10 year old girl with sharp lower abdomen pain

My 10 year old DD started complaining of a belly ache at bedtime. It’s sharp constant pain in the lower left abdomen. It sounds like it could be trapped wind, but she’s in quite a lot of pain. Will call 111 but does anyone have any similar experience?

Is it her lower left abdo, or the left as you look at her?

If it's her left, is she constipated? When did she last poo?

You mention gas - have her lie on her front but with her knees bent, legs tucked under her tummy - so her bottom is in the air, higher than the rest of her body, for a few minutes. This can sometimes help gas work its way out.

I hope she feels better soon.

Appendicitis? Good luck and hopefully not as this is serious but not rare. Get immediate medical assistance (if not already) to get it properly diagnosed. Wishing you all well!

First period coming? Though sharp pains doesnt sound quite right.

Oomph · 05/02/2021 00:33

Thank you all. Waiting for 111 to call back but it’s understandably taking ages. The pain comes and goes in waves and it’s sharp. I don’t think it’s period related (oh god). She seems too young for it.

Does it hurt to palpate her tummy? And does it feel right or soft?

WishingHopingThinkingPraying · 05/02/2021 00:35

Tight! And hard, or soft.

Oomph · 05/02/2021 00:39

It feels hard and it hurts when pressed

OP posts:
Oomph · 05/02/2021 00:39

When I say hard I mean taught, but not in an abnormal way

Ok, then yes I think you need seen. Any temp? All useful things to tell them when they call.

Oomph · 05/02/2021 00:40

I am getting worried as she cannot get to sleep and it’s an hour and a half since I spoke to 111

OP posts:
Oomph · 05/02/2021 00:41

No temperature. Thinking I may need to go to a&e which is not what you want to do in a pandemic

OP posts:
CausingChaos2 · 05/02/2021 00:43

If she’s in significant pain you may be better going to A&E.

Oomph · 05/02/2021 00:43

Is it was wind it may have subsided by now. I s Addo do thought of kidney infection but Kidneys are further up and to the back,

Runkle · 05/02/2021 00:44

I would go to a&e . Not ideal in a pandemic but it's all v well organised from my recent experience and at least your girl can be seen.

grassisjeweled · 05/02/2021 00:44

Is she still in pain? If so, a and e.

Oomph · 05/02/2021 00:45

Appendicitis is pain to the right and hurts on release? Not on press

OP posts:
PawPawNoodle · 05/02/2021 00:48

Has she started her periods yet?

WutheredOut · 05/02/2021 00:54

Have you tried rubbing her tummy like you would have done when she was a baby, Clockwise motions quite firmly. If it is trapped wind it might help.
My DD9 has this a few weeks ago, lots of pain and panic. It was constipation and accompanying trapped wind
Hope it turns out to fe something this simple x

Horseshoe5 · 05/02/2021 00:56

Try a hot water bottle and nurofen. It could be period pain possibly. I hope she feels better soon.

PawPawNoodle · 05/02/2021 01:00

Ah just saw that you don't think it's period related. 10 is a perfectly normal time for them to start.

Oomph · 05/02/2021 01:01

@WutheredOut I tried the colicky baby belly rub, but she says it’s too painful. My gut tells me it’s trapped wind, but can it be this painful? She says she thinks she did a poo yesterday, but is not sure

OP posts:
Oomph · 05/02/2021 01:03

I think it maybe too early for period pains. She’s got no boobs or any pubic hair other than incipient fuzz

OP posts:
Oomph · 05/02/2021 01:03

She’s also got a hot water bottle

SirenSays · 05/02/2021 01:04

Agreed, ten isn't too young for period pains. Also be aware appendicitis pain isn't always on the right side, mine was more center left.

Oomph · 05/02/2021 01:08

Thank you all. I can’t tell you how helpful is to have your voices. I am going to give the 111 call back half an hour more. If she does not fall asleep and if the pain does not subside we’ll go to a&e
