Ds has to have a biopsy tomorrow and this is one of the possibilities. He is only 14 months and apart from 3 lumps in his jowls seems totally fine.

my FIL has non-hodgkins and is currently having blood transfusions and chemo

hope everything goes ok tomorrow

Tamum · 15/07/2007 20:30

You poor thing, I hope it all goes well. My friend's ds had swellings like this that the medics were convinced were lymphoma but turned out to be an infection with no temperature. Here's hoping.

Just in case anyone reads this and worries about Hodgkin's I have to correct tegan- the 5 year survival rate is at least 85%, so not at all bad.

The positive messages help a lot thank you. It would be the best thing ever if we got some good news tomorrow. Will post again whenever I get back from Cambridge. x

Oh poor you.

I work on a haematology ward with adults with various lymphomas.

I wouldn't like to speculate re anything to do with paediatrics, but talking to one of our registrars recently who wants to specialise in paeds oncology (she has to do a bit of adult haematology too as part of her specialisation)she said that children are usually a lot more resilient and bounce back better than adults. For adults success rates are improving all the time and new treatments such as monoclonal antibodies are being trialled on an ongoing basis with positive results .

Sending all positive thoughts and best wishes to you and your family xxxx

That's great news, Cod. I hope it's all sorted out v soon.

hippiPOTTERami · 16/07/2007 16:13

Fab news, hopefully they will discover it is something harmless adn a biopsy won't be necessary.

cod, unable to decipher your 2nd message but I assume those are the other tests they are running?

Tell shoppingbags we are rooting for her ds!

MissGrissindor · 16/07/2007 16:17

My dad had non-Hodgkins lymphoma but he had loads of other symptoms too such as night sweats etc. My friend, who is a nurse told me the type of non-hodgkins younger people get tends to be very curable.

I hope all turns out well xxx

deaconblue · 16/07/2007 16:18

thanks so much everyone. We saw the paedatric oncology doctor today and after asking a million questions he said that he feels lymphoma is unlikely (although can't rule out until after a biopsy which will be next week now) as the lumps came up literally overnight. He thinks it is either glandular fever, an infection without a temp or the weird atypical mycobaterium thing foxinsocks mentioned (thanks so much for that, it meant I could discuss properly with him). So more blood tests today and have to go back tomorrow for ultra sound and discussion with cancer head honcho. Keep everything crossed for a few more days please

OP posts:
deaconblue · 16/07/2007 16:19

oh and he also said if it is lymphoma there is a 95% total cure rate in children, so even if it is the worst case scenario we still have a very good fighting chance

All sounding as good as it could so far then Thanks for letting us know, and keeping everything crossed for next week.

nailpolish · 16/07/2007 16:24

everything still crossed

PetitFilou1 · 16/07/2007 16:25

Don't think about it yet, think about it when you have a diagnosis. Keeping my fingers crossed for you and good luck for tomorrow.

geekgirl · 16/07/2007 16:28

fingers crossed, shoppingbags

I don't know if this helps - dd1 had enlarged lymph nodes in her neck at this age too - we were referred to a paediatrician who put it down to her eczema, as she was completely fine otherwise. They went back to normal after a year or so.

foxinsocks · 16/07/2007 16:30

is ds still in hospital?

fingers crossed!

deaconblue · 16/07/2007 16:35

no we came back this afternoon, got to go again for this ultra sound tomorrow and then if they decide after getting blood tests back we need a biopsy still, it will be next week. Poor little man is getting sick of hospitals, I think parents who cope with this for months and months are amazing people, full of admiration for the families I've seen over the last 10 days

OP posts:
foxinsocks · 16/07/2007 16:37

aah I'm glad you've got him home.

I don't know how people do it either. It is just so emotionally draining. Your life just stops basically.

Good luck tomorrow - hopefully, you'll have some answers soon.
