DD has been sick 16 times since 8am, she is refusing to even sip water or take any fluid, would offering her an ice lolly be bad?

She is 7 (just)

Has been sick 16 times already today (she has been counting!!) she wont even sip water or anything (not even to rinse out her mouth) She took some calpol about half an hour ago (and hasn't been sick again.

Would it be ok to give her an ice lolly, I only have cheapo crappy ones, so they are obviously not ideal, but better than nothing I would have though?? She hasn't been to the toilet once today, so I think she really needs something!

She looks so pale!

(I am meant to be at a lovely wedding with champagne, and I have a lovely new dress and shoes and bag and necklace, which will all be unworn.....sigh.....)

Flat full fat coke is another great thing to give a child when they have been repeatedly sick (my dr told me this)
Apparently all the horrid sugars, salts and minerals replace those lost.

AimsmumPaPumPumMeAndMyDrum · 22/12/2007 20:49

I heard this about full fat flat coke.

I bought a small bottle at 10am this morning and have tried everything to make it go flat, it is still fizzy!! So haven't given her any!!! Any ideas for a quick way to make it go flat??

Shake it (with the lid on {fgrin]) and then leave it with the lid off so the bubbles rise, pop and let the gas out.

Sorry to hear about dd - you are living my biggest nightmare! Hope you're all better by Tuesday.

bb xx

dingdongbelgianbunsonhigh · 22/12/2007 20:53

Oh bum !

AimsmumPaPumPumMeAndMyDrum · 22/12/2007 21:02

I have been doing the shaking every half hour of so, but almost 12 hours later it is still crazy fizzy!!! I'm going to try to get her into bed soon, so it may be fizz-free in the morning!

It would have been my biggest fear at one point too, so I know what you mean!!

Fingers crossed we are germ free for Tuesday (well tomorrow preferably!!!)

Aimsmum - hope I am not too late - you need to STIR the coke with a teaspoon, not frantically, but keep stirring a samll glassful until it flattens - takes a couple of minutes. IT does work (make her sip it) as it is close to the same chemical formula as Dioralyte and my ds was in ICU with dehydration when hospital gave it to him for that very reason.

well I'll take that coke tip then dd1 being sick here too, sigh....

Sexmasonlegs · 22/12/2007 21:24

Grim isn't it. Flat tonic water is supposed to be good too - something to do with the quinnine (sp) in it which settles tummies.

Off to bed soon as not sure what night we will get!

Hope everyone is ok by the morning. x

AimsmumPaPumPumMeAndMyDrum · 22/12/2007 21:29

I shall remember that if it is still needed tomorrow (hope it won't be!! )

Thank you!

someone told me a pinch of salt in a bottle of coke makes it go flat.

I have poorly dd today - raging temp, flu-y, red face, sore eyes, sick but only once. Last Saturday DS was sick every half an hour all day so i feel your pain.

AimsmumPaPumPumMeAndMyDrum · 22/12/2007 22:26

It's a nightmare isn't it!

I hope your dd is feeling a bit better in the morning too!

DD has been asleep on the sofa for the past hour, i am too scared to move her in case it starts her off again, but really should! I will soon

KbearingGiftsWeTraverseAfar · 23/12/2007 08:21

How is she today Aimsmum? My DD has been coughing all night and her chest hurts but the flu-like symptons seem to have eased so (fingers crossed) she will only improve now. I have never seen her look so ill, she's the healthy one in the bear house!

AimsmumPaPumPumMeAndMyDrum · 23/12/2007 11:09

Glad to hear your DD seems to be on the mend!

DD slept all night, and isn't long wakened, she says she feels fine and she certainly looks a lot better, so she is just having some toast now, so fingers crossed it will stay down!!

Thanks for asking!

Hopefully we will all have a healthy christmas!

My ds had temp a few weeks ago and GP actually reccomended ice lollies.

fondant4000 · 24/12/2007 11:12

Plain water (especially cold) can def make you feel sick. Salty things (like chips) are easier to eat when you're ill.

My mum (nurse) used to give us flat lemonade. It's also a useful tip for morning sickness! When we were off school sick she used to give us flat lemonade, crisps and oranges. Mind you, she hardly ever let us stay off school

AimsmumPaPumPumMeAndMyDrum · 24/12/2007 11:31

Thanks both, she is back to refusing anything again!

I really feel bad for her. Will try to tempt her with either an ice lolly or some crisps!!!

DumbledoreWithBoughsOfHolly · 24/12/2007 11:56

Aimsmum, you and me both. My dd was sick last night. Fortunately only twice and she has now eaten some toast and looks much better, but what a time of year for illness eh? We are supposed to be going to a big family get together for 3 days at my parents' house today, but I don't know if we will be able to now.... Actually, dd just walked past as I typed, looking absolutely normal so maybe later today...

Don't force your dd with anything. I always wait until they ask for something before giving. Mind you.... your dd sound sicker than mine.

AimsmumPaPumPumMeAndMyDrum · 24/12/2007 12:15

It's awful isn't it!

Glad to hear your DD seems a bit better, how are you doing?

I hope you will be able to make it to your family get together!

DD is still being sick hourly or more often, she has also been crying and saying that she wants to start feeling better for tomorrow. I feel so sorry for her, she looks so ill.

I have managed to get her to take sips of blackcurrant juice by putting it in a wine glass!? Because I am sure she must be a bit dehydrated.

Who was it that was saying the other day that Christmas should be in the summer.....

OP posts:
DumbledoreWithBoughsOfHolly · 24/12/2007 13:23

I am not great, as you might expect. More because I am wondering if the others will get it next, rather than because last night was so bad.

Your dd does sound really bad. I don't want to panic you, but would you consider ringing a doctor? Sickness shouldn't go on this much should it?

AimsmumPaPumPumMeAndMyDrum · 24/12/2007 14:06

I know what you mean, hopefully it will be a one off and you will have a germ free christmas.

She hasn't been sick for a few hours now (well 2 but that is good) she had a little bit of diarrhoea now, so i am hoping that will be the end of the sickness.

She has kept down some juice and medised too so fingers crossed.

I thought about trying to get an appointment, but this is pretty much the norm with dd when she gets a stomach bug, sadly, I was at A&E loads with her when she was little, but as long as she is taking fluid i will try to play be ear at home! Sigh!

OP posts:
DumbledoreWithBoughsOfHolly · 24/12/2007 15:18

About to go off to my family now Aimsmum, and will be internet free for the next few days, but here's hoping your dd is better in time to enjoy tomorrow. Happy Christmas.

sarahhal · 24/12/2007 15:24

I'll come and join you Dumbledoresgirl and AImsmum - DS had this and ended up in hospital with suspected appendicitis Our main concern though was the pain in his stomach, which they think is enlarged glands due to a viral infection.

Aimsmum - we were at a wedding on Saturday when we got called home to take DS to hospital! At least I got to wear my new dress for a few hours and have a glass of champagne and most importantly see my friend get married.

I hope the coke has worked - I gave some to DS this morning as he has only being drinking water for three days. I knew I had read somewhere it is good for upset stomachs. As usual, DH knew otherwise
