Really not feeling like myself and feeling very ill

I am 26 and a mum to an 8 month old. I am really struggling with eating. I feel sick when I eat and feel better if I force it down. I then feel better for about half an hour and then feel sick again. I'm exhausted. I know I'm a mum to a little one but this is beyond exhaustion. I could nap all day and still sleep all night. I can actually feel my eyes shutting when I'm changing her nappy. I'm constantly thirsty. And all I want is sugar. Orange juice or full sugar cola.
I took a pregnancy test on the off chance and both came back negative. I had a period 10 days ago so I'm thinking that's very unlikely.
I rang the doctors who told me no appointments because of covid and if I'm worried to call 111.
I dont think it's an out of hours gp thing. It doesn't feel like a hospital thing. It's been going on for 5 days. And I'm starting to worry

There was nobody even listening to you OP. You need to absolutely lambaste that Doctor and the practice when you have the strength to do it .He has failed miserably. Wishing you a speedy recovery .

StCharlotte · 23/04/2021 08:18

Sorry to hear your diagnosis but glad you're feeling better.

Notwithstanding the actions - or inactions - of your GP practice, diabetes is something the NHS handles absolutely brilliantly. There are so many resources available.

Good luck Flowers

mermaidsariel · 23/04/2021 08:33

Please write a letter to your practice manager when you feel better and make a complaint. It’s dreadful your doctor wouldn’t see you.

Alonelonelylonersbadidea · 23/04/2021 08:33

Oh wow I was so stressed for you. I am so glad to see that you have your diagnosis, hard though that is.
You'll get lots of support. When the hospital gets your paperwork to your GP there should be a lot of shame on their side and contact with an apology!

dottiedaisee · 23/04/2021 08:42

Am glad you are getting sorted . It really is shocking that GPS are so difficult to see . It’s also shocking, but thank God that random people on the internet basically diagnosed your diabetes and thankfully encouraged you to go to AE. I am sure you will start to feel a lot better with your BS levels improving. Good luck OP and definitely a very stiff complaint needs to be made to the Practice manager!💐

ChairmansReserve · 23/04/2021 08:46

I am glad to hear you sought help and have a diagnosis. That's a big thing to deal with but you are over the worst now and I wish you all the best for the future.

supermodel · 23/04/2021 08:53

So glad you went in and you should definitely complain to the GP.

Tigertigertigertiger · 23/04/2021 08:53

Best wishes to you op
What a great example of the good that mumsnet can do .

Please please take this up with your gp

GPs are getting paid throughout this pandemic
You may have encountered an over zealous receptionist and the doctors will want to be aware of that.

eurochick · 23/04/2021 08:56

Disgraceful behaviour from your GP. I'm glad you are getting the care you need now.

Tambourina · 23/04/2021 09:01

Thanks Get well soon OP.

And take time for yourself to learn to manage the diabetes really well.

Train your DH too so that he can support you. In that way your quality of life going forward can be excellent.

PivotPivotPivottt · 23/04/2021 09:01

So glad you went to A&E and now you know what's wrong. Absolutely disgusting that the GP refused to see you. I've heard of this happening to a lot of people including children. I must be really lucky as my surgery seem to be running well and I've managed to get both my children seen the same day I've called for minor stuff. Definite complain you could have slipped into a diabetic coma if you hadn't gone to A&E.

MMMarmite · 23/04/2021 09:03

So glad you're safe and have an answer OP. I have friends with diabetes, there's a lot to learn but it's a very manageable condition, and the treatments are advancing all the time.

Notavegan · 23/04/2021 09:04

I'm sorry op. Focus on you for now, then a complaint for sure once you are feeling stronger.
What a lot to take in. Flowers

MMMarmite · 23/04/2021 09:06

And yes, well done to all the posters who immediately suggested diabetes, and did a better job than your doctor surgery! Shock

ShrinkingViolet9 · 23/04/2021 09:08

I assume you were triaged by a receptionist when you phoned your GP practice?

Constant thirst should have red flagged for diabetes. At the very least, a GP should have requested blood tests and/or asked for a urine sample to be dropped off at the surgery for a dip stick test.

Appalling service from your GP practice.

Blacktothepink · 23/04/2021 09:10

Type 1 diabetic here. What are your blood glucose levels and blood ketones? Do you have IV hydration and are you in DKA?

Vickles20 · 23/04/2021 09:12

Bravo OP. And Bravo Mumsnetters!!! FlowersCakeDaffodilWineStarBrew

r0ck · 23/04/2021 09:13

I was just writing to say your symptoms sound exactly like my husband before he got admitted to hospital and diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. I hope you're OK, it's quite an adjustment but there's lots of good resources and support out there for T1 Diabetics, and new ways of managing it coming on board- Partha Kar (national lead for diabetes) is IMO pretty amazing about getting t1 Diabetics the support they need to help them manage their condition.

Amdone123 · 23/04/2021 09:14

So glad you're being seen to, op. Just rest. I know you're missing your girl but think of it that you're getting better. And you need to be better to care for her.
My sister is going through something similar with her gp. Just been covid excuses all the way.

RampantIvy · 23/04/2021 09:16

Thank goodness you went to A & E when you did. Hospitals usually know which GP practices are good and which ones have lazy doctors, and I'm sure your practice will be added to the lazy doctors list.

I agree that you need to write to the practice manager and maybe the NHS in your area. Keep it factual.

Ohpulltheotherone · 23/04/2021 09:18

So glad you’re OK OP, that’s really scary.

I am so mad at these sodding GPs who are still using covid as an excuse not to do face to face.

Pleaded you are OK, keep well Flowers

LizzieSiddal · 23/04/2021 09:20

So glad you are in hospital and getting proper treatment. Flowers

As others have said please make a complaint to your Dr. If you can’t face doing it get your DH to write the letter. This dr should be ashamed of themselves, dismissing you with the symptoms you had.

cuparfull · 23/04/2021 09:33

@Trunkysbun

Glad you have a diagnosis and a reason for feeling so ill. I hope you feel loads better soon.

It's disgraceful that you couldn't get into your GP.

Exactly this....

How many people are lacking adequate GP care atm? It's very worrying and there's just NO reason they should not now start getting back to a normal service.
Our GP's have just informed us that in the future they are doing telephone appointments only! So a receptionist is to make the decision on how urgent any callbacks from a GP will be. As a nurse I despair.
GP's are looking to reduce the one to one patient contact permanently I fear.

Your condition OP, had all the classic symptoms of diabetes, lethargy, excessive thirst, peeing all the time. The sickness and faintness start with really high blood sugars.
An idiot could have diagnosed this and your GP has been negligent.

CeibaTree · 23/04/2021 09:35

Gosh what a terrible time you've had - it makes me so mad how women are dismissed by GPs often, especially if they are new mothers, so much gets blamed on being post-partum. I'm sorry you've been diagnosed with type 1, that must have been a real shock, but I'm glad you've got a quick diagnosis and it's a well-researched and managed condition. Hope you can go home to your baby soon x

feathersandferns · 23/04/2021 09:43

This thread has made me feel a bit teary - bless you OP, I'm so glad you trusted your gut (and Mumsnet!) and went off to A&E. Definitely feed back to your GP surgery - as your symptoms were so strongly leaning towards diabetes that a load of posters could armchair diagnose you over the internet, I don't know WHAT your surgery was thinking. Sending hugs and I hope you feel much better soon x
