Cerazette - anyone else had problems with this contraceptive?

I started taking Cerazette after I had dd2 almost 4yrs ago. I had to go back on the pill because my periods were horrendous. I didn't want to go on a normal pill so went on to Cerazette which is a mini-pill.

I started on the pill and I had bleed after bleed - no breaks and it was really getting me down. The Dr suggested I took 2 pills per day, which is perfectly safe, and that stopped my periods altogether. This I did up until September when I decided to try going back down to 1 pill per day. I was fine until about a month ago when my boobs became extremely sore and then almost 2 weeks I started a period. I am still bleeding now although not at all heavy but still bleeding nevertheless. I saw my GP again during the week with my dd who was poorly and mentioned the situation with the pill to him and he told me to go back onto 2 pills per day and we'd review my options of what pills are around in the New Year.

Anyone else had problems with this pill? What bugs me is for years before I had dd2 I didn't go on the pill and had many years of normal very regular periods that only lasted 5 days!

Yip - I had problems with this pill! Unlike you, my periods stopped completely! I wasn't comfortable with this so I stopped taking it. Before that I was on another mini-pill (forgot what it was called) and wit that one, I had a period twice a month and was never regular! Since stopping the pill, my periods seem to be getting back to normal.

I am taking Cerazette, and for the first 2 months, I had very irregular & long periods, but last month I didn't bleed at all (although experienced period cramps.) I think, from what I've heard, that it is very common to have these kinds of problems with this pill.
My sister has been on it for years, and gets no periods at all.

whispywhisp · 21/12/2007 14:07

Hi and thanks for your replies!

When I take 2 a day I don't get periods - I took 2 a day for almost 2 yrs. I wasn't happy (believe it or not!) not having a period because it didn't feel normal so I went down to 1 a day. Now I've had this period for almost 2 weeks and boy is it getting me down!

I can't work out how I can be in this state when before I had dd2 my periods were so regular and not the slightest bit heavy.

After I had her my periods were so bed (pre-cerazette) - I'd go to the bathroom and by the time I'd got to the bottom of the stairs my tampon would be soaked through and I'd be leaking. It got so bad I lived upstairs for a while so to be near the bathroom. I went to the drs who referred me to the hosp and they did an internal scan and all was ok - so having a baby has really messed up my periods.

Roll on 'the change'.....only another 10 yrs to wait.

My periods were always 5 days long, with around 2 heavy days, then getting lighter & lighter. My periods since taking this pill however, would last way over a week, with no signs of getting lighter, and would really get me down. They were like this for the first 2 months, then last month I skipped my period altogether.

whispywhisp · 21/12/2007 14:14

Right - so I need to be patient then? x

I think it is normal for periods to be all over the place with this pill. I understand totally how much these never ending periods get you down though - I started a couple of threads on the subject myself!

Pinkchampagne · 21/12/2007 14:19

Have to go to doctors later today for a pill check, and will be mentioning the changes in my cycles. I will let you know what he says!

ninewurlysdancing · 21/12/2007 14:19

I have been on it for a few months and have had no bleed at all, infact I have to keep doing pregnancy tests as i'm convinved i'm pregnant.

CremolaFirCone · 21/12/2007 14:20

Had to give it up too.Periods all over the shop- 1 lasted 6 weeks. Also hair started to pull out.
was put on it to help cope with anaemia and heavy periods -so No result there.

Pinkchampagne · 21/12/2007 14:21

Oh my goodness, CremolaFirCone!

CremolaFirCone · 21/12/2007 14:32

yes back to condoms here.
i also have PMDD and found that the cerazette made it worse too.Just take AD's now and am on the list for a hysterectomy.

LaDiDancesroundtheXmastree · 21/12/2007 14:34

I was on it after I had dd and had no periods for about 12-15months then started to get very frequent spotting. I have a friend who bled continously.

Charlene1 · 21/12/2007 14:37

I have taken this for a year - I am not taking any more after this packet.
I have put on 2 stone, despite Slimming World / general dieting and exercise; have horrendous spots on face/back/arms etc.
Joints ache and I feel like I'm 90.
But I have no periods or PMT any more, so I am scared about coming off it in case I get painful heavy periods as before. Where I work, we have one toilet downstairs, so people will know if I am rushing out all the time to deal with it etc - stupid I know, but I feel embarassed about it - and I'm 33!!!
If I miss or am late taking a pill, I have skin eruptions, headaches, itchy red arms etc. It stops within 2 hrs of taking the pill.
It can't be doing me any good!!

Pinkchampagne · 21/12/2007 14:45

Blimey, that's not good! Luckily I haven't noticed any side effects other than messed up periods.

Pinkchampagne · 21/12/2007 18:19

Saw doctor, and she said that changes with bleeding are very common on this pill, and 70-80% of women taking this pill, end up having no periods at all. She said that it was very likely that as I didn't have a period last month, it would probably stay that way.
She said that some women experience bleeding problems on this pill, and will bleed for weeks and weeks, but this is often as your body adjusts to the pill. She said that it would normally have settled within 3 months if it was going to.

whispywhisp · 21/12/2007 19:49

Hi all and thanks for all your very interesting replies!

I've been on this pill for quite a while so I'm guessing its going to take time for me to settle back down on it again. It's just that this particular period I have at the moment started over a week ago - was pretty heavy to start with and then lightened up and now it feels like I've got a second period without a break.

I've actually heard/read nothing good said about this pill.

Do any of you make sure you take it at exactly the right time each day? Is there a window - ie within a set time? I'm just wondering if I ought to look at that because some mornings I take it when I wake up (6am) and other mornings it may be nearer 9am. Would that make any difference?

No, you have 12 hours to take this pill!!

Pinkchampagne · 22/12/2007 10:40

The nurse told me that stress can bring on spotting with this pill.

Pinkchampagne · 22/12/2007 10:42

Apparently it is a very good pill if it works for you, as it is the only mini pill which also stops ovulation, so is more effective than the others.

awayinNaeManger · 22/12/2007 10:45

i was on this pill and my record was 18 days of bleeding.
so glad to hear that i;m not alone.

Pinkchampagne · 22/12/2007 10:47

Did your periods stop altogether after a while?

awayinNaeManger · 22/12/2007 15:18

no. i stopped taking the pills. coudln't deal with having 1 period free week a month.

Pinkchampagne · 22/12/2007 16:34

Don't blame you, I would do the same!

whispywhisp · 22/12/2007 18:53

Oh well stress may have something to do with the fact I've still got a period, almost 2 weeks old. My eldest dd had a spell in hospital when I started this period - she was very poorly - we had to get an ambulance etc.

Whilst my monthly isn't that heavy it is still with me and it is really making me miserable.

ALomonderfulLife · 22/12/2007 22:34

I was on it for a few months and couldn't stick it as I was bleeding constantly, no break from it. It was getting me down so I changed back to my old pill.

I think it is very common.
