DH lips turning blue

GoBackToPartyCity · 02/10/2020 20:08

In the last week DH’s lips have turned blue. There’s been no ‘trigger’ for it. The first time we were having a drink at the pub and he’s just at work tonight.

Anyone had this before? He’s a relatively fit 35 year old with no known health problems.

P.s....I have told him to book a doctor’s appointment.

It usually indicates lack of oxygen or heart problems as far as I know- but I’m definitely not medically qualified.
Do you have a pulse oximeter at home? I’ve just got one for my DD - around £20 on Amazon.
Other thoughts... allergy?
Hope you get answers soon

TheoriginalLEM · 02/10/2020 20:21

He needs medical attention, do not wait

RepeatSwan · 02/10/2020 20:23

I would get that checked, tbh.

Might be something or nothing but I wouldn't ignore it.

baremineral · 02/10/2020 20:24

I think I'd get that checked out, OP. Hope everything is ok!

CiderJolly · 02/10/2020 20:28

Go to a&e- everyone knows lips turning blue is a sign of lack of oxygen which is serious. You seem really flippant about this op.

GoBackToPartyCity · 02/10/2020 20:36

Believe me, I’m not flippant! He’s at work and I’ve bollocked him over the phone. He’s absolutely terrified of needles and is basically refusing to do anything about it in case they have to take blood Hmm. I know what my thoughts on it are!

TheoriginalLEM · 02/10/2020 20:45

They can check his oxygen saturation by putting a guage on his finger, lie, tell him that will be enough. A blood test is the least of his worries if he has heart failure.

Namenic · 02/10/2020 20:46

Sounds like he should get it checked out. Some things like congenital heart conditions could not be picked up until adulthood. Or there could be something environmental - like at work.

He can always go and get it checked out - he has the choice to refuse certain tests - but at least docs can tell him what they think it might be and let him decide if on balance he wants the test.

Some tests are non invasive.

My DJ’s dentist rang today to confirm his appointment on Monday. He wasn’t in so she ran through a health check list with me. Amongst the questions concerning Covid-19 she asked me if his lips had gone blue. Your Dh needs to see a doctor now.

MsAdoraBelleDearheartVonLipwig · 02/10/2020 20:48

*Dh’s dentist. I don’t have a DJ.

Terrace58 · 02/10/2020 20:50

I’m not 100% certain he should go straight to a&e because he probably needs a Covid screening. However your local facility is handling that, he should do what they recommend. He could have any number of conditions, he could also be spreading Covid at his workplace right now. He needs medical attention and not just to protect himself.

Plussizejumpsuit · 02/10/2020 20:52

It feels utterly bonkers he wouldn't seek immediate medical attention. I can't get my head around this. Its normally a sign of lack of oxygen or heart issues as pp have said. So needs attention.

Etinox · 02/10/2020 20:53

The NHS link posted upthread says go to A&E. It also mentions beta blockers as a less worrying cause.

GoBackToPartyCity · 02/10/2020 20:54

Thanks everyone. You’ve confirmed what I already thought/knew. I hadn’t actually thought about Covid...I had no idea that blue lips could be a symptom!

He’s an absolute nightmare with this needle phobia. I even tried the line of possibly leaving our son without a dad but it just doesn’t get through to him!!

SuperEkstra · 02/10/2020 20:56

Please, please go to A&E

saraclara · 02/10/2020 20:56

I'm not one to jump in on these sorts of threads at all. I'm not remotely health anxious.

But this is classic 'silent hypoxia with covid' where the individual feels perfectly well, but is really low on oxygen.

He absolutely needs to leave work now. If that's what it is, he's spreading it. And the lack of oxygen is serious.

Lightsabre · 02/10/2020 20:58

Buy a pulse oximeter from the pharmacy and check his sats levels.

mineofuselessinformation · 02/10/2020 21:00

Low oxygen or dehydration.
He needs to get checked as clearly something's not right.
Don't take no for an answer.

Eckhart · 02/10/2020 21:00

My lips (and nails) often go blue if I'm tired or cold. Or if I've been for a long run.

I'm in fine fettle and have been checked out many times over the years. My circulation is just a bit crap at getting all the way to the ends.

If it's new, he should definitely get it checked out, but I just wanted to post something to balance out the alarmist responses.

Eckhart · 02/10/2020 21:01

*checked out by doctors, I mean

Just re-read it and it looks like I'm bragging about how many people have ogled me...

GoBackToPartyCity · 02/10/2020 21:01

Thanks @saraclara. I’ve sent him that link.

SavageBeauty73 · 02/10/2020 21:02

You need to check his blood sats ASAP!

Al1Langdownthecleghole · 02/10/2020 21:03

You can download a pulse oximeter to most smart phones.

Elsiebear90 · 02/10/2020 21:04

My lips (and hands, nails/feet) turn blue occasionally, most of the time because it’s cold, sometimes my lips turn blue even when I’m not cold. I work in healthcare and have had numerous tests and procedures and there’s nothing wrong with my heart or lungs, I have Raynauds, which is probably the reason. Are his hands and feet normally quite cold? If this is a new thing then definitely get it checked out though.

CoffeeRunner · 02/10/2020 21:06

Is he also short of breath? If his oxygen saturation levels were low enough to cause blue lips I would also expect some breathing difficulties.

Whichever way, yes, he needs urgent medical attention.
