Sudden excessive foot swelling

DS is 20yo and normally fit and well. No injuries. He woke in the night feeling his foot felt weird and painful and by morning it was swollen and is now nearly double its normal size. Swelling on top and bottom. He can’t move his toes and can’t put his foot flat on the floor. Doesn’t look red. He says it’s painful all the time especially when he moves it. It feels warm. He says he can feel his toe throbbing. Pain is worse in his big toe. He thinks the sensation is beginning to go.

Is it worth seeing a chemist tomorrow to see if they can help. Or does he need to go to a&e now…..we don’t have an Out of hours or minor injuries.

Jakers I thought you'd have been sitting on a hospital chair for a couple of hours by now.

Could be anything like others have suggested (maybe serious). I first thought gout, does he drink much or eat lots of rich food? But it could be sepsis or DVT. A&E now.

DVT or gout perhaps

QuebecBagnet · 05/10/2022 13:41

He’s seen a GP (or possibly a practice nurse I’m not sure) today, has been prescribed pain killers and referred for a blood test in a few days incase it’s gout. Which seems unlikely at 20yo? But they didn’t know what else it might be but doesn’t think sepsis, etc

"Victorian disease gout makes UK return as NHS sees sudden surge and shares key symptoms - Essex Live" www.essexlive.news/news/health/victorian-disease-gout-makes-uk-7623102.amp

Weirdly gout is on the rise.

He’s got no risk factors for having gout other than being male. He’s young, healthy weight, doesn’t drink, no family history, eats healthier than most people. Be odd if it is gout.

It's unlikely to be broken if he's not hurt it, so sounds more serious, encourage him again to go to A&E.

EmmaH2022 · 05/10/2022 14:14

I'd go to A&E. Gout seems unlikely.

blood clot? I would not take a risk here but sadly would settle in at A&E for a long wait.

Not unknown to break a bone and not know.

Not unknown to break a bone and not know.

Son was in a rugby accident, broken leg, pins, plates etc. Six months rehabilitation. No-one ever x-rayed his foot. Two years later the limp got worse and worse. Eventually referred to consultant the scan discovered he'd been walking with broken metatarsals since the accident. He's had two operations and needs another.

So an injury can be an old one

All the more reason to get it checked out in my opinion.
