Bitten by lion - GP?

BittenByLion · 11/04/2019 19:03

Long story short, I’ve just got back from abroad and while I was there I got bitten by a lion. It’s not a serious bite but it did break the skin. The bite was on Monday, it’s healing nicely and there’s no sign of infection but do I need to do anything? Tetanus jab etc.? I gave it a wash at the time but haven’t had any medical attention.

NC’ed cos this is pretty identifying but I’ve been here yonks. Poo on the pouffe, garlic thread worms, pan pipe elf mum, minge etc.

Ok, I’ve spoken to 111. The call handler was... taken aback and a bit Confused but thinks I’ll probably need a tetanus booster and has referred me to the OOH GP. They’ll call me back some time in the next 6 hours. I did apologise for such a silly call!

The lion is fine. It’s at a sanctuary where they rescue the cubs rejected by their mothers and hand-rear them. The grown-ups have nice big bits of veld to run around in with their foster families. It was adorable but TBH I should have stuck with my principles and not given a wild animal a tummy rub. I thought it would be quite controlled and I’d maybe just stand next to it while a keeper took a pic but they had a whole family in there who were posing for pictures with their baby’s head right next to the cubs Confused A bit too much for the cubs IMO but I stroked them so can’t claim any moral high ground here.

I would be concerned qbout rqbies too. Someone I know lost their young child after it was licked by a puppy on holiday.

MarvinMarvinson · 11/04/2019 19:32

I work for 111. They don't distinguish between any animal bites at our service. It's snake, human or animal. Usual advice is miu or A&E for an animal bite that punctures the skin.

Mrsjayy · 11/04/2019 19:34

So did you pay to pet a lion cub ? Or were you volunteering/working there

MarvinMarvinson · 11/04/2019 19:34

Oh good, ooh gp is much more civilised. Nobody wants to be hanging around in A&E unnecessarily. My weirdest bite call was someone who bit their own hand when pissed....

WoollyMollyMonkey · 11/04/2019 19:35

I got bitten by a rat once. A young one, I thought it was a mouse! The cat brought it in and let it go.

stayathomer · 11/04/2019 19:35

*For the love of God. Pleass records the conversation with 111

"Hello 111 your talking to Trudy how may I help you?"

"Hello yes, I've been bitten by a lion. What's your protocol?"*

Just snorted here! Sorry OP and good luck and Flowers

GlitterPixie · 11/04/2019 19:35

I was slapped in the face by a chimp once but a lion bite is way cooler Envy

LynetteScavo · 11/04/2019 19:37

This has to be the biggest stealth boasts has I've read on MN

EerieSilence · 11/04/2019 19:37

A lion is essentially a big cat.
If you want to experience the fun that's being caught by a giant clam, rub its belly.
Btw, when my thumb got hurt by a reusable mouse trap, I went to the GP straightaway for a tetanus injection. If I were bitten by my cat, I'd be going to my GP straight away because there's a danger of a serious infection. With animals abroad, it could also be rabies.

Bodear · 11/04/2019 19:39

Sorry to bring the tone of the thread down but the majority of these lion /tiger sanctuaries are unethical. They need a constant supply of cubs to draw customers which they can’t accommodate as adults but also can’t be released into the wild. The cubs are often bred specifically for the purpose of stocking the sanctuary. Please, if you’re thinking of visiting, do some googling first and make an informed choice not simply believing what the “sanctuary” says in its marketing.

GabsAlot · 11/04/2019 19:42

that lion was cute id definitely phone 111 for advice

BittenByLion · 11/04/2019 19:45

For people concerned about the lion, this is where it lives: www.lionandsafaripark.com If it had been a horrible place with tiny pens or drugged adults I wouldn’t have gone. In any case, I know it’s a bad idea to stroke a lion (or any other wild animal). I won’t be doing it again.

LS I also NC’d cos I knew I’d get a pasting for the lion-stroking. No stealth boasts here! Just laziness over going to any sort of healthcare facility at this time of day after sitting around for hours on a flight.

Surely The most practical solution is to fly to Santa Barbara and get the giraffes to lick the wound?

managedmis · 11/04/2019 19:47

Same prob here

whataboutbob · 11/04/2019 19:49

Maybe ring London zoo? It must happen to the staff sometimes.

Thisisthelaststraw · 11/04/2019 19:50

I read the thread title and thought you must be lion Wink

MitziTheTabbyIsMyOverlord · 11/04/2019 19:51

Was it a cowardly lion?

Lolimax · 11/04/2019 19:52

Student Nurse here. We have a session on A and E skills tomorrow. I shall put my hand up and ask the procedure for dealing with lion bites because I'm not convinced it's an area that has been covered yet.

EjectorCrab · 11/04/2019 19:53

Bitten by a lion, slapped by a chimp, sneezed on by an elephant.
😂

BittenByLion · 11/04/2019 19:54

I was sneezed on by a camel once. It was like having a finely-dropleted shower.

Question for any medics: what’s the point in a rabies/tetanus booster post-injury? You won’t have time to mount an immune response to the vaccine that would give protection. If you already have rabies/tetanus the jab won’t help will it??

Bodear · 11/04/2019 19:57

OP, 2 minutes of googling got me to this: www.iol.co.za/weekend-argus/lion-park-back-to-cub-petting-2061628

The park stopped cub petting experiences for ethical reasons a few years ago but returned for purely financial reasons in 2016.

BittenByLion · 11/04/2019 19:59

Yes I found that this evening too :(
