I know there is a mumsnet runners thread but I am a total beginner, and feel a bit overawed on there as they all seem really experienced.

I am going to be following this training programme, running 3x a week, starting next week once my children are back at school. I say running, but in reality i will be starting with a brisk walk, then picking up the pace over the next couple of months.

I have registered interest in Race For life, which is may/june, and will be taking part in the harefield fun run.

Anyone want to join me

Thanks Pinkspotty - you (and Minum) make me think Week 4 might just be possible.

Misscreant _ I have trainers which are goodish although v. old (I bought them when I first joint a gym 7-8 years ago I think) but my gym attendance has been so sporadic over that time they still look pretty new . Trouser wise I have a cut off pair of addidas sport trouser things but when its cold I am wearing a pair of not really jogging trousers, more like lounge trousers. Did order a pair of running trousers from Next (as I'm short so their petite are short enough) but they were too big so I need to re-order. I have sport tops too but they are from my old gyming days pre-flabby tummy so they do tend to ride up a bit too much.

Lostme - my feet and ankles hurt for the first couple of weeks and I was thinking it was my trainers but they seem to have settled this week so guess they just weren't used to it...

I'm another fan of the podcast despite the music - although I have to say probably the music I listen to isn't suitable for running to anyway. I run on my own but I don't have it too loud and keep an eye out !

Good luck next week everyone (I start week 4 tomorrow - and have vowed not to drink tonight in preparation and sunday is usually one of my permitted wine nights - now there's dedication ).

Minum · 03/02/2008 19:09

I am very excited about starting week 5 tommorow, if I make it, I'll be running 20mins solid by Friday - how cool would that be I know what you mean WB but I'm drinking tonight, one of my targets is to proove you can drink every day, and still be an athlete, I won't give in to the anti-fun brigade

barbamama · 03/02/2008 19:14

Just wanted to join in as have just seen this thread and have been thinking about doing some running myself - this beginners guide looks great. i have been running on the treadmill at the gym since just before Xmas and am up to 20 mins. I know it is not the same as outside but at least I know I can run for that long while bf which I wasn't at all sure of! Will try and start tommorow! The park has been staring accusingly at me all week ....

widgypog · 03/02/2008 20:12

Hi I saw this thread today and downloaded and started this evening. I actually enjoyed it. Was just wondering has anyone lost any weight as that is my main motivation. I already eat healthily and do pilates and line dancing but its not shifting.

pinkspottywellies · 03/02/2008 20:18

Eek I've just finished week 4, all proud of myself and now I've read minums post and I should be running 20 mins by Friday??? I just had to go on the website and check That's not even funny I need to sit down

But I did get 2 and a half pylons further tonight than the first session of week 4

I too have no proper sports gear. I think I've had my jogging bottoms since school, my trainers were a pair that my sister's friend left in her car and dsis gave them to me although my scaffolding sports bra is from more recently when I went to a gym (still about 5 years old but not exactly worn out!)

pinkspottywellies · 03/02/2008 20:22

Welcome widgypog! I have lost 9 lb in January. good luck.

widgypog · 03/02/2008 20:35

thanks wellies..great weight loss..look forward to similar results as I only really want to lose a stone..just seems to be stuck to me

AitchTwoOh · 03/02/2008 20:35

just from the running, pinkspot? really?

wheelybug · 03/02/2008 20:40

Welcome widgypog. I have lost weight too although I have combined running with trying to be careful about what I eat and cutting down on wine. I don't know how much though because I don't have any scales but my clothes are definitely looser.

Well done PinkSpotty - quakes at the thought that will be me next sunday ... but lets get through week 4 first.

Am going for a change of scene tomorrow and going to richmond park to run. A double bonus is one of my best friends does a military fitness class in the park tomorrow at the same time as my run will be so we're meeting for cake water afterwards.

AitchTwoOh · 03/02/2008 20:41

(if you see QS's dh on his bike be sure to poke a stick in his spokes from me, will ya? )

wheelybug · 03/02/2008 20:42

Is that to me Aitch ? Who's QS (frantically tries to think....) and whats her dh doing on a bike (and what have you got against it eh ???)

AitchTwoOh · 03/02/2008 20:46

lol, it's on another thread. he's telling her she should get fit...

wheelybug · 03/02/2008 20:51

LOL - yes I know the thread you mean now...

You know, I would do the stick in the spokes thing but fear he's likely to catch up with me as I'm limping along red faced and wheezing and who knows where he'd stick the stick

widgypog · 03/02/2008 20:54

thnaks wheely..how have you found it?

pinkspottywellies · 03/02/2008 21:22

I've been trying to eat better as well Aitch. I realised at Christmas that still eating 3 meals and 2 snacks a day was not really necessary now that dd is over a year - I'd got in a bit of an 'I'm breastfeeding; I must eat' rut. So running and eating better seems to be doing the trick.

MissCreant · 03/02/2008 21:24

pink - 20 mins by friday, are you serious? How can that be? We ran for 22 mins today but not all in one go, 5 6 6 5, I think it will be yonks before we do it all in one go.

91bs in one month? Wow!

MissCreant · 03/02/2008 21:25

Isn't 3 meals and two snacks sort of normal?

pinkspottywellies · 03/02/2008 21:27

MrsC, up til now I've done the same thing 3 times for a week then moved up. This week - week 5 - you have to do 3 lots of 5 mins on the first session, two lots of 8 mins on the second and 20 minutes on the third session. it's not even funny.

SparklyGothKat · 03/02/2008 21:27

I haven't managed to get out this week, because my ankles are really hurting. Not sure what I have done, but it hurts to walk and go up and down the stairs, I feel really old.

pinkspottywellies · 03/02/2008 21:28

I ate a lot of cake with the bf regime I think it's nice but not strictly necessary and maybe the cause of my extra chins

MissCreant · 03/02/2008 21:36

Hmm, surely cake once a day is ok, no?

I can't believe you leap from 8 mins to 20 in one session. How is that possible?

pinkspottywellies · 03/02/2008 21:37

sgk. Look after yourself and get back into it when you feel ready.

AitchTwoOh · 03/02/2008 21:39

skg, are you going to get checked at the doc's?

pinkspot, if i search back through this thread am i going to find you saying 'omg when will it end?' about the first week? because if you were all 'oh that was peasy' then i'm not looking.

SparklyGothKat · 03/02/2008 21:40

I can bearly bend my lower leg, I do walk on the edge of my feet, could this cause it?
