Bitten by lion - GP?

BittenByLion · 11/04/2019 19:03

Long story short, I’ve just got back from abroad and while I was there I got bitten by a lion. It’s not a serious bite but it did break the skin. The bite was on Monday, it’s healing nicely and there’s no sign of infection but do I need to do anything? Tetanus jab etc.? I gave it a wash at the time but haven’t had any medical attention.

NC’ed cos this is pretty identifying but I’ve been here yonks. Poo on the pouffe, garlic thread worms, pan pipe elf mum, minge etc.

OP posts:

Poor lion cubs
To cheer you all up my DH got into trouble at Discovery Cove in Florida for accidentally sexually assaulting a dolphin . I say “assaulting” but it looked pretty consensual to me

Dizzywizz · 12/04/2019 17:59

??? @Hoppinggreen - I hope you’re going to elaborate!

LesLavandes · 12/04/2019 18:01

Did you not have an up to date tetanus before travelling ?

You need to get proper medical advice and not write on here!

LannieDuck · 12/04/2019 18:06

I think you're probably ok, but I would book a GP appointment to go and discuss. The lion cub's teeth are unlikely to be very sterile. I imagine the GP will need to consider the possibility of infection and give you advice based on that.

Hoppinggreen · 12/04/2019 18:10

Dizzy I have told this story on here before I think
There was some confusion over belly button/genitals and tickling occurred.
Dolphin anatomy isn’t as straight forward as you would think.

Dolphin looked happy, we couldn’t stop laughing but The Staff weren’t best pleased

DointItForTheKids · 12/04/2019 18:17

For all those bitten by a dolphin. Was this at a dolphin experience type thing?

Please, PLEASE don't go to these. Look up The Cove/Taiji and find out about the annual dolphin drives and dolphin slaughter which support the captive injury.

You'd want to bite someone if you were kidnapped from your family, forced to live in a minute tank, fed frozen-defrosted fish and made to perform in the hot sun in order to get any food at all, hour after hour, day after day?

Sorry, slight rant over, but there's so much of this exploitation goes on it's really sickening. Avoid places like SeaWorld (watch Blackfish to learn more).

Littleheart5 · 12/04/2019 18:17

These places are awful. Akin to the dodgy baby elephant ‘sanctuaries’ in Thailand/Sri Lanka etc. (Although there is one legit one in Thailand) All nonsense. It’s such a ruse to make money it baffles me people fall for it. You should never be petting wild animals, it is BAD for them!! Animals rarely reject their young. Makes me so Angry

NicoAndTheNiners · 12/04/2019 18:23

I met someone once who'd been bitten by a tiger, but it ripped his arm off and he only had one arm when I met him.

XXcstatic · 12/04/2019 18:24

I don't usually post medical advice but, for a lion, I'll bite Wink

Cats of all sizes have nasty bugs in their mouths. But we're now 4-5 days on from the injury. It's likely (though not 100%) that, if you were going to get an infection, there would be signs by now. I wouldn't give automatically give you antibiotics at this stage but I would run it past the local microbiologist and wait till she stopped laughing

I would also talk to the microbiologist about the rabies risk. Cats can carry rabies, so I assume lions can too. Hopefully you have got away with it this time because treatment should have been started within 48h of the bite, ideally sooner. The next time you get bitten by an animal anywhere where rabies is endemic, OP, for the love of god seek immediate medical help Do not piss around with rabies,

Tetanus is a theoretical risk but an immunisation against tetanus is pointless, because it takes several weeks to take effect. If you think you may not be fully immunised, you need tetanus immunoglobulin. However, as long as you have had 5 tetanus vaccines in your lifetime at appropriate intervals, you are covered for life. Almost all British people born after 1960 are fully immunised, unless they didn't have their childhood vaccines.

I will be interested to know how this compares with what actually happened when you saw the GP Smile

BoreOfWhabylon · 12/04/2019 18:29

@BittenByLion

Please make sure when you see the GP that s/he refers to Public Health England's guidelines on managing post-exposure rabies risk.

assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/720075/PHE_guidelines_on_rabies_post-exposure_treatment.pdf

According to the guidelines, South Africa is a high risk area for rabies. This puts you into the amber or red risk category, depending on the depth of the bite.

