It does look very thick phlegm but most of these are viral not bacterial so antibiotics won't help unfortunately.

Rest and sleep as much as you can. Don't worry about the presents right now.

GenerallyGreenerGrass · 20/12/2022 00:15

You need an urgent same day appointment ,you’ll need to ring the Gp as soon as they open, tell receptionist you are coughing up green/brown phlegm and you need an emergency appointment.
You need antibiotics….

MsMcGonagall · 20/12/2022 00:18

there's something going round called respiratory syncytial virus, and yes it can develop into bronchitis or similar. DH was like you and eventually ended up in A&E due to breathing struggles . I got a blood oxygen monitor and he was as low as he could be without having to return to A&E. Antibiotics and steroids for him, from the GP. So I'm glad to hear you're going to contact GP

Benjispruce4 · 20/12/2022 00:20

I’ve head that before and it has cleared up in its own without antibiotics but it’s taken weeks and I don’t have any underlying health issue or asthma . Try steaming and call GP.

Benjispruce4 · 20/12/2022 00:22

I’m on the sofa as I keep coughing and waking DH. I’ve a sore throat and can’t clear it properly then get a sudden attack of coughing. So tired.

It's exhausting isn't it?

I'm just going from sweating to freezing and everytime I take a deep breath it triggers a coughing fit.

I just want to sleep.

Fingers crossed I can get an appointment tomorrow

Ooh, I had that a few weeks ago! Same symptoms at least. Not sure if the antibiotics kicked it or if it was just time but it took about a week to feel remotely ok and a couple more weeks to stop being knackered. Good luck!

Mince314s · 20/12/2022 00:36

Also hot showers and lemsip helped.

That's good, I thought I was being over dramatic too, but it was very much not the case

The thing is, if you are like me, you might feel bad about taking up GP time.

But by avoiding an initial GP consult I ended up taking it A&E time, needing two chest x rays, a futher GP appointment and a phone call, a longer dose of steroids than might otherwise have been necessary and 2 rounds of antibiotics to clear the infection because it had got so bad. I ended up costing the NHS far more money than I would have done had I made an appointment a few days sooner.

So it's definitely worth checking to be on the safe side

Fifi00 · 20/12/2022 00:48

I've got this bloody pharmacy has sold out of night nurse!!! Got some benylin mucus cough night and paracetamol. I'm on the sofa even propped up in bed is making all the mucus collect up. It's bloody gross mucus machine! I've snotted down my face lots of times after sneezing.

Shooshan · 20/12/2022 08:47

I have the same OP, I’m on day 6. I’ve had the fever which has now gone, the aches, sore throat etc. I’m not getting antibiotics for now even though I’m pretty exhausted. I think it’s just a virus that needs to run it’s course. If I still like this in a week coughing this up I’ll ring my GP.

Rubbish isn’t it so close to Christmas!

DarkKarmaIlama · 20/12/2022 09:25

@Shooshan

did you get antibodies? I’ll have to ring tomorrow if I’m not better but just not sure if I’ll be able to get booked in even ringing at 8 the appointments go very quickly 😢.

DarkKarmaIlama · 20/12/2022 09:25

*antibiotics

Shooshan · 20/12/2022 11:40

No antibiotics.

My temp is 39.9

So she sent me home to take 2 paracetamol and I have to go back in 20 mins to have my temp taken again

She's talking about A&E but there's ambulance strikes today so she said I'll be there till tomorrow. I'm not going

DN has tonsillitis and had to get her penicillin from 30 miles away because it is in low stock due to strep a!!! What a mess. Get well soon op. Rest when you can. Got any zinc/Vit c? Mainline it!

DarkKarmaIlama · 20/12/2022 13:33

@Shooshan

Have you taken ibuprofen? That’s better I find at reducing temps.

awful isn’t it. I can’t get into see anyone no GP or walk in centre. I don’t have a temp though.

hope you feel better soon.

Shooshan · 20/12/2022 15:13

I can't take ibuprofen due to a previous surgery :(

I've eaten a little and had some juice

OP posts:
Sameshitdifferentdayx · 20/12/2022 16:39

She's better off just giving you abx, because I can say that's probably what you need! Hope you feel better soon op x

Shooshan · 20/12/2022 17:22

She said she thinks it's viral so antibiotics wouldn't do anything.

Yes I knew that's what they'd say.
