Any advice?
I was given 3 days of antibiotics last Friday by the pharmacist. They didn't work. So I had a phone appt with the GP on Monday afternoon, and he prescribed 3 days of Macrobid. I finished those on Thursday. I had felt it was starting to help. But then last night I went for a pee and OW. This morning I have got up and I'm burning again.

Symptoms-
Pee is cloudy.
Second half of pee burns.
Last few seconds of pee burns even more.
Urethra stings almost constantly.
Feel like I need to go for a pee more than usual, but then not much pee and it stings like hell.
No back pain.
No fever.
No nausea.

Any thoughts or advice? I'm working today so not sure if I can go to OOH doctor. Would they be able to help over the phone or would they want to see me? Urgggggh

I have had this recently took 5 courses of antibiotics to clear it up. Now taking d-mannose regularly but I also took a course of uva urvsi. I found it helpful to get my own urine dipsticks as I could see with the previous antibiotics I still had blood and leukocytes in my urine. Last course got rid of leukocytes but my bladder was so inflamed after 5 weeks of infection I still had blood in my urine for a couple of weeks with pain. But with the dipsticks I could check there were no leukocytes so the infection had gone. You have my sympathy as it is horrible.

D-mannose is great. Probiotics help too. But the one that did it for me was Hiprex which I bought on eBay for £19 and was sent from Australia.

I always get a uti combined with thrush. I second the d man rose supplement. To cover all bases I would get a thrush oral pill. Quite often the antibiotics cause the thrush which can present as a burning feeling in that area.

Hi folks. I finished my 5 days extra macrobid yesterday. I feel a lot better BUT not 100%. Still a bit uncomfortable peeing.
Also took 1 D-mannose on Wednesday, and have never felt so unwell - bloating, sore gas, gurgling bowel. This slowly eased over 24hrs, but it was hellish. They are all common side effects apparently. So I can't even take those 😭

Mine were recurring until my consultant at haematology gave me co amox whatever it's called! He gave me 7 days of a huge dose of that, had raging thrush but it shifted it

Hallo SpanishFly, you have all my sympathy, it is miserable getting recurrent UTIs. I noticed that you said you are menopausal. I had never had a UTI before the menopause, then had 3-4 year for a few years before suffering 4 in the space of a month. I saw a lovely female doctor who was around my age, who suggested I try Vagifem. She said that the lack of oestrogen at menopause causes the tissues of the vagina and urinary tract to become thinner and more prone to irritation and infection. Vagifem is a very low dose of oestrogen applied as a pessary and not the same as full HRT. It has been marvellous and I haven't had a UTI since starting to use it some 18 months ago. There are a number of threads on the Menopause board about it if you're interested. Good luck.

Have you tried changing your coil ??? Or pill?? Sometimes the contraceptive you have is causing this...

SpanishFly · 10/08/2020 16:54

I don't use contraception, so don't have a coil or pill 😕

Thanks for the info re thrush, if it returns I'll definitely try a pessary for that.

if it's thrush your partner needs to be treated as well.

Using Vagifem after month of UTI mayhem, not relieved even with home made Barley water.Recommend and can't believe we all suffer in silence Thanks Mums net.
I realised vaginal dryness a thing for over 65s after doctor had recommended Vagi Fem . I started to take this targeted local treatment and , it seems to work for me.At 1 every day dosage for 2 weeks then twice a week for rest of 8 weeks on the same days each week
My Query us I missed out one day in later twice weekly stages. Is there any reason not to take the dose on the next day and take the second dose equidistant i.e instead of Tuesday and Friday ...Wednesday and Saturday?

I second d mannose. It never works for me to kill an infection.. I always need the initial antibiotics but then d mannose after when the last bit never seems to clear up. And I take one tablet a day of it as preventative. Lots of hugs. It's horrible x

I have a long history of urinary problems from being a child up to my early twenties. My Dr gave me buscopan for when it was really bad to help stop the crampy urge to pee when there really wasn't any pee! And also I was told to make sure bladder was empty when I went to the loo, I was told to rock all the way forwards and then as far back as I could and then wait to see if any more came. I was told to avoid thong type underwear as it can pass bacteria from back to front. Another thing that used to set it off was drinking white wine!
