WTF has happened, my arse has exploded

This was totally unexpected. I took a glycerin suppository yesterday evening, as I’ve done several times (couple of times a month). I’m dieting so get a tiny bit constipated, and it helps shift things along. Usually have no issues at all.

Well I woke up in the early hours and it all exploded. Wind, awful tummy pains, massive bouts of normal poo but this got increasingly runny, ended up with liquid diarrhoea. Thought I was going to throw up but managed not to.

This morning there was no more poo (I must’ve lost pounds Shock) but I noticed quite a lot of bright red blood, a bit mucousy. Tummy still really sore and still feel like I need to go and should be straining.

Is this a bug? Some weird reaction to the suppository? They’re supposed to be mild! I do have small piles so maybe these got irritated. Have taken paracetamol which has helped a bit. Bleeding has stopped. Should I be doing anything else?

Bit scared tbh!

Not sure if this is relevant, but my abdomen is now also much softer and flatter than it was before the suppository? Would that indicate constipation?

I have had a tummy bug with sudden rushes to the loo and waves of nausea. It is very intermittent which is odd! Hope you're ok again soon

Lemons1571 · 22/07/2021 14:05

Ugh, just went to the toilet and some wind and watery blood came out (thought it was a bit of diarrhoea but no poo to be seen).

Less blood than first thing this morning though. Not quite so thick and gloopy. Still bright red / watery pink.

It feels like inflammation….

If you are taking laxatives a lot you may be causing some irritation in the bowel.

More likely though is that it's a bug. I've heard that norovirus is going round atm.

How would a bit of glycerin affect the bowel? It just softens what’s in the rectum.
Spodge · 22/07/2021 17:11

Blood and mucus would suggest a bug to me.

Midnightballerina · 22/07/2021 17:19

If you're worried I would suggest talkng to a health professional would be more helpful than posting on mumsnet.

Starlitexpress · 22/07/2021 17:24

I had this and tested positive for covid. Actually listed as a symptom, not that you'd know and I had no cough!

Megasausagehead · 22/07/2021 17:30

Definitely a bug.

Has irritated your bowel lining, hence blood. It will be ok in a few days.

If not, see the gp.

SinkGirl · 22/07/2021 17:30

I would speak to a GP.

I use glycerine suppositories fairly regularly as I’m on longterm opiates. Have never had bleeding even when things have been very bad.

Paws,
Didn't realise it was glycerin. I seen laxatives and my brain automatically went to dulcolax, sorry Blush

Noterook · 22/07/2021 17:50

Do people usually bleed when they have a stomach bug? Confused

It sounds suspicious timing if you had used a suppository beforehand, I would see how it goes but get checked out if it continues, and maybe eat more fibre.

Lemons1571 · 22/07/2021 18:28

I feel a bit more settled, the awful painful wind has abated for the most part. The bleeding and “windy liquid” has also died down. Any blood on the toilet paper now looks like piles / fissures rather than a full on bleed.

I am hoping that never happens again! I checked the use by date on the suppositories and they are in date.

@Starlitexpress did you have the bleeding and inflammation?

OP posts:
Starlitexpress · 22/07/2021 18:43

Rampant liquid diarrhea every 4 hours which just got redder. Don't remember any inflammation.

HighNetGirth · 22/07/2021 19:28

Are you drinking enough water? Make sure you have some regularly throughout the day. And something like Inulin, psyllium husk or oat bran in your diet every day will be a better bet than using suppositories, probably.

Lemons1571 · 22/07/2021 19:35

Am going to try and get some psyllium husk tomorrow

OP posts:
Lemons1571 · 24/07/2021 23:10

Well it’s nearly 3 days later, and I haven’t had a poo or any bleeding in all that time. The pain is nearly gone. My intestines are making really loud gurgling noises though.

Now what? I’m hoping I’m not back to constipation. I started psyllium husk yesterday and am drinking lots. I’m getting worried about never pooing again!!

DH had explosive runs and wind this morning. Wonder if it’s connected / a bug? Not sure about all the blood that came out of me though, that’s the unnerving bit. If it was something sinister would it bleed regularly / without irritation from a suppository?

You have probably already tried it but my dc has a bottle of prune juice we give him as he suffers from constipation. Let's just say he doesn't suffer after the has it!

Lemons1571 · 26/07/2021 07:33

I’ve now tried prune juice, movicol, tons of water, more prune juice, payllium, all bran, herbal tea. Over 4 days now without a poo. Starting to wonder if I’ll ever poo again. Where is it all?

What have you eaten on a typical day?

LetterOfTheLawFella · 26/07/2021 08:03

@Lemons1571 have you taken a covid test yet?

Lemons1571 · 26/07/2021 08:38

@MistySkiesAfterRain typically small bowl cereal in morning, meal deal type lunch, and protein salad for dinner (ham, egg etc). Though had large fish n chips on Saturday and no sign of that yet!

Covid negative.

OP posts:
Lemons1571 · 26/07/2021 08:42

Just necked another movicol and psyllium tablet.
