Help, I can’t stop coughing!

Got some sort of cold that is causing a dry/tickly cough that seems to involve my whole chest. Can’t sleep because of it and it’s driving me insane - I’m so tired! Any tips?

Honey and lemon in hot water and sip. Even when it's cooled during the night it soothes

KnottyKnitting · 16/10/2022 23:01

Teaspoon of butter with sugar mashed in. Suck slowly and let it trickle down your throat.

kissmelittleass · 16/10/2022 23:54

No tips only a me too!! Awful cough my ribs and lungs hurt from coughing
I actually hate trying to sleep because I wake up having a coughing fit that don't stop for ages!
Tried the hot water and lemon, ginger lemon tea hasn't worked for me
I'm actually afraid to cough at this point think I'm annoying the neighbours
Nasty cough you have my sympathy

Sounds like covid.

ByeByeMissAmericanPie · 16/10/2022 23:57

Drinking plenty of liquids all day.
having a bath before bed
sleep with your mouth partially covered by a sheet. Keep the air going into your throat as humid as possible.

FinallyHere · 17/10/2022 00:06

Once a cough gets hold of me, the only thing that lets me get any sleep at all is 'Night nurse' ideally the capsules.

It's just a post nasal drip but sounds horrendous.

h78 · 17/10/2022 18:40

I sympathise, I've had a cough for three weeks. Finally caved in today and rang the doctor for antibiotics due to a fever over the weekend.
Warm milk with turmeric and honey is good for coughs and also gargling with lukewarm salt water. Hope you feel better soon.

Rollingdownland · 17/10/2022 18:42

Sleeping pills are the only thing that help. Codeine also good for this - get some of that from the chemist and take one last thing.

Sounds like covid.

Other respiratory infections are available 🙄

Alysskea · 17/10/2022 19:34

Thanks all. Not tried the butter or saltwater yet! Night nurse and day nurse don’t touch the cough (bloody nothing will) but hoping they can help me drift off so I can at least get a bit of sleep. Desperate for this to be over I know it’s not exactly the worst thing that can happen to a person but so frustrating! That tickle in the back of my throat - aghhhh.

I feel your pain, this effing cough is driving me insane!

gamerchick · 17/10/2022 19:57

Night nurse.

Although one time I said that I got a load of abusive PMs for recommending something that suppresses a cough.

SarahWoodruff · 17/10/2022 19:59

A swig of Benylin with a red wine chaser normally gets me a solid 8 hours....not medically advised, mind.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 17/10/2022 19:59

Vicks on your feet.

and make sure that the air in your bedroom isn’t too dry.

inheritanceshiteagain · 17/10/2022 19:59

I find if i put my head under the blanket and breathe in the warm moist air it doesn't irritate my chest as much. I dose myself up with night nurse or niteall so that I can be semi comotose from the drugs and i sleep that way. Used to get a fabulous cough medicine that suppresses coughs, but as it had some type of opiate in, it was banned!

inheritanceshiteagain · 17/10/2022 20:01

There is nothing wrong in suppressing a non productive cough which is dry and irritating, and caused by inflammation in the lungs but not producing sputum.

squatjustice · 17/10/2022 20:03

Vicks on your feet ALWAYS works with the kids!

If the cough is productive (so bringing up mucus) then suppressing it can keep that down and lead to infection but a GP told me years ago that suppressing it just overnight is unlikely to keep enough down there to cause a problem and the benefits of getting sleep outweigh the risk

lokabrenna · 17/10/2022 20:05

I would use a cough suppressant too, the best one is Robitussin Dry Cough Medicine. Make sure it’s the dry cough version as it actually suppresses your cough reflex (in your brain). Sometimes a cough just becomes a bit of a habit and this medicine fixes that, but you do have to keep up with the doses for it to work.

You are not meant to take it if you have a mucus cough though as the mucous will just build up. The chemist won’t give it you if you have even a hint of a gurgle in your cough.

It does! I have no idea why and have never tried it myself but it’s got to be worth op giving it a go!

lokabrenna · 17/10/2022 20:10

I think there are other brands too, the active ingredient you are looking for is Dextromethorphan, you can only get liquids and they taste awful to stop you drinking the whole bottle and tripping your tits off on the stuff.

snoodles · 17/10/2022 20:28

Benylin Mucus cough Max always works for me!

Get a humidifier and keep the window open slightly. Sleepy slightly upright. Make sure if you drink from a bottle that it's clean and no mould!

Coughs are annoying.

Holeymoleymacaroni · 17/10/2022 20:32

I have the same! It's not covid.

Absolutely miserable....its so chesty and hurts every time at this point. Can't take much due to pregnancy but going to give the vicks on the feet a try as recommended up above.

Hangupsrus · 17/10/2022 20:33

Codeine is a cough suppressant and often given purely for this reason with very bad coughs. Try that op, you can buy it over the counter.

Speedweed · 17/10/2022 20:48

Suck a boiled sweet - not a cough sweet, anything with menthol will make you cough more, something plain like a fox's glacier fruit.
