For those MNetters who have been so kind as to be interested in DHs health, I feel that you are long overdue an update.

6 weeks before Christmas he was terribly ill with an accidental opiate overdose. I was told to monitor him for 24 hours and to phone 999 if he stopped breathing! He went into the Hospice for 5 days and they sorted out his medication, and put him on a different drug. They also sorted out his nerve pain and vomiting. In the run up, he lost 10 kg and looked awful. I began to wonder if he would live to Christmas.

Once his pain was under control his oncologist started him on a second line treatment of Oxaliplatin and capecytapine.

He had his 3 round today and his doctor is delighted with the progress that he has made. He is slowly putting the weight back on, is no longer in pain, his tumour symptoms have subsided, he is no longer being sick, he is eating like a horse, and went into work every day last week (just for 2 hours , but this is a big step forward)

Doc wants him to continue with the treatment and is discussing further treatment options when he can no longer tolerate the side effect of this drug regimen.

Miraculous! I have my darling boy back for a little while longer.

MB - that must have been v scary, when my Dad had Breast CA 3.5 yrs ago, he was accidentally od on opiates, and couldn't breath - he and my mum were terrified. Sadly, after that he refused to have enough for his pain, and was very scared of not being able to breath - he died 3 years ago next month.

I hadn't seen your threads before, but long may the improvements last. Enjoy him and every precious day you have together. It brings tears to my eyes seeing others go through what we went through - even down to drug OD!!

OMG what wonderful news!! When I was staring into the abyss before Christmas with ds1 I thought of you so much, and of the courage and love that you both demonstrate - and thought that if the worst happened to ds I would want to handle it as you have done. You are a truly inspirational couple, and here's waiting for the next NY resolution.

That's wonderful news! I recognised your name after you gave me such helpful advice about teaching part time. I had no idea you were going through such a tough time. Puts my worries about going back to work into perspective. So pleased for you.

Thanks for the update, MB - that's just lovely!

It's a good sign, isn't it, that his doc is making plans for the future and not just firefighting from day to day.
