My short sightedness is worse again after 2 years and I'm 29

I'm 29 and short sighted. I had an eye test 2 years ago but I know it's worse again because writing is a bit blury on the TV despite wearing glasses. Apparently short sightedness stops around age 20 so now I'm worried.

I'm 32 and it is only the last 2 eye tests that my eye sight has stopped changing so much, my last test there was a slight shift but not enough for new glasses. So my prescription has been roughly the same for the last 4 years.
I'm shortsighted too, -4 in each eye.
My optician said not to worry when I asked her before about when my sight would "settle"

I have never heard that. I first wore glasses at 25 and I am now 33. My prescription has changed 4 times!

Mine only stopped changing in the last 5-10 years, I am 39.

my prescription got worse every year until my early 30s and has been stable now for the last decade. Stopped at -5 and -5.5 which is perfectly manageable.

I’ve worn glasses since I was 12, I am shortsighted. My eyesight stabilised between 18-23ish and then every prescription was a correction until I got to 40ish when it stabilised again. I expect it will change again when I begin to get long sighted and need reading glasses near 50ish.

I've just turned 40 and my short sightedness is still getting worse but it has slowed down. 0.25 change in my last prescription in one eye only.

I'm -4.5 and -4 now and the losing another 0.25 every few years is not a worry. I'm far more worried about losing near vision and having to get varifocals.

Mine didn't settle until around 30, the optician said that was normal.

I was told that two but my prescription changed several times in my twenties/early thirties.

My optician said short sightedness usually stabilises in your early 30s, mine did...then as I had towards 40 it’s gradually getting worse again. Don’t need reading glasses yet though!

I am extremely short sighted and have worn glasses since the age of 4 my mum was also extremely short sighted my adult children are short sighted to a lesser extent. There is no magic age at which your prescription stops changing, sometimes it stays the same for a many years then it changes again maybe every year/ two years for a while. I am in my fifties, there have been many changes in my prescription over the years, actually in my forties an age when a lot of people start to wear glasses for the first time my prescription actually got a little better. But unfortunately for me, apart from that time, is has always been a downward change in my prescription.

I'm 40 and short sighted. I've worn glasses since about the age of 6 and my prescription changes most years (although I don't always need new glasses)

I'm an optometrist and yes some people's sight stabilises around 20-21 (which is why laser surgery isn't suggested until then), but many more have some deterioration after that.

Mine got worse until forties.

Why do people (myself included) become shortsighted?

Is it genetic?

My short-sightedness didn't stabilise itself till I was about 32. Now enjoying the age related long-sightedness which is counteracting it, so my glasses are getting less strong in the negative!

I am very short sighted and worn glasses since I was 4 years old now 34 and my eyes are still changing. Things to remember is that illnesses and medicines can alter your eyes like steriods and also pregnancy(s) to can change eyes. So my prescription is always up and down. I have had my eyes slowly improve then get worse again due to having to take steriods in the past and being pregnant at other times.

My prescription increases every few years. I’m 54, currently -10 so very, very shortsighted.

@ouch321 it depends! I inherited my crap eyesight-my eyeballs have always been the wrong shape. Even if you have perfectly fine eyes, as we get older the fluid inside the eyeball gets thicker, the lens gets stiffer and less easy to move and focus and other issues can affect the eyes (high blood pressure, diabetes etc). So all of this can affect our eyes and make our vision less than perfect.

I was short sighted from the age of 14 to 37ish. Then it went away and now in my 50s, I am slightly short sighted again.

I only got glasses at 19! And even then it was only as I was off to uni and the optician said it might be worth having them in case I was at the back of a large lecture theatre. Ten years later and it’s still gradually getting worse, can’t even watch tv comfortably without contacts.

Both my parents are massively short sighted though and have been since childhood so I’m not sure how I got off so lightly for 20 years!

I'm far sighted but during pregnancies (in my 30s) my eyesight has changed a lot.

I'm 35, very shortsighted and had an eyetest last week. It was the first time EVER my prescription didn't change and eyesight hadn't deteriorated. I was told in my 20s that it should stabilise by 25 so it only took 10 years.

Apparently I can now look forward to becoming more long sighted due to age. Sigh.

Have you been wfh and spending loads of time in front of a screen? I’ve had to start maki g myself take breaks as the breaks you get naturally in the office like looking around to talk to someone you or looking away to answer the phone don’t happen as it’s all on the screen.
