Hi
My doc is sending me for an internal scan to check out my womb/cervix etc and im really worried!

Does it hurt? Can anyone let me know what it is like?

thanks

It doesn't hurt, it's much like a normal ultrasound. The probe isn't very big, and they use lots of lube.

mad4mybaby · 04/11/2007 19:38

thanks for quick response! I went for my smear (overdue by 2 years!) first after having my son last year and it was agony! They are only supposed to be uncomfortable! Im quite new.. can you get any sort of alert to let you know you have replys? Or do you have to keep checking....

It's fine.

I've had a couple and you don't really feel much.. the thingy they put up you is very narrow, and they always use plenty of lubricant.

Give me an internal scan over a smear test any day!

But good luck anyway. It'll be fine.

tassisssss · 04/11/2007 19:39

i've had one

didn't hurt

good luck!

goingfor3 · 04/11/2007 19:39

The probe is thin and they do use it gently, much easier than having a smear.

TotalChaos · 04/11/2007 19:43

I've had it, it's absolutely fine. And you don't need a full bladder for it!

mad4mybaby · 04/11/2007 19:43

guys thanks so much! This was my first thread that i started! I wasnt expecting a response, well not today anyway! It feels like I have a bunch of new friends! Does anyone have any answers about my Q above? About if you can get an alert when you get a response?

No, there is no alert - you have to keep checking. Although you can look at the "Threads I'm on" at the top of the page if you have a number of convos going.

I've had over 50 internal ultrasounds. Piece of cake in comparison with smear tests. If you wear a skirt then you don't have to get undressed, just take your knickers off.

easy - sausage like smooth plastic probe - lots of lube - no violation.

Best wishes

x

Boogalooblue · 04/11/2007 19:46

Just to warn you, the probe looks a bit like a phallus and they cover it in what appears to be a condom.

I too have hundreds of these internals and t'is true, they are fine.

Don't panic

JodieG1 · 04/11/2007 19:46

Doesn't hurt at all, I've had quite a few in the past.

mad4mybaby · 04/11/2007 19:48

boogalooblue.. whats a 'phallus'??

OP posts:
MerlinsBeard · 04/11/2007 19:48

no pain but what sticks in my mind is that it was COLD !

BBBee · 04/11/2007 19:49

phallus = penis or cock or dick

kittycrackles · 04/11/2007 19:50

I've had a few and they've never hurt. Good luck

mad4mybaby · 04/11/2007 19:52

oh!! Sorry bbbee.. I didnt know that was how it was spelt (blush) why have so many of you had loads of them (if that isnt too personal?) I didnt even know you could do them inside!

OP posts:
Bluestocking · 04/11/2007 19:52

I've only had the one but it didn't hurt at all. Try not to worry!

Bluestocking · 04/11/2007 19:53

I had one because I had a bit of a bleed at seven weeks and the sonographer couldn't pick up any sign of the pregnancy from outside. She got a good look at the beanie with the internal probe though, and he's now 3.7!

BBBee · 04/11/2007 19:54

I had one to see if my cervix had started to dilate - they couldn't tell from the external scan - I was about 20 weeks.

BBBee · 04/11/2007 19:54

(He is now 8yrs)

I've had a couple. It's only a thin pencil-like device. And the sonographer was very discreet....

EmmaJW1976 · 04/11/2007 19:55

To diagnose polycystic ovaries in my case, couldn't see the tiny cysts on a normal scan.

kindersurprise · 04/11/2007 19:57

In early pregnancy check ups here in Germany I have only ever had internal ultrasounds. They do not do the external ones until much later. They do not hurt and seem to be much more accurate.
