Dependent Drinkers and Alcoholics (recovering or active) Support Thread II?

1000 replies

kokeshi · 28/11/2007 12:14

Welcome to the thread, the purpose of this is to give anyone, who is having any trouble with their drinking, to come and post about it honestly and without judgement.

There are many of us that use the thread for support and encouragement: some in recovery, others just needing a place to share about their worries. It's been going on in one form of another for a while now and has helped many people.

Everybody's welcome, no matter what stage your drinking is at.

Jump right in, the water's fine

I think we do go through phases we we swap one 'crutch' for another, and caffeine and nicotine are the most common ones to replace alcohol. Other people seem to develop a bit of a sugar addiction when they stop drinking, which I believe is something to do with inherent sugar-sensitivity that exists in many alcoholics.

I've heard it put like this: "deal with your addictions in the order that they will kill you".

HBB, alcohol prevents the absorption of these vitamins so even if you take the heavy duty ones, you won't feel the benefit until you stop drinking. Kind of a waste of money I think?

Hi everyone.

Hi BM- i like Kokeshi's term of man-smuggery!
PMT is horrible, I hate feeling so angry and out of control.

If I have a cup of tea late at night I can't sleep- if I have too much caffeine during the day I feel quite odd and shaky, not very pleasant.

Its really great to see so many posts today.
Well done Justwater!

Hi to everyone else.

kokeshi · 16/01/2008 14:35

I think £6.99 for a month's supply is nothing compared to what we'd spend in a on drink in the same period. I was prescribed separate vitamin B1 (thiamine) as well as the strong complex by the GP...which you get for the price of a prescription if that's any better?

kokeshi · 16/01/2008 14:51

LOL @ man smuggery. It will last until I offer some nice food

Sorry to fill the thread with my rants. I'll try and be brave and post in other topics from now on. I'm not going to drink on this so it's not relevant. It's just so easy to type it out on here without having to go into the background of why he's here.

Glad to see the thread so active anyway. Getting on with some work now...

kokeshi · 16/01/2008 15:00

Ooh that works on so many levels.

justwaterformethanks · 16/01/2008 16:09

I gave up fire juggling whilst pole dancing to take up blindfolded whitewater rafting ! legless motercycle act sounds fantastic ,youre a fantastically clever and brave paraplegic ( thats what you meant isnt it ?)

justwaterformethanks · 16/01/2008 16:11

if i spilt any parafin on my patsies they just slid off ,which rather spoiled the part where i twizzled them in opposite directions

kokeshi · 16/01/2008 16:51

Aksherly, the basis of that is that I almost DID lose my leg in Taiwan in an RTC whilst I was drunk riding a motorbike.

Legless/legless...geddit? I gave that up pretty quickly, it impeded my ability to otherwise get to the off-licence, and having no legs would have been most inconvenient for my alcohol seeking requirements at the time.

Flippin heck ,you came so close to marrying a beatle !!! < slinks off whilst wondering what social outcasts do all day>

kokeshi · 16/01/2008 17:58

Oh ha! I just got the HMMcC reference! I still have mine attached thankfully, which is worth more to me than obtaining Paul's substantial assets to be honest!

Do you feel like a social outcast, seriously? You seem really bubbly, can't see why that would be? Hope you're finding today manageable.

What's going on for everyone else?

no i dont feel like a social outcast ,just worried incase the heather mccartney reference was too below the belt ! Although i swear a woman pointed at me in m&s yesterday and said 'look at the state of that ' to her friend ,I hope she was pointing at a dispaly behind me with a particularly lovely breast milk rice pudding skirt on it

justwaterformethanks · 16/01/2008 18:09

just curious kokeshi how long have you been sober? you can tell me to naff off if you like

kokeshi · 16/01/2008 18:31

No, I got the HMMcC ref. She's think skinned IMO! Well, Let's see. Sobriety...it's taken me a while and a few extra periods of 'research', but it's been quite a few days-in-a-row now. Seriously though, although I think it's important at the beginning of sobriety to count the days, and they make quite a fuss of you if you goto AA and celebrate milestones...24 hours, one week, one month 3 months, a year etc, but as you go on I think the time is not so important as what you do with it. One thing I do want to stress is that no matter how long I am sober, all I have is the same as everyone else...the day in hand.

I'm being evasive here aren't I? I'll tell you when I see you in an AA meeting

OP posts:
kokeshi · 16/01/2008 18:39

Oh I meant to add that after a while of continuous days in a row, it's surprising to realise you do actually stop counting. I was obsessed with all things drink, I dreamt, breathed and lived for it. I never thought it could be any different.

Just off to an AA meeting just now. Have a good evening everyone.

OP posts:
kokeshi · 17/01/2008 00:09

It's been quite quiet this evening, hope everyone is OK?

OP posts:
PurpleOne · 17/01/2008 00:32

I'm off work tomrrow and going to another AA meeting.

*fingers in ears about God / spiritual stuff

La di dah di dah LOL I need anther kick up the arse here.

I'm really battling hard, even got a bottle of vodka in but haven't opened it yet?

kokeshi · 17/01/2008 00:46

PurpleOne, you are wiccan right? Is that not spiritual? Do you not do blessings and believe hence in a power greater than yourself? That's all it is. That seems like a Higher Power you do believe in, and I think you're in a better position therefore than a great deal of people who come into AA with NO beliefs at all.

Chuck the vodka, what else are you going to do with it except get hammered? It seems to me, from here, if you're buying spirits your drinking is progressing again. A sure sign that you're not able to 'control it' and therefore a pretty good candidate for AA after all?

AA doesn't teach controlled drinking either so we all need to be honest with ourselves if we're going to stand a chance.

I wish you well and really hope you get it soon.
