WTF has happened, my arse has exploded

This was totally unexpected. I took a glycerin suppository yesterday evening, as I’ve done several times (couple of times a month). I’m dieting so get a tiny bit constipated, and it helps shift things along. Usually have no issues at all.

Well I woke up in the early hours and it all exploded. Wind, awful tummy pains, massive bouts of normal poo but this got increasingly runny, ended up with liquid diarrhoea. Thought I was going to throw up but managed not to.

This morning there was no more poo (I must’ve lost pounds Shock) but I noticed quite a lot of bright red blood, a bit mucousy. Tummy still really sore and still feel like I need to go and should be straining.

Is this a bug? Some weird reaction to the suppository? They’re supposed to be mild! I do have small piles so maybe these got irritated. Have taken paracetamol which has helped a bit. Bleeding has stopped. Should I be doing anything else?

Bit scared tbh!

Actually since last night when I wipe there is a bit of blood. Not much but some. And the entrance is a bit sore and itchy. Maybe it’s piles (I do have some small ones, found 8 years ago).

I am now less worried about the blood, and more worried where all the poo is!

Right I’ve added duclolax to my cocktail of project shift it. Supposed to take it and let it work overnight, but pharmacist said ok to take in the day if you’re at home. Something’s gotta happen!

On Friday I had to take the full eight sachets of Movicol in a litre of water as I was in bloody agony. Sympathies.

I'm on long-term codeine so it's a constant problem - you can't just eat your way out of it.

I think your diet sounds ok, @Lemons1571 - unless your meal deal is three packets of club biscuits for the price of two or something.

Just be careful with the laxative use, though - you can end up with a sluggish bowel and get into a horrible vicious circle and start damaging things.

Lemons1571 · 26/07/2021 20:07

God nothings working. Tried again, and just got a really sticky dark red substance come out. I’ve really irritated something up there. Getting stressed about it all now. Day 5 nearly over. Please god let something happen on day 6.

So miserable now.

I think you'd better ring 111 for advice soon. That doesn't sound good.

SisterMonicaJoansHabit · 26/07/2021 20:24

I'd call 111. I suffer with symptoms like yours on and off, mine is a mix of inflammation, piles, ibs, lactose intolerance and constipation from lots of meds I take daily.

But you've now got sticky dark red.

Lemons1571 · 26/07/2021 20:35

Yes. It’s not mixed in with poo though.

The massive bout of diarrhoea and nausea in the middle of last week was a totally normal colour. It was only right at the end of the diarrhoea that this gloopy blood started to show. What I saw just now looked the same but older, hence darker.

OP when you talk to the medical professionals, ask them to point you at a web page or something with the current dietary advice. IANAD but I did notice that you mentioned neither fruit nor vegetables and my impression was that this is supposed to make up the major part of a healthy diet - but the medical pros are best placed to discuss food advice, I'm just a rando on the internet ;)

Lemons1571 · 02/08/2021 10:56

Totally fed up of this now. Constipation since last Tuesday, apart from a couple of small pebbles at the weekend. Have been on a high dose of movicol, psyllium, tonnes of water, prune juice - and nothing.

Took one dulcolax yesterday afternoon. Zero effect! Have just taken another one as am near a loo all day.

GP asked for a sample, just because of the bleeding (nearly 2 weeks ago now). The practice just phoned up asking why I hadn’t handed it in. Hand what in! Nothings coming out!! I daren’t do a suppository again, that was a nightmare.

Why can’t my body just poo every day or two Sad, hell I’d take every third day over this.

OP this sounds awful for you Sadcall GP again and say you can't provide a sample because you haven't been and ask what the next step is

SpindleWhorl · 04/08/2021 01:09

God that's awful - it has to be faecal impaction and you need to tell the GP how bad it is, and that you've taken all the recommended high doses of all the recommended laxatives numerous times and you're still impacted, and that you now need medical assistance.

GiantToadstool · 04/08/2021 01:35

Ianad but I think you need to see someone. Good luck.

Notebooksarefabulous · 04/08/2021 02:11

Movicol, psyllium husk, Calfig, prunes, fresh fruit - pears in particular. Lots of water. Beer is a surprisingly good option.

Avoid anything with Senna - duclolax, sennakot. Its habit forming. You innards begin to need it and then wont work well at all anymore.

Ive struggled (but am now winning!) with constipation for 5 years - Ive never needed to even think of suppositries though, sounds grim.

Make sure that whilst you are trying to shift it - dont eat anything that wont help - ie no chips, no eggs, no junk at all. Every mouthful counts when this bunged up. When you do finally start going - dont celebrate with junk or relax the routine.........keep going, keep taking the meds cos it will take several weeks to get more regular again.

Having scrolled up and had another look at what you've said op.......... I agree its fecal impaction - the diarrhea you had was a desparate bid by your body to shift the backlog. The nausea could also be due to you being so full of poo.

FATEdestiny · 04/08/2021 02:33

Do you exercise? A run, even just 1 mile, never fails to shift my poo.

I appreciate that running now while heavily constipated won't be possible, but worth considering as a way to keep things moving once you do clear the blockage.

Lemons1571 · 05/08/2021 17:38

It’s all swung the other way now and I have diarrhoea! Every time I wee! No blood and it’s normal colour, not dark. I think the combination of laxatives / food / psyllium must have finally worked. I was on the max dose of all of it, so am now halving that and see if it all gets a bit firmer. Trying to find a happy medium.

I do feel better though, not so bunged up.

Stool test result not back yet.

Lemons1571 · 05/08/2021 17:38

Yep walking an average of 10k steps a day.

OP posts:
Fadeout83 · 06/08/2021 12:15

Yikes OP, sounds like a bloody nightmare excuse the pun. Hopefully the stool sample will reveal something. Constipation is the absolute pits.

WinoLino · 26/08/2021 23:50

How are you now @Lemons1571? Did you get the results back?

Lemons1571 · 27/08/2021 07:39

Yes @WinoLino the result was fine so no further action. Presume it was the haemorroids acting up or a fissure.

It has all calmed down a lot, but I am still on a very low dose of movicol and some psyllium. Hoping to get rid of this completely once we’re in a routine in September but am a bit scared!
