DH is in hospital

He has had a terribly sore chest for the best part of a month. After a lot of to-ing and fro-ing to various specialists we found out today what the problem is.

Basically, tall thin men are at risk of a spontaneous (lung collapsing). The "cure" is a little more complicated than the average collapsed lung.

He is having surgery today - to remove the affected pleural lining (this may be the entire lining of his left lung). A stay in ICU tonight and perhaps tomorrow and a fair bit of pain.

My poor love. I have never heard of this before

that would be a spontaneous pneumothorax...

thanks. I feel pretty lonely. Our extended family are pretty disinterested. Not one offer of a visit or help with the three kids .

I feel sorry for him that none of his family care enough to pop in to see him.

One of myt colleagues had this and was off work for quite a while. Huge sympathy to your dh.

He is out of surgery and in a lot of pain .

They are giving him some diamorphine as we speak.

I have heard of this, but fortunatley never had to witness it, but then both dh and dd have Marfan Syndrome - so as they are tall and thin they are more prone to it than the general populus. Hope your hubby is much better soon.

So sorry to hear that your dh is in the hospital I hope he has a speedy recovery. Hopefully you have friends nearby that might help out since family is being so inconsiderate about it?

Oh this sounds AWFUL. I have never heard of it either. I hope the treatment is swift and successful. It sounds scary. Have you got anyone looking after you?

Seriously, one of the known causes of spontaneous pneumothorax is laughing too hard if you are the 'right' build.
A pleurodesis should sort him out and now he knows what the symptoms are, he will be aware should he get problems on the other side.
Sorry he's had to go through this as chest drains don't look like a lot of fun, but he will be better soon.

My dh had this 14 yrs ago and had similar surgery - i didnt realise it was common in tall thin men - which he was at the time - do they call it pneumo thorax - or something?

I have to say he is fine now and it made him chuck smoking which is never a bad thing

Poor chap. He will need rest and tlc when he comes out of the hospital so hopefully his family will have a chance to make amends.

DH had this just after he graduated. He has been told to avoid unnecessary pressure on the lungs ie no scuba diving.

He has not suffered since, it was over 10 years ago.

I am shocked that it took them so long to find out what it was. I am sure DH's showed on the x-ray.

oooh you have had such a bad run of luck dejags. I hope he is home and on the mend soon. Very sorry too that family are being useless
