That's it really-am I being paranoid or should I get her checked?
Where and how if yes?

Iam erring on the side of not "over-reacting" but have just have had a friend's dd diagnosed with it-bless her only 8mts

She has been through all her recent photos (300+) and only one showed this feature.

Am probably being a paranoid parent but was just interested in the views of the all knowing Mumsnet posse.

Whooooosh, can you start a thread asking for Chipmonkey? She's an optometrist.

I'd go to my optician about this, but he's excellent and has lots of up to the minute equipment that the GP doesn't.

But I would go, because it would worry me silly if I didn't.

Hope it's just a freak reflection rather than anything serious xxx

NotAnOtter · 01/10/2007 22:48

its good to be aware but i hope that you are being a little over cautious
please try not to worry

ScaryMonsterStories · 01/10/2007 22:51

I wouldn't have thought an optician would have the equipment to check a toddlers retina having seen how they do it in babies. I could be very wrong though.

I don't think it particularly matters whether you see GP or optician TBH...

Whooosh · 01/10/2007 22:51

Kind of agree withyou Hunker-I know it is rare but the way my luck has been running this year.......

OP posts:
Whooosh · 01/10/2007 22:52

Really scary-is GP the bstter route then [sigh]

See if Chipmonkey's around. There are other optician-type people around too. Someone's DH is an eye surgeon too, I think.

Start a thread - something like "calling anybody who is an OPTICIAN or knows somebody who is who can look at a photo for me" - I'm sure they'll know what it's about just from the title.

chipmonkey · 01/10/2007 23:14

Here I am! Whoosh, I would get it checked out. It may just be a weird photo but any difference in pupils should be checked out quickly. I am not altogether convinced that it is the "white" pupil you get with retinoblastoma, hard to tell with the photo quality but I do see a hint of a red tinge which is good. But even at that, you could be looking at something as simple as a squint or lazy eye which can appear if the eyes are looking in different directions.
I would bring the photo to your GP first off who should refer you urgently.
As I say, it could be just a weird photo, recently we were on hols in Centerparcs France and oddly enough a lot of the photos taken by staff at the pool showed odd pupils in normal people but I wouldn't take the chance. Let me know how you get on!

hunkermunker · 01/10/2007 23:20

Thank you, Chipmonkey!

Whooosh · 01/10/2007 23:29

Thank you SO much Chipmonkey-will do as advised and hope that parenoid parenthood is all that is wrong

OP posts:
chipmonkey · 01/10/2007 23:33

Paranoid parents are the best sort!

xXxamyxXx · 01/10/2007 23:36

fret worry and fret some more its a mammys jobhope she is ok

Whooosh · 02/10/2007 09:05

Doctors being useless-is it worth taking her to an optician (am hoping this question isn't as dumb as it sounds)

OP posts:
DoctorFrankenSquonk · 02/10/2007 09:08

I would say that an optician may be a better person to take her to than a gp, tbh

Not that I'm an expert or anything

LIZS · 02/10/2007 09:12

tbh it is far more likely to be a quirk of the light reflected by the flash than anything more sinister. Try an opthamologist in the first instance (listed with Opticians in Yellow Pages), you should get a free appointment anyway and they can refer if necessary.

Whooosh · 02/10/2007 09:16

I am sure it is just a quirk of the camera too but the paranoid parent in me makes me want to make sure having looked at various pictures on websites-just to scare myself

OP posts:
hunkermunker · 02/10/2007 17:09

Did you see a doctor today, Whoosh?

NAB3 · 02/10/2007 17:11

I would hate to worry you but I def think this needs to be looked at my someone qualified.

NAB3 · 02/10/2007 17:12

Make sure you take her and the photo with you.

Whooosh · 02/10/2007 18:01

Doctors couldn't fit us in-surprise,surprise and optician in the village is closed till tomorrow grrrrr.

I am taking dd to see an ENT specialist tomorrow about her tonsils and the consultant deals with paediatric head and neck cancers-am hoping she may have an opthalmoscope (sp?)handy and be able to put my mind at rest.

Failing that will drag dd and photos to optician tomorrow.

I know the chances are minimal-even more so as a friend's dd has just been diagnosed.
When I asked her last week whether she had notices the "cats eye" effect in any of her photos she only saw it in one out of about 300.....

OP posts:
Whooosh · 02/10/2007 18:03

Oh blimey-I am clearly loosing my mind as have just completely repeated myself about friend's dd-sorry folks.

OP posts:
NAB3 · 02/10/2007 18:14

I hope all is okay but please get this checked out.

hunkermunker · 02/10/2007 18:49

Hope tonsil appointment goes well. DS1 gets bogging tonsils (as did I when I was younger - actually, still do!) and I know how ill it can make you feel

Also hope you get to see someone re DD's eye tomorrow.

lucyellensmum · 02/10/2007 19:18

There was a thread on here recently where the Op daughter had a similar thread, she had it checked out by a specialist, everything was fine, turned out to be a quirk of the camera. Saying that, it is best to check these things, im sure it will be ok. try not to worry.

Spagblog · 02/10/2007 19:23

I took a photo of a girl at a panto and was concerned about this. She was looking in the same direction as the photo of your DD.
The mum took her to see her GP and it turned out to be nothing, just a quirk of the flash.

Be on the safe side though x