For amber risk a course of rabies vaccine is recommended. For red risk rabies vaccine plus Human Rabies Immunoglobulin is recommended.

Rabies usually has a long incubation period, which is why the vaccine can be given after the exposure has occurred.

A man died from rabies in the UK last year after being bitten by a cat while on holiday in Morocco, despite seeking treatment

starsparkle08 · 12/04/2019 18:29

You should be ashamed of yourself for taking part in the abuse of these wonderful animals .

And now your wasting nhs time snivelling about a nibble from a lion cub. There’s nothing wrong with you physically , however morally there is a lot to be desired

Butterflycookie · 12/04/2019 18:32

I work for 111. I’ve had someone bitten by a baby jaguar (she worked will animals). Told her to go to a&e. Most people that get bitten by animals we tell them to go to a&e as the wound needs to be checked out. Many people are worried about tetanus but the only way for people to know if they need a tetanus immunisation is for the wound to be checked out at a&e.

NicoAndTheNiners · 12/04/2019 18:35

I know someone who was bitten by a cat in Morocco just after the death last year. He had awful problems getting the rabies vaccination. His GP wouldn't help, there was a time period it had to be given in. Vaccine had to be ordered from London, his local a&e ended up ordering it in the end.

greenpop21 · 12/04/2019 18:36

I was bitten by a dog whilst jogging a few years back and GP didn't have a tetanus jab, he sent me to A&E!

greenpop21 · 12/04/2019 18:36

You'll be seen in minors.

flameycakes · 12/04/2019 18:41

I got bit by a mole once, trying to save the little bugger from the cats, not as exciting as a lion, had to have a tetanus jab though x

EllenMP · 12/04/2019 18:42

If this was a captive lion (assuming it was) and has no signs of illness and your wound is not infected, you are probably ok. But I would go to my doctor just to be sure.

Ginsodden · 12/04/2019 18:51

A giraffe stole my sandwich :(

Joebloggswazere · 12/04/2019 18:55

A goat bit my fringe once, I know it’s not very exciting but it was the 90’s and I had a massive backcombed fringe, or I did until the goat ate it. Sad times.

Theninjawhinger · 12/04/2019 18:58

joeblogg it was clearly a fashion forward goat trying to save you from crimes against 90’s hair!

PlatypusPie · 12/04/2019 19:00

We were on a sailing holiday off the Turkish coast a few years ago, dropped anchor in a bay to have a swim - I dived off the side and was having a nice swim about when my DH , still on the boat, starting waving excitedly and pointing and I finally understood that a big turtle was also swimming about. I swam alongside for a while, about 10ft away , enjoying my accidental interaction whilst my DH filmed us.

It suddenly veered towards me, looking rather bigger than I thought and with what suddenly looked like a rather threatening, Platypus eating, expression. I realised I knew absolutely nothing about the behaviour of sea turtles in the wild, so started swimming very fast back to the boat at what my DDs, who were paddling a kayak nearby described as ‘ Warp Factor 2000’ . The crew of the boat were falling about laughing .

The resultant video of my panic is revived at regular intervals of maximum embrassement x

ahtellthee · 12/04/2019 19:06

A swan once attacked me and took my fish and chips supper, to DH's amusement.

Now I steer clear of animals who may bite.

DointItForTheKids · 12/04/2019 19:07

joeblogg a goat at my vest off the washing line once, but I guess that doesn't count Sad...

pinkgloves · 12/04/2019 19:12

My step Aunt recently died from rabies. Horrific way to die.

Fifflefaffle · 12/04/2019 19:14

111 aren't very good at stuff like this. My daughter touched a bat in her bedroom on new years day and I was concerned about rabies. The most anyone offered was finding it weird a bat being in her room and then had to call a tropical expert (who couldn't help because bats aren't tropical!)
So we called the doctor. I know that mountain lions can carry rabies so I would want to check it out, even if it wasn't a mountain lion.
