Sudden excessive foot swelling

DS is 20yo and normally fit and well. No injuries. He woke in the night feeling his foot felt weird and painful and by morning it was swollen and is now nearly double its normal size. Swelling on top and bottom. He can’t move his toes and can’t put his foot flat on the floor. Doesn’t look red. He says it’s painful all the time especially when he moves it. It feels warm. He says he can feel his toe throbbing. Pain is worse in his big toe. He thinks the sensation is beginning to go.

Is it worth seeing a chemist tomorrow to see if they can help. Or does he need to go to a&e now…..we don’t have an Out of hours or minor injuries.

I’d go to A& E , or ring 111.
is he elevating it in the mean time ?

cptartapp · 04/10/2022 18:20

Don't bother with the chemist. They will just say see a doctor.
If sensation is going and it's really twice the size I'd head to A&E.

hiredandsqueak · 04/10/2022 18:22

Could be Gout, he needs seeing asap ring 111.

QuebecBagnet · 04/10/2022 18:28

Thanks, 111 have said go to a chemist and have directed us to one which is open till late….didn’t know there was an evening one so that’s good.

A and E now

KangarooKenny · 04/10/2022 18:33

A&E, not a chemist. Before the circulation gets cut off.

Pineappleflowers · 04/10/2022 18:33

A&E if queue not insane, but they won’t do much. We had similar but knew the cause (insect bite) A&E gave us antibiotics and advised to take ibuprofen and anti-histamines and keep it elvated and do frozen peas wrapped in tea towel 5 min off 5 min off as much as possible.

But not knowing cause is much more worrying and Idon’t know what a chemist can do, our chemist knows nothing.

Yeah when I googled it was the circulation I was worried about. Well the hospital is just past the chemist so if the pharmacist can’t help we can head to a&e but it’s a 12 hour plus wait so to be honest may as well just wait until the GP is open tomorrow. I’ve given him a piriton already.

Could it be an ingrown toenail that’s become infected?

justasking111 · 04/10/2022 19:50

Spider bite. OH had one. Last week a hornet got him on the forearm. It looked like Popeye's. Really nasty swelling and pain

GetOffTheRoof · 04/10/2022 20:13

Have a look between his toes - are there any cuts, athletes foot leading to splits in the skin etc? Could be cellulitis, although I'd expect reddening if it were an infection like that.

QuebecBagnet · 04/10/2022 20:43

Doesn’t look like a toe nail, I can’t see any marks which suggest a spider bite, no sign of cuts, split skin, etc.

hes been to two chemists now, first one said it was fractured and he needs to go to a&e. Ds thought unlikely as no injury so went to another chemist who doesn’t know the cause but said to ice it so he’s back at home icing it but it’s got worse in the last hour or two and he’s in quite a bit of pain. He’s going to see the gp tomorrow or we do have a 9-5 minor injuries unit so ma6be visit there.

Is his foot hot?
if so get to A&E quick, it could be cellulitis, thus can turn to sepsis.

Yes it’s hot but neither pharmacist thought it was cellulitis. 🤷‍♀️

So one said A&E and another didn’t, so you went with the one who didn’t, and it’s getting worse. Go to A&E.

hiredandsqueak · 04/10/2022 20:57

You should go to A&E, it's hot and painful swollen and getting worse so he needs to be seen.

Thinkingblonde · 04/10/2022 21:01

It’s getting worse. Go to A&E.

I have told him. He’s an adult, doesn’t want to go. I’ve told him MN thinks he might have cellulitis.

DeeofDenmark · 04/10/2022 21:08

Well you have asked here and there is a consensus that you need to go to A&E. It much else to say, I understand he is an adult but if I were the parent I would be VERY insistent.

verdantverdure · 04/10/2022 21:08

Did they consider deep vein thrombosis? I'd go to A&E for this.

MissMaple82 · 04/10/2022 21:21

I wouldn't bother A&E just ring GP in morning

DottyLittleRainbow · 04/10/2022 21:22

Get to A&E tonight, this is a sign of DVT - also could be an infection that may lead to sepsis.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/10/2022 21:27

He needs to be seen at a&e.

Thinkingblonde · 04/10/2022 21:35

I had a swollen arm, from wrist to elbow, I went to my GP, he sent me to A&E with a suspected DVT.

Shiningstarr · 04/10/2022 21:59

Omg what are you doing??? Get to A&E!
I bet the Gp sends you there tomorrow.
