Excuse me for asking about the smell of my wee

In the last couple of weeks my wee has suddenly started smelling weird. Sort of rich, reminds me of fondue but not quite. It's a very strong smell, whereas I never normally notice any smell when I wee. I have no itch, no discharge, no discomfort. It makes no difference whether or not I am well-hydrated. I'm in my 50s, on HRT, and overweight.

Does suddenly smelly wee signify anything?

What do you drink on the average day? Is it worth trying nothing but plenty of water for a couple of days to see if the smell is still present?

Crochetnanigans · 04/01/2020 22:07

Odd occasion mine has smelt like sugar puffs 😳

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 04/01/2020 22:09

Off the top of my head:

  • has your diet changed?
  • do you drink enough?
  • UTIs do not neccessarily have symptoms like pain etc.
  • has your liver and kidney function been tested?

In your place I'd hand in a urine sample at my GP's, they can do a test (I am in a different system so you may have to handle this differently)

Puddypuddy · 04/01/2020 22:49

Wow!!Shocked to hear sugar puffs mentioned!!I experience that too sometimes!!😱😱

DickDewy · 04/01/2020 22:52

That can be a sign of diabetes.

You are dehydrated

chillichutneysarnie · 04/01/2020 22:59

Have you been eating more garlic than usual? I swear it seeps into everything including my wee.

wintertime6 · 04/01/2020 22:59

Does it smell sweet? Could be a sign of diabetes?

RJnomore1 · 04/01/2020 23:01

I’ve been taking lots of cold and cough stuff and I swear my pee smells of menthol

Any dietary changes at all you can think of?

Ginfordinner · 04/01/2020 23:01

UTI?
Diabetes?
Eating asparagus?
Dehydrated?

I think you need to take a sample to the GP.

lisag1969 · 04/01/2020 23:03

Sugar puffs me too. 🙈 x

Elieza · 04/01/2020 23:08

Sugary sweet is diabetes. I think it tastes sweet too. According to Outlander (Not that I’d want to try)

Again, according to Outlander, Diabetes used to be called the sugar sickness.

Time to get a urine sample in to the doctors.

HairyDogsOfThigh · 04/01/2020 23:09

Sugar puffs here, too.

avocadoze · 04/01/2020 23:13

Pregnant? I realised for dc2 and dc3 because of changes to odour. (I think it’s either the heightened sense of smell or I can smell HCG.

Haggisfish · 04/01/2020 23:15

I sometimes have an odd yeasty rich smell
If I drink champagne or beer!

Dilbertian · 04/01/2020 23:27

It's not the smell you get with asparagus (which I haven't eaten in any case).

I have the smell even when I'm so well-hydrated that my pee is almost colourless. I'm not peeing any more or less frequently than normal.

Definitely not a sweet smell. Savoury, if anything.

As for dietary changes - it has been Christmas WinkWink

We've pretty much finished all the festive luxuries, so maybe I'll give it a week or two of eating normally. If the smell goes away, no worries. If it doesn't go away, I'll get a sample tested.

ThanksSmile

Pregnant?

GrinGrinGrin

I'm in my 50s and on HRT!

Though TBF now you mention it, the smell is reminiscent of pregnancy.

Could be thyroid related

Miljea · 04/01/2020 23:46

Pickles? Something in a Big Mac- I eat one every 6 months! Makes my wee smell weird. I wonder if it's gherkins??

digerd · 05/01/2020 07:55

Had this happen to me the first time I took a multi vitamin B tablet daily. It is a known side effect but it did go away after a week or so.

borntobequiet · 05/01/2020 08:00

HRT isn’t contraception. Women in their 50s can conceive.

(Having said that, it’s unlikely that you’re pregnant.)

Roselilly36 · 05/01/2020 08:09

I have a lot of UTI and urine issues in general, my nurse told me that urine can smell if you are constipated, I find D-mannose powder helpful to prevent UTI, another recommendation from my nurse & urologist.

Pearofwisdom · 05/01/2020 08:12

There is a certain cold medicine/decongestant that makes mine smell like smoky bacon crisps (terrified me until I figured it out) . Taken any medicine?

sparklesandmoresparkles · 05/01/2020 08:14

Definitely get it checked out. The smell plus cloudy wee is the only symptom I get with a UTI (with a one off burning wee randomly). I’m going back tomorrow to test what I think is my third in a month now, despite both a 5 and then 7 day course of antibiotics Sad
