Cystitis still not away after 2 lots of antibiotics.

Any advice?
I was given 3 days of antibiotics last Friday by the pharmacist. They didn't work. So I had a phone appt with the GP on Monday afternoon, and he prescribed 3 days of Macrobid. I finished those on Thursday. I had felt it was starting to help. But then last night I went for a pee and OW. This morning I have got up and I'm burning again.

Symptoms-
Pee is cloudy.
Second half of pee burns.
Last few seconds of pee burns even more.
Urethra stings almost constantly.
Feel like I need to go for a pee more than usual, but then not much pee and it stings like hell.
No back pain.
No fever.
No nausea.

Any thoughts or advice? I'm working today so not sure if I can go to OOH doctor. Would they be able to help over the phone or would they want to see me? Urgggggh

Sounds like you need a longer course of macrobid maybe seven days. Phone out of hours gp today and explain situation. Keep drinking plenty of water in the meantime

Ask if ooh Dr can phone or email prescription to your pharmacy

how much do you drink?
try a cup of water every half hour.

Thanks. I probably don't drink enough, but I've drunk a water bottle full in the past hour and have refilled it.

Thanks for info re OOH Doctor. I had thought they might want to see me, but thinking logically they probably want to see as few people as possible.

Oh I forgot to say, I also handed in a urine sample on Wed. Do any of you know how long any results would take from that, or would they only test it now, ie because there might be more reason to look into it?

Try the Caneston Cystitis sachets while you wait for doctor advice. It is really cheap. It's a 2 day course of 3 sachets a day. It takes the acid out of the urine and stops the stinging feeling.

Thanks - I actually have some, as I bought it last week but only used one sachet, as I had read that it didn't actually cure it, it just helped the symptoms - but I have a glass of it in my hand right now

Agree you need 7 days, i had 7 days of macrobid which worked

thanks so much for the advice - I did think 3 days seemed odd, to be fair. It's been many years since I've had it, so didn't question it.

I'm guessing it's a good sign that the Macrobid did seem to be working?

I take a spoonful of bicarbonate in water as soon as I start feeling shite/painful. I have chronic cystitis as a lovely menopause feature.
Yes I drink water regularly, eat well etc etc.
It staves off the worst.

Ooooh, I'm menopausal - it didn't occur to me that this could be yet another feature of that. Clearly feeling low, having sleepless nights, itchy skin and being barrel shaped just isn't enough. Aggggggggggggggggggggggggggggh

Order some d-mannose supplements to stop the bacteria sticking to the urethra wall and getting them flushed out properly each time. (Recommended by gynae team for chronic UTI’s)

I need at least a weeks worth of macrobid to treat my uti's.

No, the pharmacist gave me one which is apparently the only one they are allowed to prescribe. When I spoke to the GP a few days later, he said they sometimes don't work, but it's all they are allowed to prescribe. He then arranged for a prescription, and it was after I started on the Macrobid that I handed in my urine sample.

Hello, I was plagued by UTIs for many years, regular courses of antibiotics ( 3 days def not enough and broad spectrum is fine but sounds like more targeted treatment is needed) at least every other month.

After reading about it on MN I started taking a daily course of DMannose tablets, I get mine on eBay from 5Greens, it has honestly changed my life. No more flare ups after intercourse ( pretty much a given every time) or after drinking wine/tea etc. I've not needed antibiotics in about 18 months, it's astonishing.

I'd highly recommend trying a few weeks of this too, (I'm not on commission so by all means try different suppliers but go for high quality capsules.)

I found it to be Pain in my lower back quite often, when it's really bad it's like you're being punched in the back repeatedly, above hip level. You're right to get on top of it ASAP, don't let it get to that point. I was never able to shift it with anything other than antibs. X

@LurkinMerkin thanks for the recommendation too. That's interesting how successful it seems to be. I've ordered some from amazon as it'll arrive tomorrow.

3 days usually enough for most urinary tract infections but yours seems more severe so probably need 7. Try drinking 2-3 litres of water daily until it clears. Should be drinking 6-7 glasses daily anyway. Not really any evidence sachets are more effective than drinking water on its own but ppl probably end up drinking more water once they buy them!

Kidney pain just on lower back at sides. Important to treat UTI as quickly as possible so doesn't spread to kidney. Usually same antibiotics prescribed.

Cut out sugar and stopped having sex as it triggered it. (Peri Menopausal)

Depressed the living shit out of me but with the antibiotics that sorted me out.

I did introduce these things back in a few weeks later. Flare up.

So I permanently changed my diet and that’s made a difference. I split up with my ex (and have another issue that’s put me off sex) so I do t know if that will trigger it again in the future but I’m ok just now thankfully!

I would also recommend DMannose. I take a daily dose but you can up it at the first sign of symptoms. You also need to drink enough water and wee and wash before and after sex. You might also want to look at YesYesYes products.

I'm now on day 4 of a 5 day course if Macrobid. Some pees are OK ish, others are still stinging like before.
I started taking D-mannose yesterday too.
I don't know why, but this is starting to feel like it'll never go away 😕

Did it clear up @SpanishFly I've just got antibiotics today. This time it's been so painful in my bladder as well as the stingy wee. I've been in tears with it today.
