Bitten by lion - GP?

Long story short, I’ve just got back from abroad and while I was there I got bitten by a lion. It’s not a serious bite but it did break the skin. The bite was on Monday, it’s healing nicely and there’s no sign of infection but do I need to do anything? Tetanus jab etc.? I gave it a wash at the time but haven’t had any medical attention.

NC’ed cos this is pretty identifying but I’ve been here yonks. Poo on the pouffe, garlic thread worms, pan pipe elf mum, minge etc.

I was bitten by a cockatiel once.

DD was pecked on the head by a penguin.

Birds just don't like us.

BittenByLion · 11/04/2019 20:44

I had to google zebu to find out what it was! They look like descendants of the triceratops.

@MrsMigginsLovelyBaps this sounds like tomorrow mornings entertainment 😂

Theninjawhinger · 11/04/2019 20:50

I don’t want to cast aspersions, but aren’t dolphins rapists too? I’ve never liked them, they look so happy but the one that got me was a little bastard. And no one believed me till I showed them the mark because it was so cute!!!

HerewardTheWoke · 11/04/2019 20:50

OP I would seriously advise getting professional advice (ie from an infectious diseases consultant, pref with trop infections expertise) on the rabies vaccine as rabies is one of the worst ways to die imaginable.

If you are in London you can go to the Hospital for Tropical Diseases emergency walk in clinic without a referral. If not your GP can phone them for advice. GPs can phone the main UCLH switchboard and ask to be put through to the on-call tropical medicine registrar.

Moreisnnogedag · 11/04/2019 20:53

Ok I get it. It’s a fun tale to tell everyone back here in the UK but seriously don’t. Dont share the cute little photo of the lion cub chewing on your sweater, dont tell your friends anymore about it. It encourages a horrendous industry.

If you go back to Joburg, the Pilanesberg National Park is nearby and they do guided tours for around R2000 or even better drive yourself around (and for much much less). I’m personally not a fan of the guided tours because I think they rare around the reserve and force out normal visitors but its far far better than partaking in this kind of thing. The Kruger is nearby too (ish).

On a zoological trip to borneo by our university the medic got bitten by a very venomous centipede. Unfortunately, the only one who knew what to do was the medic. Cue airlift.

MayLeaveADentInYourSofa · 11/04/2019 20:54

I have experience of my children being bitten by zoo animals!!! Different zoos in different countries.

One got bitten by a tiger and was told all the big cats were vaccinated against rabies and there should be no concern.

Another bitten by a monkey. This zoo didn't vaccinate but they did regular blood tests to see if their monkeys were carrying rabies and they showed me their paperwork which convinced me that the monkey was rabies free.

Another also got multiple stings after accidentally disturbing some bees while out for a walk and 111 were useless with advice.

(I acknowledge that the bee stings were probably karma for visiting the above zoos.)

I was pecked by a baby raven. It had fallen out of its nest and my uncle was hand-rearing it so it was quite tame and happy to sit on my forearm. Unfortunately I had a mole on my arm that it obviously thought was food and it wouldn't leave it alone. Quite sore. And then it did a poo on me.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/04/2019 20:56

Why don't you email the sanctuary and ask about whether their animals are vaccinated?

EssentialHummus · 11/04/2019 20:57

I went to the same place as a child OP - I have a photo of me cuddling a lion aged 7/8 (we lived in SA). My dad has a photo of himself around that age cuddling the chimp that "performed" with his handler in a Kenyan mall in the 1960s. It's making me suitably sad thinking of these things with my adult understanding of the mechanics of these sorts of practices, and how they have survived for so long.

I expect you are fine but I hope your jabs pass without incident!

Margot33 · 11/04/2019 20:58

Bathe in strong salt water and phone your gp tomo asking for a tetanus shot. I think you 'll be fine.

Moreisnnogedag · 11/04/2019 20:58

And that’ll teach me to not refresh after getting distracted writing my irate reply. Sorry - you’ve taken this in good spirits.

On trips that we then regret, I went to Beijing Zoo whilst pregnant and cried outside the hyena cage. Like a baby. People were very concerned. I had to leave it was so awful and then got lost and cried again. Why I thought it would be a good idea to go to the zoo there I dont know.

MrsMigginsLovelyBaps · 11/04/2019 21:20

@MadSweeney here's the link - you'll never look at them the same again. Rapey little bastards.

EBearhug · 11/04/2019 23:13

Dolphins do drugs, too. They pass round puffer fish. Vicious, rapey, bitey, druggy bastards with great PR.

OP, I hope it is just psychosomatic!

Guyliner · 12/04/2019 08:19

Which is precisely for quite a long while @ebearhug has been one of my favourite posters.

MadSweeney · 12/04/2019 10:35

Dolphins = Sharks with good PR. Brilliant.

Shortandsweet96 · 12/04/2019 13:06

IS this you OP?!

Bitten by lion - GP?
EBearhug · 12/04/2019 14:09

No, dolphins are mammals, sharks are fish. Not the same at all!

(It's this sort of pedantry which means I am not one of everyone's favourite posters! Thank you to Guyliner, though.)

BittenByLion · 12/04/2019 16:41

I can confirm that I am not a man.

OP posts:
Theninjawhinger · 12/04/2019 17:32

How are you feeling today OP? I bet your glad you were just bitten by a lion and not a dolphin now!

Guyliner · 12/04/2019 17:35

I can confirm that I am not a man.
Sexually deviant dolphin then?

Strugglingonagain · 12/04/2019 17:41

How are you feeling OP?

woolduvet · 12/04/2019 17:42

Did you get anywhere with 111

RomanyQueen1 · 12/04/2019 17:57

You weren't poking it then with a "orses ead andle"
Aw, reminds me of Albert and the lion, sorry OP.
